  • Today I am going to show you how I chose to build my floating dock. I built this on my private pond for the purposes of fishing and helping out with pond maintenance.

Nice Wharf boat. Keep in mind with the trolling motor it is likely to get clogged up with sea weed & Lilly pads . So make it so you can remove the motor easily and maybe take the motor home for safe storage too. .

Real nice job. Been looking at a way to do work on my pond from the water rather than the edge without swimming. You showed me

Seal the barrels in cold weather to prevent collapse with warm weather. I did not fasten my barrels as I never take it out. WI DNR ticketed me for having a trolling motor on our raft. But we are going to trial.

I thought anything under 5 hp was allowed without registration?

5 years ago I built a 8' plywood boat out of 1/4" sheet for my grandkids. Within 30 minutes of the kids in the water the Alabama Marine Police in Orange Beach, AL wrote me a $185.00 marine violation for an un-registered power craft (had a trolling motor for power) being used in open state waters. Then to top it off another $250.00 for allowing unlicensed and under age children to operate the vessel. Thank goodness they had their life jackets on and all needed safety equipment required by law. If not I would most probably have ended up under the jail.

Do you take it out in the winter?

    • @midsouthoutdoors7321

No. It is too heavy to move out with out disassembling it. Winter doesn't hurt it. The pond froze completely over this winter and it was fine. Might be a good idea to take the motor in for the season.

What is the shaft length on that trolling motor?

I think it's a 42". It was the longest one I could find from Minn Kota

How big is the dock and why 6 barrels

I built this dock 10' x 10'. The barrels were only $5 each from some guy on MarketPlace. So, I figured, why not. The more barrels, the more weight it will hold. It will absolutely work with 4 barrels if you are not planning to put much weight on it. If I built it again, I would have made it a barrel length longer and used 8 barrels. I think it would be more stable to be a bit longer. It is fine when I am on it by myself but I had 3 people on it the other day and we really had to stay spread out.
