Calling someone a “pantaloon” comes from shakespearean times and refers to someone in what Shakespeare calls “the sixth stage of life” Which is also known as the second childhood, when you become so old that you become helpless, often when things like dementia and Arthritis kick in and you’re having to be cared for as though you’re a child again, and you’re mind becomes “foolish” I think that’s what Tyler is referring to in this song, saying you shouldn’t trust “the foolish old man” But of course, at some point we ourselves also become that foolish old man or woman..
i think this song is about dementia, as the song plays you first get to know his grandfather, whose mind started deteriorating because of dementia, then his father’s, and, despite his attempts to do the opposite, the song finishes with him losing his mind too its just a story and not about his actual experience tho, his grandfather saddly passed away after battling with Alzheimer for many years, tyler wrote a song for him called "legend", highly recommend that one too!
I have to say that it became to the point where your channel is the only reaction channel I even watch these days. I hope your interest in this band stays, because the more you’ll hear, the more interesting and meaningful it becomes
Pantaloon has another meaning - referring to a court jester. I feel like this song is talking about how as we grow old and particularly when dementia kicks in, we are no longer completely sane or respected, but life turns us into a joke and a sideshow for the rest of the world moving on around us.
Another definition, Pantaloon, or Pantalone in Italian, was an old man character in commedia dell'arte. Italian comedy theatre in the 16th-18th centuries.
Also, it’s really just about aging. Old men are crazy as the definition below says. How could they not be when your friends fertilize the ground you walk. Everyone you know starts dying how many deaths are we gonna see in our life knowing that our times coming and we’re supposed to be sane? That sounds like a pretty insane thing to ask of a person if you ask me. Our culture doesn’t address death well at all. We all know it’s coming for us but we’re supposed to pretend that it isn’t go about our lives then when someone snaps because it hits them all at once, we call them crazy. Maybe the old man is wearing the pantaloons which are women’s trousers because they’re comfortable and he just doesn’t care what you think anymore and that makes him crazy but he’s gonna die soon so. OK I rambled a bit there but you get my point I think. I don’t know if that’s right but aren’t Tyler’s song supposed to be interpreted the way that you interpret them?
Totally get it, I was confused my first listen or two on the definition of "pantaloon" Tyler was referring to. Not a favorite of mine but this song has grown on me over time.
If you want to see a much younger Tyler, here is a performance of this song with his original 2 bandmates. WARNING - it starts out really quiet, and when the bass comes in it gets really loud and distorted. ua-cam.com/video/WC0R7n8Kstc/v-deo.htmlsi=lZ-bNq2yaS6FJXeF
Absolutely love your reactions. I love you took the time to look into it before listening .. I think it’s the second meaning of a foolish old man who’s lost his mind. Congrats again on your baby. 💞
Pantaloon noun 1. women's baggy trousers gathered at the ankles. 2. a Venetian character in Italian commedia dell'arte represented as a foolish old man wearing pantaloons. I think it’s definition number two. Also Congratulations kids are the greatest.
This is a hard one but as explained already it refers to growing old & losing your mind to age, how you watch your peers go through it and know one day it will be you. As said Tylers grandfather deteriorated with dementia & he refers to it in songs on Trench. But I also like your theory of becoming the one responsible for family as your father & grandfather have. I guess it all goes hand in hand. Once you get this & listen again the song becomes clearer. Not a fave but at times it’s a total bop
Pantaloon is a fun one to bop to, but it isnt one i go back to a lot. Im loving going through the album with you. For another band to react to you should check out system of a down.
🔥🔥🔥🤟🤟🤟🔥🔥🔥 This is one song that's confusing, to say the least. But it's got a great beat! This is probably the farthest from a banger that they have! Someone probably likes it a lot but...
i think one meaning of pantaloon is a crazy old person - kind of an odd song and honestly one of my least favorites by them - very early on in Tyler's songwriting O-H!
I'll be honest on this one, it's my least favorite song of them. I don't skip it when it comes on but yeah not my fav for sure Well I guess we agree on this one haha 🤙

Tyler said at a show this song was inspired by his grandpa, he had some form of alzheimers.
