I can picture it now. A snowy night in the cabin. Dale and Angel in front of a cosy fire. The smell of coffee and fresh scones baked on the wood stove ...generously slathered in butter and crab apple jelly. Good times. :)
Dale, your jelly is a lovely colour, my mouth is watering! Next time you make some try adding a few branches of rosemary to your apples when boiling...no need to pick the needles as they will strain out in the jelly bag...it gives the apple jelly a wonderfully fragrant flavour and the jelly is simply amazing with roast lamb or chicken (if you eat meat) or with cheeses...Di xx
hi dale ,dave from Orillia Ontario ,always wait for your new videos and am never disappointed thanks for the great job on the jelly . always the best to you and yours.
Goodness Dale, this looks wonderful. I'll give this a try. The rooster crowing reminds me of the mornings, during breakfast, growing up. Lovely to hear.
Two years ago a friend bought the wrong apple tree, it was a crab apple they did not want it so I planted it. No apples this year but cant wait I grew up on crab apple jelly I love it. Thank you now I know how to make.
Definitely one of the easiest jellies to make. I hope the tree is a true crab apple and not one of the ornamental varieties that have been bred to only produce a berry size apple.
StarlessNight lol! I listen to Dale litterally every night to help me fall asleep as his voice is so relaxing to me. ive been doing this for ten months now....i have really bad insomnia and have been on ambian for years and besides that medication the only thing that has ever really helped me shut off my anxious brain is Dales voice! I put my ipad next to my pillow ......works like a charm!
I'm trying to talk my brother-in-law into planting a full size Crab Apple tree or two on the farm. Fast growing. Those apples you have are beauties! This is another recipe where I substitute honey. Always had neighbors with lots of honey :-) There used to be a product that I bought from Walnut Acres ( not in business anymore?) for a pectin product that did not require sugar. Will have to research that again. Beautiful jelly Dale.
My grandma made spiced crab apples when I was a kid. They were whole with stems left on she put them in a jar with yummy spices and she canned them. We got to have one in a bowl with a scoop of ice cream. Delish. Your jelly looks great.
I haven't eaten crab apple jelly for a long time. I love it though. We used to serve it with meats or cheese - more like a chutney than a jam on toast. Enjoy your videos. Thank you.
Have a lovely big ornamental crab apple tree in full bloom in the front yard at the moment. Never lamented the lack off fruit until now. The jelly looked lovely and such a pretty colour. Bit jealous about the latte too :) Have a great week.
Thank you Karilyn the ornamental trees are very popular here too. I planted two new old varieties crab apples this spring and one didn't make but the nursery is replacing it next spring.
Thanks Bob most of the ornamental garden variety crab trees have been bred to produce a tiny berry like apple because people don't want the apples just the spring flowers. These are from a true crab apple tree likely white flowers in the spring.
Lovely color and texture, glad it turned out well. I've not made jelly, only jam, but might have to try now. Just that one extra step to strain out the pulp. Thanks for sharing!
For some strange reason, every time I watch one of your videos, I get hungry! Looked great Dale, think my sister has a crab apple tree, have to try this.
Amazing color, When I was a kid we always reused the lids and rings, If the lid was not damaged it was reused, The only thing that can happen is it don't seal, If that happens it goes in the fridge. But I see on youtube everyone seems to always use now ones.
I always did the same thing until a few years ago and several stories of botulism from home canning. Evidently the seal can fail in storage. More serious in canned vegetables than jam or jelly but to be safe now I always used new lids.
Crab apple jelly is one of my favourites, because it is so easy to make. We used to make a lot, but haven't recently because we lost our crab apple tree. Yours looked really good, and had a great colour, I remember ours being a little lighter, but that might just be my memory lol. Thanks for sharing Dale.
Looks yummy Dale! Thanks for sharing. I've never tried crabapple jelly but my grandma always made crabapple pickles when I was little. So amazing! A sweet pickle with cinnamon and cloves. If you ever get your hands on more crabapples I highly recommend.
Thank you I planted two new crab apple trees this spring and one died and is being replaced next spring by the nursery where I bought them. It will be a few years before they have apples but that is one thing I want to try. The ones in this video would be far too sour for pickled apples.
Dale, I add a couples handfuls of sour cherries to my crab apple jelly for colour. And, two or three cups of sour cherries (again for colour) when I make Rhubarb wine. I’ve never tried but I’m sure Nanking cherries or a beet would do the same … ?
Thank you Andy. They sell this cheap one in a kit here along with a few other useful items for canning. I had a very nice glass one that was my mothers until I dropped it on the ceramic floor LOL.
Dale, Have you ever tried making apple jelly flavored with roses? It's quite lovely with a subtle taste of rose. I have a great old recipe. You could use the petals from your huge rose bush in front of your house!
I'm sitting here enjoying a coffee and a leftover homemade biscuit that's been heavily buttered and pan fried,ok ok I'm getting up now to at least get some kinda fruit preserve, thank you Dale, lol have a great day
Wish I had access to crab apples...I like you cooking videos. I made the refrig. dill pickles you made...delicious. I will be making the hokkaido squash soup soon. Harvested 3 beautiful squash from 1 plant. It had 5 but two were partially eaten on by some rodent...long teeth marks. Thanks for the seeds!!
Hey Dale, I had no idea there was even such a thing as crab apple jelly. Not sure what planet I've been on! Lee Valley, wonder if that's the same company I bought some woodworking tools from. If it is, they are a really great company for fine tools. I will be digging up your hokkaido soup soon, can't wait. Your jelly came out really great, haha hear little footsteps or toe nails of a puppy in your video! Hope she is doing well.
Yes that is the same Lee Valley and I agree a great company that always give good service. I tend to but kitchen items and garden items from them and christmas gifts. I hear those clicking nails all day she follows me everywhere. She is doing very well thank you.
I wish I had figs enough to do that. Boughten fig preserve is always so expensive. A few years ago I worked on a small farm in Tuscany and they had a large fig tree and a large walnut tree. The lady made a fig and walnut jam that was to die for.
Lovely jelly Dale! Made some when I was young and living on the farm, but it wasn't that vibrant red color, would you happen to know what variety of crab apple tree that was?
A few years ago a friend had a small gift shop with a lot of imported artifacts from third world countries and I bought a number of things there the set on the table is a cream & Sugar and a salt & pepper set with little spoons, with frogs on each of the pieces. Just a decoration so far I have never used it. Made in Indonesia.
Hi Dale, doing catch up on posted vids. You have done a few interesting ones lately, You mentioned you did not make the bread which raises the question " Do you bake bread?" Cheers Mike B
Thank you Mike. I don't do it very often now but one of my favourite things to bake is the no knead bread it makes a great loaf almost as good as you can get at an artisanal bakery. There are a couple of videos on it back there somewhere.
Thank you for the quick response Dale. I love making bread and find kneading therapeutic. There is a working Medieval water mill not far from our village where you can buy stone ground flour. Thanks again Mike B
I'm watching your video right now and doing it myself. I planted a small crabapple tree in the front of my house in our new place and I decided I would pick them they were beautifully red and very few even had issues with them. I just trimmed off the ends and took out the branch and threw them in a pot wash them off with warm water. Then I put boiling water to the top of the apples and started boiling them and followed your instructions. The apples fell apart sifted it the juice came out of it beautiful. So far we added the right amount of sugar, right now we're ready to let the beautiful juice sit for a half an hour and boil. I just would like to know what to do with the pulp.
I can picture it now. A snowy night in the cabin. Dale and Angel in front of a cosy fire. The smell of coffee and fresh scones baked on the wood stove ...generously slathered in butter and crab apple jelly. Good times. :)
I hope to make it happen LOL.
Made this a gallon of crab apples added rose water and 5 oranges and cinnamon. WOW! 👍🏼👍🏼 it tasted like Christmas. My apples were greenish
Than sounds very good Dianne I love the flavour of rosemary.
Grandma made crabapple jelly every year and every year it tasted so good. This video refreshed my memory. Thanks Dale, this was a real treat.
Thank you David I planted two Crab Apple trees two years ago should have my own crab apples in a few years.
Looks yummy, beautiful color. I'm going to make this.
hi dale ,dave from Orillia Ontario ,always wait for your new videos and am never disappointed thanks for the great job on the jelly . always the best to you and yours.
Thank you very much Dave for the kind words.
Goodness Dale, this looks wonderful. I'll give this a try. The rooster crowing reminds me of the mornings, during breakfast, growing up. Lovely to hear.
Thank you Dana.
I use cheese cloth tied over a broom stick. Those apples are stunning
I love your videos Dale. Lately they help me fall asleep. Such a soothing voice.
Thank you I get a lot of comments on the voice.
Thank you I have two small crab apple trees and it looks like there might be a few blossom spurs fingers crossed.
My grandma made spiced crab apples when I was a kid. They were whole with stems left on she put them in a jar with yummy spices and she canned them. We got to have one in a bowl with a scoop of ice cream. Delish. Your jelly looks great.
Thank you Eileen I have planted two carb apple trees but I think I will have to wait a few years yet before I get any apples.
I haven't eaten crab apple jelly for a long time. I love it though. We used to serve it with meats or cheese - more like a chutney than a jam on toast. Enjoy your videos. Thank you.
Thank you Hazel this is tart and sweet at the same time I think it would go very well with cheese.
That look so good. Thank you so much for sharing your receipe. I never saw crapapple with this inside dark red.
Wow
Thank you
Have a lovely big ornamental crab apple tree in full bloom in the front yard at the moment.
Nice simple recipe. Never seen crabapples that big before. The jelly looks very nice. Best wishes Bob.
Thanks Bob most of the ornamental garden variety crab trees have been bred to produce a tiny berry like apple because people don't want the apples just the spring flowers. These are from a true crab apple tree likely white flowers in the spring.
Very large at least to me. Thanks
Lovely color and texture, glad it turned out well. I've not made jelly, only jam, but might have to try now. Just that one extra step to strain out the pulp. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you. I hope you have good success with yours. Depending on the fruit you use you may need to add pectin but it is rarely required with apples .
I make mine with pears too taste fantastic both flavors just seem to go together. My mom made it that way we loved it.
Sounds very good
For some strange reason, every time I watch one of your videos, I get hungry! Looked great Dale, think my sister has a crab apple tree, have to try this.
Thank you Buster I hear that from other people too. LOL
The jelly looks very tasty. you are a very good cook.
Thank you I do love to cook.
they were some nice crabapples mine are light red and yellow, nice job.
Another great cook-a-long Dale. I have never tried to make that before but will definitely give it a go. Many thanks.
Thank you Aaron I like that it only has three ingredients and the only one you need to buy is the sugar, if you have a crab apple tree of course.
Looks good Dale, the jelly has very nice color.
I don't think I had ever seen apples before that were coloured all the way through.
Amazing color, When I was a kid we always reused the lids and rings, If the lid was not damaged it was reused, The only thing that can happen is it don't seal, If that happens it goes in the fridge. But I see on youtube everyone seems to always use now ones.

Thanks for sharing Dale.
I think your memory is right Alan I have never seen this variety of Apple before, don't know what it is, with the red colour throughout the apple.
I make jam and jelly. Never made this kind, love the color.
It is one of my favourites.
Yum yum.....simply beautiful jelly!
Thank you.
Such a beautiful color for the jam! Bravo, Dale! 🎉
Thank you it turned out quite nice.
Looks yummy Dale! Thanks for sharing. I've never tried crabapple jelly but my grandma always made crabapple pickles when I was little. So amazing! A sweet pickle with cinnamon and cloves. If you ever get your hands on more crabapples I highly recommend.

Thank you.
I look forward to trying this jelly recipe when my young tree is producing enough fruit.
Thank you it is certainly one of the easiest jellies to make and very good.
What a haul!!! Oh, I also really need a jam funnel.
Thank you Andy. They sell this cheap one in a kit here along with a few other useful items for canning. I had a very nice glass one that was my mothers until I dropped it on the ceramic floor LOL.
10:44 is the best part :)
Hi dale , going to try this first time. do i have to remove the seeds before cooking?
No not necessary.
Dale, Have you ever tried making apple jelly flavored with roses? It's quite lovely with a subtle taste of rose. I have a great old recipe. You could use the petals from your huge rose bush in front of your house!
No I have never heard of that one before sounds interesting.
Love this program so easy to follow 💓
Thank you
Nice job and I hope you enjoy it.
Thank you I'm sure I will.
I'm sitting here enjoying a coffee and a leftover homemade biscuit that's been heavily buttered and pan fried,ok ok I'm getting up now to at least get some kinda fruit preserve, thank you Dale, lol have a great day

It looks delicious Dale! My favorite jelly is strawberry, and raspberry with pieces of fruit in it.

Thank you what surprised me about these ones is that they were red through and through.
Thank you and glad to hear that you had success with the Hokkaido Pumpkins. I'm looking forward to making the soup again too.

amazing colour for Jelly :)
I agree if I didn't know better I would have thought colouring had been added.
My favorite jelly of all time!
I think I agree.
This looks so good!
Thank you.
thanks for showing me this. i think i have a crab apple tree in my back yard I'm gonna try this out cause i like crab apple jelly.
Thank you Melissa good luck with your jelly.
That's a lot of sugar. I love crab apple jelly though ànd yours looks so good.
As always, I really enjoy your videos - and I don't even cook! (My wife cans, and I'm on the support team - lifting and cleaning). Be well.
Troy
Thank you Troy. I could really use someone to do the clean up LOL.
Congratulations, man ! Seems really good. But we live now in South AMerica and we have no crab apple here...
Thank you.
yum! I made some fig preserves from my tree. nothing beats fresh homemade jellies and jama. I pity pwople who have to rely. on store bought.
I wish I had figs enough to do that. Boughten fig preserve is always so expensive. A few years ago I worked on a small farm in Tuscany and they had a large fig tree and a large walnut tree. The lady made a fig and walnut jam that was to die for.
my sister makes grape jelly. it is good
I make a grape jam that I like.
Our crabapples are red and white use a littlevanilla with. Sugar so good
Sounds great!
Lovely jelly Dale! Made some when I was young and living on the farm, but it wasn't that vibrant red color, would you happen to know what variety of crab apple tree that was?
Thank you. Unfortunately no my friend has had the tree for a long time and doesn't remember the variety.
I'll look it up, those where big for crab apples and red trough out, I can probably find something similar, thanks my friend.
Thx
Looking at your jelly want to cook the same.
Thank you good luck with your jelly.
beauteous!!!!
Dale,I love the pottery on your table where did it come from?
A few years ago a friend had a small gift shop with a lot of imported artifacts from third world countries and I bought a number of things there the set on the table is a cream & Sugar and a salt & pepper set with little spoons, with frogs on each of the pieces. @2:13 on the video the apple at the 8:00 o'clock place on the clock is looking at us.
OOOOKKKK
I will try it :-)
Hope you like it!
with those dang crab apples. i don't think 20cps of sugar would totally kill their tartness. LOL!!
Especially these ones they were very sour.
I'm watching your video right now and doing it myself. I planted a small crabapple tree in the front of my house in our new place and I decided I would pick them they were beautifully red and very few even had issues with them. If you have animals chickens or something like that they would love the pulp.
