Because that’s what it is, “Byzantine” is just a label made by jealous westerners, in reality its just the continuation of classical Greco-Roman civilization
Btw, the whole concept of the papacy was made up by the bishops of Rome. Initially, they had no special position or authority - Rome was just one of four equally important Patriarchies. However, the bishops of Rome eventually forged some documents, claiming that Emperor Constantine had gifted them with land and authority over all other bishops and patriarchs. (Because the first bishop of Rome had been St. Peter). So basically, the bishop just elevated himself to the position of Stewart of Christ on Earth. It's really crazy if you think about it. Today, the Vatican even admits that the documents were forged.
@@untruelie2640 seems like a very big oversight on kag's part. this was also the first video where I noticed a significant amount of bias and inaccuracies on their channel
You're a bit wrong here. The Donation of Constantine and all that is correct, but the Pope prior to that wasn't just "one of four equally important Patriarchs". The Pope had always been acknowledged as the "First Among Equals", and was always the most prestigious of the Patriarchs. The main conflict came from disagreement over what "First Among Equals" is supposed to mean exactly.
@@Vjeimy The Patriarch of Jerusalem was never that important and was the least prestigious of the bunch, only established in the 5th Century. So it is a slight omission, but not the worst inaccuracy.
7:10 Most of the germanic tribes were already christians when they formed their kingdoms on the territory of the Western Empire. However, almost all of them (Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Vandals, etc.) were followers of Arianism and did not accept the doctrine of the Nicean mainstream church. (Because they had been christianized by arian missionaries). This distinction between the germanic rulers and their latin subjects helped to maintain their coherence as an elite, but it also isolated them. This would prove fatal for the Ostrogoths and the Vandals. The Franks and the Visigoths however eventually gave up Arianism and accepted the latin church.
The Franks were largely pagans, not Arians. Clovis I was the first Frankish monarch to convert to Christianity (from paganism) and he did so accepting the Nicene faith, choosing Catholicism over Arianism by and large due to his wife, St. Clotilde.
Only the west called and still cals byzantium as eastern roman empire. The byzantines called it baseileia ton romaion (speak: vasilia ton romaion --i like in injury and ai like e in evil) in slang romabia and they called theselves romaioi (ai=e, oi=i), later romanoi and much later romioi (oi= plural i). Now romanoi and romioi means not roman exactly but kinda romish or greekroman. The video you are comenting on is biased western heretic propaganda with tons of mistakes.

In Greek School, we learn Byzantium History as Greek History and extension of Classic Hellenic (Greek ) Civilization
