The creator has said the pilot is no longer canon but there are some aspects that do carry through to the rest of the show.
Which is stupid because everything in the pilot still stands true except some of the character's personalities.

Stolas’ personality didn’t really change. He acted the same in the pilot and the first episode, but over time he grew to have feelings for Blitzo
Millie no longer has a white spot in her hair, Loona no longer has syphilis, Stolas is no longer a villain. The only things from the pilot that stayed true in the show are the doctors existing and the "Sorry, I fuc*ed your husband" part.
Bliztø stealing the book was the most crucial information in the pilot. That’s what those people begging for this wanted you to see. I just wanted to see another helluva boss reaction lmao
Edit: as a lot of people have mentioned, it’s also explicitly shown in Season 2 ep 1. There’s the episode to look forward to ig? (They’re all so good tho…)

@@Panboy2kI watched the pilot first and to me just having the context of who the characters were to each other did help me understand the show, even if almost all of it is explained in one way or another later. Plus, the one thing you don’t get in the full series is the theme song! It’s so catchy!! And it tells you what I.M.P. stands for!!

@@whitenobeard it forgets its identity, its gets super predictable, its loses all its hot sauce, it forgets its own continuity, characters are super stagnant, it doesnt have a fucking plot anymore, like it goes off the rails in the worse way, and the antagonist take the biggest dive, and most HUGE issues get resolves in one ep and everyone gets over everything so the show loses all the stakes built up in season one
and more importantly is ten times less funny than season on despite being a fucking comedy

Pilot episodes are actually not episode one, Pilot doesn't mean first episode.
It's basically a test or pitch for the show. So this pilot is not the first episode it's to see if the concept has an audience, which it clearly did.
Other shows will also air the pilot as the first episode much of the time. This show made a number of changes between the pilot and first episode, so they're still distinct.

@@luckydaleoxolotl102 I think it depends on the show. Some shows treat the pilot at episode 1 after more episodes are greenlit, and some don't. For example, Castle's first episode is the pilot. You can even tell by the time that has passed with hair length. But like Owl House's pilot is not canon.
Live shows seem to more likely keep their pilots as the first episode, were animated shows might not due to style and story change.

Also the storyboard of Oh Millie is actually fully animated and was released separately from the first episode. It was more like a sneak peak to get people exited for what’s to come
I'm dying, I know his "that is not Stolas" is referring to the voice actor change, but it's just generally very apt because pilot Stolas has the biggest veer in characterization to the main show. Stolas really did go from "I'm calling 911 please save me from this creepy bird" to the best boy pfft. (honestly that change is half the reason I think it's actually fun to have someone watch the pilot first. It gives such whiplash.)
Best improvement of casting ever, I heard he's a big reason to why stolas had the big character change to begin with, and initially he was more of a villain type? And now we absolutely love our emotionally complex loving father freaky bird boy with an AMAZING voice

Eh, I kind of miss Stolas being a little evil. I liked the idea that his initial arrangement with Blitz was more "You have two things you can do unless you want me to burn your company to the ground for stealing my book: You can take out some human targets I'll give you every once in a while, or you can come over to my place and smash me once in a while." It would kind of build a really interesting, unhealthy dynamic to me where Blitz would need to face himself and his past relationships with people like Fizz and Verosika and how/if they impact why he keeps agreeing to Stolas' demands even if he hates feeling like a plaything, while Stolas would be forced to realize that he's never treated anyone besides maybe his own daughter like a person with feelings to consider. It would have then added something more to his relationship with Stella, because yes, she's always screamed for attention and regard, but would he have noticed if she didn't make herself impossible to ignore? IDK, I just like the concept behind pilot Stolas too much, I think.

@alphakowaclips originally the pilot was cannon. At some point things changed but small bits of the lore carried through, which is why it took till later episodes to fully cover it with the pilot being non-canonical
The reason the pilot isn't cannon is because most of it is not the direction they wanted to go, they did keep some, but the worst parts of the story, like Stolas's behavior, Loona's syphilis, and Moxxie's behavior towards Millie, but that ends up being a low key trauma issue
Wait, I thought Loona actually did have Sypilis since Blizo has to take her to a vet appointment for it and can't give up the appointment because it takes months.

Viv officially took the pilot out of the helluva boss shoe Playlist because it is not cannon, she didn't want the show to seem like it killed kids a lot, and she didn't like the mini stories in the pilot as it was more meant for a baseline introduction of the characters and she didn't want Loona to seem like she sleeps around since the word is she may be Asexual

So the pilot is considered loose canon at most. It's no longer canon but a lot of the stuff is still holds up and explains some of the lore. So take everything with a grain of salt but most of it more or less still works.
The really chill music in the background at the beginning as he absolutly loses his shit is just the best thing.

ACTUALLY! The Moxxie song to Millie at the end is actually animated. It is it's own video: "Oh Millie (official music video)" and it's very pretty and cute. Definitely check it out for the music tier list at the end of all this. xD
Also I laughed so hard I started coughing from the the whole spiders gift thing, it shouldn't even have been that funny, but you're just so peak dude.
They actually did fully animate the song at the end. They uploaded it as a separate video after it was finished.
It gives context that the Cherubs made their own commercial and ripped off I.M.P.s jingle. Which adds to Blitzø being pissed and shooting the tv.
It also sets the context that Luna is Blitzøs adopted daughter and why Stolas was hitting up his phone in Episode 1.
Also millie's voice actor is different in this one. She gets a new voice actor in the series and her country accent comes through more.

I think the pilot was mostly just exploring the dynamics and ideas of the storyline and characters and so on. I think it's clear that the writers hadn't polished the character arcs yet, and actors weren't completely settled in their roles either.

I need to fact check this, but I've heard that Viv herself said somewhat recently that the pilot technically isn't canon, even going as far as removing it from the show playlist. It's still a great watch, and I myself would probably still tell people to start with the pilot, but I don't blame you at all for missing it.

There are a few things that carry over. This is where Blitz gets the idea for the billboard we see in episode one. This is where we see that Blitz initially stole the book and that he's responsible for Stella knowing that Stolas was cheating on her. And this is where we see the start of Luna gaslighting Moxxie about being fat.

Technically the pilot episode isn't always the first episode. Sometimes it's just the episode to get the show going. Takes Avatar for example. The pilot is just a random adventure that nobody saw for years.
Don't forget when pilots are lost media that were never shown to the public, like MGPAM.
I ended up realizing there was a pilot about the same number of episodes in, and I agree that I don’t think it’s the best episode to start with. It fits more like a bonus episode and pretty much everything brought up in the pilot is elaborated on later in the show within a better context.

The pilot isn't actually cannon, thats why it's not 'episode 1', but it is helpful for context and to introduce the characters/premise. Most people skip the pilot and are fine, its just a funny addition.

@kaelalist9656 I think about this one particular live action skit every time I pour a liquid into a container. There was this one episode about babysitting and the person was trying to find a bottle. And then there were all these different cups and stuff to talk about volume and how the volume never changed, just the shape.
I also think about this one where they showed why you shouldn't play carnival games because they are rigged. Actually had that running through my head during LooLooLand so much 🤣 I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers the live action 🤣

I've always thought of this not as the first episode, but more like the "Production Pilot" that you would show to a producer to try and get them to fund the show and air it somewhere.
