Every dealer would be like that if customers were content paying the price on the window sticker. LOL

this is why the world needs sales people
@@AlWorth9738 this whole comment is about why car dealerships are not walmart you are welcome to go to a dealership and negotiate for 3 hours
“Avoided the dealership for some reason I don’t know”
The reason is because it’s a dealership.
While working in sales at a Ford store in SoCal in '08, a hillbilly looking couple came in and bought a Shelby GT500 all cash then went across the street and bought a high end Dodge Challenger all cash. Our sales manager later told us that couple had just won the lottery. You can't always tell who's got money and who's a tire kicker.
I hope they are still experiencing that happiness they felt that day buying two cars, today.
I worked at a dealership where a lotto winner came in, she had the 6' check in her car (the trade) which also had a dead rat in it, she also bought her boyfriend a Prowler, the kids were dropped off at the mall for a spending spree, she was broke within a year.

Bill had a Jaguar and a Lexus to experience both ends of the Reliability Spectrum !
I know the current owner of that 959 has been offered some insane money for it. Well deserved considering the significance of the car with respect to Show & Display law.
oh, hey ed!!
Working in the automotive industry for 20+ years, I’ve gotten the biggest tips from the most average looking guys. I don’t treat people differently based on what you look like. I treat everyone with respect and do my job to the best of my ability. I’ve even been tipped after admitting I’ve messed up to the customer. They respected my honesty. Business is just honesty and respect. I love it…
He is the epitome of a car salesman, nearly 100% is complete exaggeration.
You think? This was incredibly boring.
I don't blame Daimler Benz for not wanting to bullet proof the Mercedes. Honestly, if I was in their shoes I wouldn't want to be on the hook if something happened either!
Just last week I met a retired guy who used to work for Microsoft in the 80's and 90's at a fairly high level. He recounted seeing the 959 around the Microsoft campus quite regularly. Must have been some sight back then as it still is today.
I worked at Microsoft in the 90s in building 1 and 4 where BillG was. He usually drove his Lexus and never brought in the 959 because it was literally kept in U.S. customs storage for 13 years (from 1988 to 2001). BillG used to show us pictures of his 959, but that's it.
@@MrHamlet That had to have been harsh. "Yeah, I have one of the coolest cars in the world, but it's serving life in Customs jail and I don't know if it'll ever get paroled and if it'll still be driveable."
I worked on vehicles owned by both Bill Gates and Paul Allen in the late 90’s / early 2000’s. Both were always under NDA, and Bill’s vehicles always accompanied a security guard who stood there and watched every move you made. Paul was a bit more laid back, but his vehicles were armored (every one). Trying to run wiring and do custom work in an armored vehicle is next-level and took a tremendous amount of time. If there was any warranty work to be done, Paul would provide transportation to any of his remote residences (including flights, rental cars, etc.), for us to come to him.
Whats NDA ?

Yeah, boring
Sounds like a car salesman.
My grandfather got his '92 190E 2.3 from that Mercedes dealership
Excellent choice.
Dealerships are such a pain in the butt. Why does it take 4+ hours to buy a car!!
The longer you're there, the more you spend.
For sure
The last few times I bought a car, I was out in under an hour from the time I decided which car I wanted. Paperwork, financing, etc was always easy.
@@ViperKillerWannabe Same here. I work the deal through email. My last delivery was about 30 min.
It only takes that long if you're stupid. If you show up knowing exactly what you want and exactly what you are willing to pay you can be in and out in probably 45mins if they agree to your price.
Imagine that he AVOIDED DEALERSHIPS 😂😂😂
Actually a smart move by Mercedes, liability is just too much
I wouldn’t hangout at the dealer if I were Bill Gates either. And I work for the dealer 🙄
I had an S124 just like in the thumbnail (and in German spec). Lovely thing.
So sweet!
They nearly made an S140, I wonder if they'd have offered that in a Guard (bullet resistant) version.
They could have added a counterweight spring to the window regulator.
Or swap to a crank arm.
I would’ve met Skid Mark out in the parking lot after work.
YEP
Actually, I would have stopped him in that moment and reminded him that I was up next. No, actually, I'd NEVER be a salesman. Not for anything. I have standards. :)
That's almost ten minutes I'll never get back.
As for the miles on Bill Gate's 959, a former employer of mine used to take his 930 Turbo to track days at Laguna Seca and he was on a first name basis with Bill, since he would have the 959 trailered down to run. My guess is that he also had it brought to other PCA track days along the west coast.
I wonder if Bill ever let Jeffrey Epstein drive his 959
what else did they share ?

@@random-person1 how else would they pay tolls or order drive thru? there was a top gear episode on an armored car and it has q window opening for that purpose
@alexm566 , the whole purpose of BP windows is to be bulletproof. If it's open, it ain't gonna be bulletproof any longer. As for drive-ins, seriously? And tolls, where in the world would a childminder need to take the children that would require she went over a toll bridge? And again, opening a BP window defeats the point of having them in the first place. Just ask Biden if he can open the window of the beast.

Eww, what's with the goofy bumpers and the "slapped on" aftermarket-look third brake light on a lot of European cars in the US? I assume it for California regs? We had a similar thing with imports, like some of my classics, needing a rear fog lamp which was mandatory from 1980 onwards, and then Japanese stuff all had to have aftermarket security else you'd never get insurance.

Who rolls down the window in a bulletproof vehicle?
Despite the fact that the title of this video was really only mentioned in passing, I enjoyed the story, but I wouldn't think an armored Benz would that hard to come by. I know the photos in these videos don't always correspond perfectly to the story being told, so I'm not sure if we wanted an armored 124 wagon, but I've seen plenty of MB's from that era that were armored, especially all the 126's that luminaries such as Saddam Hussein, Idi Amin, and the like were riding around in! I think a lot of them came out of the secondary market, but I'm pretty sure Benz was doing it themselves at one point or another. Anyway, good story!
Kidnapping he probably wanted that car because of the likelihood that someone might you never know but it's smart that he wanted a armored Mercedes-Benz glad he was able to get a Volvo
smart move by mercedes, if you know anything about weapons technology you know that theres no such thing as "bullet proof". if there was every single military vehicle and infantry would be covered head to toe in it. huge difference between bullet resistant and bullet proof.

You're a dealer and you ask why a person famous for not wanting to waste time would not come to a dealership... where people would waste his time trying to sell him a car that he doesn't want?

That was Barrier Motors. Family owned dealer that bought up all the premium brands franchises in the 80s-90s.
BillG drove that 90s Lexus for decades. He couldn't drive the 959 until 2001 because it was kept in storage by U.S. Customs for 13 years.
There was a time in the early 90s that dealers didn't take us nerdy Microsoft employees seriously. Once they picked up on the jeans/t-shirt garb of the Microsoft millionaires, that tune changed. Some Microsofties would wear their badges on their hips or around their necks to get attention. It was very cringe and something I never did.
