Don't worry...everyone is confused by the opening of Rebellion on the first watch. Anyone who isn't is lying...
22:00 Remember that if Homu stops time while touching someone, they also aren't stopped. Mami had a ribbon attached to Homu's ankle, and so Mami is technically touching Homu.
24:10 Basically Sayaka said something that shouldn't be true in this timeline: homura being a transfer student. The only way Sayaka would know that is if she somehow also aware that this isn't the true timeline. She also flashed Oktavia, her other half, in her shadow. Basically the Sayaka in this movie is the one from the end of the main series. She's both the magical girl and the witch version of herself at the same time.
26:56 Sayaka is *A* witch, but not the one responsible. Homu is the witch keeping everyone trapped and she just realized it.
27:30 It's confirmation that this takes place after the end of the series. Remember when Homu leaked the whole "madoka was a person" thing to a kyubey, well they were like "sounds fake. Let's test it" and when Homura eventually was going to go witch (and, thus, get saved by madoka) the inkyubators basically put her soul gem in stasis. Without Madoka being able to save it, it developed as it should have, becoming a witch...but since the soul gem is contained the witch borne from it never left its soul gem.
29:40 It's an old record player. Homura's constant rewinding is like a broken record that keep skipping. Her familiars pull her towards her inevitable doom, while the ribbon on her dress constantly struggles to keep her from it and causes destruction as she resists. She's shackled because he's a prisoner of this process. Before it's sliced off, she's also wearing a witch hat.
30:50 I like HOW sayaka activates her witch powers. She stabs her own heart out. Remember, the reason she became a witch was a broken heart, so the way to access her powers as a witch is to tear her own heart out.
36:00 Poor kyubey is only thinking one thing, I bet: "oh god, oh man...OH GOD, OH MAN.... *OH GOD, OH MAN!"*
38:08 Ah, Homura's got those sanpaku eyes. That's visual shorthand for "This person is NOT DOING OKAY ON THE INSIDE"
38:51 I wish you had shown it on-screen, but Homura's face when she said those words. Those same word's she's kept saying to Madoka over and over, which she thought she would never have to say again. The face Homura had then was her realizing that, even with her stolen godhood, even after all this time, EVEN NOW, WITH THE WORLD IN HER HAND, she is still stuck in the exact same loop as when she started. *The record skips, and and begins to play a tragically familiar tune*
I honestly can't wait for the next movie that's supposed to come out this year. I don't know WHAT they're planning, but if Urobutcher is still in charge it's going to be brutal.

One thing a lot of people seem to miss on their first watch is that Homura didn't just threaten to shoot herself, or graze the side of her head. She 100% blasted her own brains out.
She knows this wont kill her because she knows her soul is in her soul gem, not in her body. Like Kyubey said, so long as your soul gem is safe and you have enough magic to spare, you can survive basically anything.
Homura knows this. Mami does not.

    • @hourglassrose5513
      @hourglassrose5513 2 місяці тому +322

Even better, I think, is that Homura only had a theory, and so the hesitation she had (as well as her expression) is because she was testing her theory *fatally* and wasn't 100% sure she would make it.
It just shows how absolutly desperate she is at that point.

the ending is a lot more complicated than just “homura became obsessed with madoka”
    1) the incubators were going to use madoka and her powers in order to bring back the witch system. not only does homura know that, but she also feels completely responsible bc she’s the one who told kyuubey abt madoka
    2) homura realized that madoka wasn’t happy as a goddess (hence the metaphorical scars on her arms) because she was separated from the people she loved (she says this in the flower scene, and shinbo, one of pmmm’s creators, stated that these are madoka’s true feelings)
    3) homura, despite what she’s done and how she seems, wants everyone to be happy: she’s brought sayaka and bebe back to life and has re-written reality so they can what they want again (kyoko and sayaka are implied to be living together, as are bebe and mami, and madoka is living with her family again)
    4) homura calls herself “satan” because of her christian upbringing (in episode 1, she says that she’s from a christian school in tokyo), because she literally “defied/betrayed” god by ripping her out of the sky. in her eyes, an act like that makes her evil, because to homura, protecting madoka and ensuring that her (and by extension, the rest of the girls that she cares about) can have a happy life, and being able to torture the incubators forever is more important to her than madoka’s wish

Cake song thingy is what Homura actually dreamed of deep in her heart as a magical girl. In her own world, enemies are just cute and goofy dolls that fire pillows. The magical girls don't have to fight for their lives here, just have a little tea party to soothe their enemies and put them into a peaceful slumber. And everyone gets plentiful reward after, not like the real world where witches or wraiths in.
These childish yet peaceful things are just like most teenage girls generally hope for, and are the reason why other girls did not doubt the world she created, and also why Homura doubted the world she found herself in.

The way that Madoka and Homura become eternally opposed ( Godoka and Devil Homura) just summarizes the way that Madoka and Homura’s perception on reality has always been conflicting despite caring for each other. Madoka is willing to accept her own tragedy for the sake of humanity but Homura has always strived to achieve some better ending. Madoka will always make the best of a horrible situation - even at the expense of her own life to save others - whereas Homura’s will always be searching for the reality that adheres best to her own wants and need for comfort that she’s now grown to obsessively associate with Madoka’s closeness to her.

One thing I'll point out is that a lot of people got confused about homura calling herself evil and the devil. What she really means is she's 'evil' as in the sense that she's opposing gods will (madoka), and the same apploes to why she calls herself a devil. She's not literally the devil, and she's not straight up evil. Its easy to miss and is actually a big reason a lot of the films haters claim this is a character assassination for homura.

Something most people don't catch the first time through is why the Homura shooting herself in the head gambit works. Since Magical Girls exist in their soul gems and their bodies are external hardware, they can tank a headshot. But Mami wouldn't remember that fact, hence the fakeout.

    • @reggie1025
      @reggie1025 2 місяці тому +39

Even if she did remember, watching your friend blow their brains out isn’t something someone like Miami would just let happen whether Homura could tank it or not. Homura was probably like, 99% sure Mami would move to stop it regardless.

    • @Crescendobro
      @Crescendobro 2 дні тому

@@reggie1025 The reason for the fakeout is because Mami can make her ribbons intangible since her ribbons symbolize her ability to bond people and things together, the reason we don't see the ribbon for most of the fight is because Mami had the ribbon on ghost mode, which allowed her to dodge Homura's time stops since they were technically joined but Homura couldn't do anything about the ribbon. Homura knew that in a straight up 1v1 she'd lose to Mami because she always does, unless she can freeze Mami in time and stop her when Mami can't fight back.
Homura shot herself so that Mami would make the ribbon solid and since it was solid Homura could then cut the ribbon and her time stop would affect Mami again. Homura knew about how her body wouldn't die from that either due to her experiences from the past timeline however I don't think she trained like Sayaka did to suppress her ability to feel pain so it likely hurt a fair bit when she did it.
Danny didn't show it but in the full clip of this fight there's a scene where we see smoke cover the screen briefly and the smoke shows one of Mami's trademark flowers which is where most fans assume Mami swapped herself out with the ribbon puppet that later exploded and ensnared Homura

not necessarily, getting her head bit off would likely have caused Mami to despair A LOT which is more likely to have her go full Witch instead of heal it and be normal after. Plus the anime tells us the more magic the girls use the faster their soul gems darken and they become Witches meaning even if she didn't become a Witch from the despair of having her head chomped it's likely the amount of magic needed to regrow her head would cause her gem to blacken and her to become a Witch anyway, especially since Mami's personal magic wasn't healing/regeneration like Sayaka's is

i love this movie bc it brings to light the fact that homura's wish which was to save madoka never really came true, the anime finale kinda makes you forget about that, but it doesn't matter if the world hasn't ended or that magical girls stopped becoming witches, she still failed at the one thing she rewinded all those timelines for.

From the wiki, this is her wish:
“I wish... I can meet Ms. Kaname all over again. But this time, instead of her protecting me, I want to be strong enough to protect her!”
So she definitely couldn't protect Madoka (from becoming a Puella Magi and the Law of Cycles), but the wish itself is to become strong in the past, saving her is a consequence of that.
On the other hand, wishes are usually granted in spirit rather than letter, so you're right there.

My favourite part was the after credits scene (that I suspect you missed) where the moon is literally cut in half (really great symbolism) and Kyubey is severely beaten up, and there is a flicker in his eyes that was never there throughout the whole series. Then she T poses on a chair and falls off the cliff.
I suspect that one of Homura's punishments on kyubey is that he was forced to feel emotions, (because his eyes are no longer dead looking/emotionless) and/or is the metaphorical grief seed, holding on to (and feeling) all the despair collected from the wraiths that Magical girls have to fight. A fitting one considering what he did.

Some fun details: in the last conversation with Sayaka, Homura was being used for rotten tomatoes target practice by the Clara Dolls (scary smiling kids from her labyrinth); as if showing that she is a "bad actor" right now, can't pretend very well.
When Mami is walking by her table Homura throws off a teacup from it, and tea was often associated with Mami in the series.
When Kyouko feeds the oddbirds and throws an apple down to Clara Dolls, Homura shakes her head so that they will let it fall. Kyouko shows that she is friendly with someone by giving them food.
And then there's Madoka and Homura saying to her that they might become enemies one day.
Meanwhile Nagisa just enjoys herself! No confrontation, only cheese (and Mami)!
Also Madoka's answer on the field is the reason Homura did what she did.

Starts off with madoka but it's just not quite right, it looks like her but the details are off
Shows a POV of Homura watching Madoka transform, but again it doesn't look quite right
Has the film reel effect that is used in Homuras' transformation (showing its somehow affected by homura)
Then shows FUCKING MADAKAMIS' HAND BREAKING INTO THE LABIRYNTH AND POSSESSING THE FAKE MADOKA
Istg its the best foreshadowing and no one noticed

My theory as to why Homura could take the entire universe is because her wish was to save Madoka. It's like how Madoka's wish had the consequence of making her a god because that's the only way for her wish to come true, the same goes for Homura's wish. In order to save Madoka she had to turn into the god of the multiverse and steal a fraction of her powers. Madoka and Homura's wishes contradict each other thus trapping Homura in yet another loop where she can't completely save Madoka.

    "Movie was released in 2016"
Oh it's even worse than that. Rebellion was released in 2013, meaning by the time movie 4 releases, us long-time fans will have lived with Rebellion as an ending for 11 years.
I saw it in theaters when it came to North America, which was sick af, the most memorable cinema experience I've ever had. After the movie ended, the entire theater was SILENT, and we remained silent as we shambled out of the room with all our brains melted. Not only that, but we didn't have the opportunity to re-watch it immediately after since there was no streaming service offering it or blu-ray release. So for a time, a lot of the fandom was reeling with the wild takes of first-time viewers of this halfway-understood movie. Now it seems to be the consensus that you need about 3 viewings of Rebellion to truly take it all in lol.
I remember feeling shattered by this movie's ending for a long time. It legitimately hurt to see Homura's character progress like this. It took a while for me to warm up to it, but I did eventually! Now I adore it for its thematic and visual density, and for the potential this ending brings to the series. It's fascinating, and ultimately makes me love Madoka Magica even more.
Thanks for sharing your reaction with us. Re-experiencing PMMM never gets old, but this was probably the most entertaining reaction I've seen. Great insight, great jokes, overall had a great time! :D

11:42 Since everything in a Witch's labyrinth is a reflection of a girl's mind, somewhere in Homura's subconscious there is a food song _and_ a magical system where everything is fun and silly and no one dies. Also the zeppelins and a mix of Nutcracker the book and the ballet~

During Madoka's magical girl transformation, the whole time, she just doesn't fit into frame, being too big, too small, too far to the left or right. She's also the only one who's hands and eyes don't watch the colors they are and she's the only one who's body isn't a full color. This whole time, it turns out that this is Homura's fake version of Madoka but right after seeing this fake version of Madoka, you see a hand breaking glass. This is when Homura trapped literal God Madoka into her labyrinth, completing the true Madoka and also trapping Charlotte (The magical girl who was Bebe) and Sayaka as well
This is also why the intro is so confusing, it's all Homura's labyrinth, her brain creating a fake world where she's happily fighting fake witches (Nightmares) with her friends as her subconscious mourns Madoka's death from everyone's memory from the universe
Also Homura turned into a witch at the very end of the anime. Those black wing looking things? That's her turning into a witch lol
Also the reason why Madoka keeps saying she'd never leave or sacrifice herself to save everyone even though she already did was because she's only saying what Homura wants her to say. This is her labyrinth after all, she's tricking and gaslighting herself to believing that Madoka would be much happier and better off if she'd never left
Also at the very end of the show, when Madoka has her yellow ribbons, those yellow ribbons represented her God form. By Homura literally taking those yellow ribbons out of her hair and replacing them with her red ones, symbolizes Homura literally suppressing and taking away Madoka's Godhood

  • @lorettabes4553

25:49 Oof, that realisation in this scene that makes Homura go full demon is so... so... heartbreaking.
Her realising Madoka is not happy, that the self sacriface was for others and not herself, makes Homura just tip over. And she decides to bring Madoka back.
39:40 I mean, I've watched the show and movie so, so many times. I've become desebsitized to the confusion of the movie. And having mulled over the writing of the anime, both the show and movie are steeped into the 'grandness'. The symbolism is everywhere, in every line, shot and scene. The movie focuses more on it, because where else was there to go?
I'm hyped for the next movie.

The movie is the logical conclusion to Homura's character and arc. Every other character reached some sort of conclusion and closure at the end of the anime (Madoka ascending to godhod and martyrdom, Sayaka accepting her loss and moving on peacefully into the afterlife, Kyoko and Mami seem like the exception but it is canon that they used to be very close and it could be very likely that they have started to reconnect). All except Homura. This is where rebellion sets in and lets her accomplish her true goal: Save Madoka. Her act of usurping Madoka as a goddess is both ultimately selfish and selfless. She gave up everything and is willing to become someone who might be madokas enemy ultimately, even one day willing to die at her hands if it means she can live the life she deserves.
Not to mention the entire movie is just the struggle of Homura's inner feelings. Blindly believing in a world where she and Madoka can be happy and her self hatred telling her she does not deserve to be happy and wanting to uncover the truth.

It seems confusing at first, but after a few watches everything comes together beautifully. I think it’s funny that this seems to have been purposeful considering how the movie is written. I wonder if the directors wanted the audience to feel almost like Homura used to. Rewinding time again and again and slowly collecting more information about the situation, but in the end there’s nothing you or her could do to change things.

So just for the record, Homura did shoot herself in the head but remember magical girls can't die unless you destroy their soul gem. Homura's is on the back of her hand, Mami should've realized this, but I think the whole situation threw her off. You also see it where Homura has to force her arm down to shoot the frozen Mami in the leg because her soul gem is in her hairpiece.
Also it should be noted that Homura is technically still a witch since Godoka never cleansed her soul gem. The scene with the galaxy it being overlaid by what looks like hershield, is Homura literally overlaying reality with her labyrinth. Thats also her witch familiars are still around.

So glad you liked the visuals, I am a firm believer that even if you have no fucking clue what’s happening in the movies everything still looks sick as fuck and I’m glad to see that it applies here

"Am I being pranked?" - basically yes.
I relate all too much with the statement that you had to pause the movie to look up if you were missing something. And I definitely get where you're coming from with the "it gets lost in itself" comment. I've had years since watching it to pull the puzzle pieces together in my head, but first watchthrough, I absolutely felt that same sense of confusion - and I think a lot of others did, too.
Don't know if you'll react to the Magia Record side show - would love it if you do, but it's definitely not "required reading" or anything, so if not, I understand.

i really like rebellion bc of how homura just started going a bit crazy after so many years of repeating the timelines for madoka and became overly obsessed for just being with madoka to the point where she destroyed another universe and all madoka made js to be with her which is kinda sad bc it’s really toxic but it shows just how much homura was willing and did for madoka’s love. anyways great movie and as always great video so ‼️‼️

Doesn't it make sense that Homura was the witch?... You look at the first hour of the movie, isn't it full to the brim with stuff that Homura would like to have seen and experienced, but never did?... Every time I rewatch this movie, I'm in awe at how appropriate to Homura everything is in that labyrinth.

I’m so glad you liked this movie, every single detail of Madoka Magica is so thought out. I’m so glad it’s receiving the praise it deserves. Walpurgisnacht, is a new movie meant to follow up Rebellion coming out possibly this year! It looks amazing you should check it out, even if it’s in your own time

I can say for sure that this anime is something one would want to watch in its entirety again twice to fully comprehend everything that went down, and to notice new details and foreshadowings. This is my favorite anime of all time and I have watched it so many times. At the end of the video, you said that the anime is better than the movie but in my opinion it's the opposite. The complete and gradual unraveling of the true plot as the movie tries to gaslight you into thinking you are watching the wrong thing is genius. You will come to realize the explanations of all you were confused about if you decide to watch the movie a second time. Thank you so much for reacting to the Rebellion movie. I had a lot of laughs and yelled a lot with you. It truly brightened my day! :D
Also somewhere in this video you basically described the plot of the side story anime. It's definitely not as good as the main story but its alright! I enjoyed it at least, you get to experience new characters and some of the main story characters appear at some point.

Me shaking your shoulders and foaming at the mouth: homura being a witch/the devil was actually foreshadowed at the end of the anime when she dropped down to fight the wraiths and while she walking towards them. She first get angelic angel wings that manifest out then while she’s walking out the wings get all spidery and cosmic in the way witch’s labyrinths spread out. Kyubey was also on her shoulder at that time which could have foreshadowed her being trapped by them to confirm the law of cycles homura mentioned to gloopy before she dropped down to fight.
I am very ab this anime 🙂

Just pausing real quick to say a quick thank you once again. Dude you have such a stellar reaction style. You make rapidfire jokes - and good ones, at that. But you absorb the story and symbolism and pay attention to what's being shown, and then provide deep, thoughtful and honest thoughts as well. I just really like knowing that a content creator can give honest, profound reviews of media, but also just give us all a smile when they upload. It's a truly magical combination.

My favorite part about this movie is that ending scene with Homura and Madoka and the ribbons.
This is a very obvious and popular understanding of this scene but it just speaks to me.
Homura in that scene takes away Madoka’s golden ribbons, and gives Homura the red ones.
She takes away her divinity, (because MadoKami (Kami means god) has golden eyes) and gives her back her regular self, because Madoka is mainly seen wearing the red ones.

23:02 So it’s not noticeable most of the time, but Mami’s soulgem is on her hat. When she got her head bitten off, her soulgem was shattered in the process. That’s why she died so easily. If you also noticed, when Mami shot Kiyoko’ gem in that one timeline, she detransformed when she died. Mami also detransformed when she died. So she may have had this power, but she was already dead as soon as her head was bitten, because her soulgem got shattered too.

'Why doesn't Homura just stop time? Why is she fighting Mami like that?' Ah, but notice that Mami's ribbons -- the spider web you mentioned -- touch Homura. As we know, if you touch Homura, you don't freeze when Homura uses her time manipulation power. By making sure there always is physical contact (albeit indirect, via ribbons) between her and Homura, Mami neutralizes this power and forces Homura to fight a conventional battle. Smart little blondie, isn't she? 🙂

The "harnessing your witches power" concept reminds me a ton of a concept in Magia Record! Magia Record is originally a mobile game, but they made it into a spin-off show as well. It's 3 seasons long (season 3 only being the 4 final episodes) with a total of 25 episodes. I have heard playing the game is better than watching the show, but I don't know enough about the game to judge for myself. I personally really enjoyed Magia Record and I'd recommend it if you want more Madoka Magica content.
