First time viewer! Thanks for exactly getting how I approach songs as a basic player. Skipping hard chords, slowly building. Love the reassurance. As I’m sure you’ve told the everyone, it’s all about playing and singing a song. Don’t let lack of skill keep you from enjoying it … and before you know it, the skill will start to build. Just sing louder in the meantime.
Thanks for doing this song. I always loved it. Recently I heard Cat doing it with Chris Cornell and they really had the fills turned up. I went back and listened to the original and also another version from about 15 years ago. Those fills really make the song special.
Thank you for the great tutorial. Always played this campfire, fully strumming, no noodles. Your "How to" is great, comprehensive and at arms reach for intermediate, albeit beginners. Now I can flourish the song with the fills. Again thanks.
I've been working on playing this song for 5 months. It never sounded quite right to me. I obsessed over it many times. Your verse strumming suggestion is genius. Thank you. It sounds beautiful.
Just wanted to say I am learning a great deal and am very comfortable with your teaching and have excelled to a very cool level in my playing and confidence. Thank you for your time sir !
That's so great - thank you Erika - you've got the right approach. Use this video to learn it and the new one to play along with once you know the song. Have fun with it! Shane
Brilliantly done (as is each one of your videos). It's such a delight to watch and learn. Your instruction format and style is probably the best I have seen on UA-cam. Thank you.
When I learned that song many years ago, like you I was taught to use a D7 as the 2nd chord. Recently, I was watching tutorials, and the teachers always used a D chord, and I also saw Cat Stevens himself do the same in a vintage video. It sounds good too, but I still prefer the D7. And I was glad to see you think the same as me. Same thing with the use of the Cmaj7. In another UA-cam tutorial, the teacher use a Dm as the 2nd chord, it doesn't sound good at all. I will not name the guy...
On the issue of a D7 in that recording: With the layering of instruments on multitracks, there were plenty of guitars playing MULTIPLE chord inversions. I am pretty sure a seventh chord was ONE of them. After 4 years of music theory, my last professor drops the ultimate pearl of wisdom. Play what sounds good to YOU. :)
I love to play it many times. I also want you to play another song is "That's why you go away" singing by Michael learn to rock. Added by Patrum and Fingerstyle.
Thank you Jim - sorry for any confusion. Song sheets from older videos are freely downloadable at guitaratwork.ca Just look for the Free Downloads button at the top of the main page. That will take you to a series of folders full of songs. Cheers! Shane
Love this .. very well laid out. I didn’t see the tabs and chords you are mentioning nor a link? Maybe missing something. However I am pretty sure there is a 3rd .. also during the chorus ..between the 2 passes .. after the C .. there is a bass type run on low E and A .. 3rd on E and open A or something?? Cheers
The Bob Ross of guitar teaching. Worth watching even if you don't intend to learn to play. Just relax and enjoy the soothing sounds.
Thank you lane99 - really appreciate that!

👍👍👍
Desperately looking for a lesson on “99 Miles from LA” by Johnny Mathis. Too tough for me to work out!
I really struggle to play a F chord. I play it like the c chord.
Are you Canadian? I hear the accent when you say “out”.
Canuck all the way my friend! But….it’s actually YOU who has the accent. We still speak The Queen’s English up here.
You'd be a good radio voice.
Thanks for the video. One question: why did you leave out the other fill?
Thanks Jacob - you're right - there is another fill - maybe I will update the video at some point - cheers!
Shane
@@GuitarAtWork Please do!!
