Imagine being a big time hunter, you’ve just killed the boss, then a trio of hunters just emerges from the shadows and just starts throwing scrap at you and essentially stoning you to death
I feel like decoys are most useful when you want to do things like break cage/coop lanterns, open up glass windows, and barred doors, etc but your rocking a weapon and ammo type that doesn't hold much ammo or easy means of replenishment, like a nitro/uppercut or avto.
Yeah, I thought about putting that in, but it can’t open a door, so I decided not. But I suppose it’s loud like a melee like someone’s trying to break it.
This is really useful for making people think you're trying to bash a door down. You may be able to bait shots through the door to waste their ammo and reveal what weapons they have. You can also have buddies breach another entrance while enemies may be stacking up to resist an assault through the bashed door. Either way, can make for easy outplays, as few players will ignore someone bashing on a door
Here’s something I think you missed this list got long so have some numbers 1) if you have decoy resupply you can get decoys from deployable ammo boxes but you only get 6 and 3 instead 12 and 6 2) blank won’t go off if used in water and can still silently confuse water devils 3) decoy’s thrown at doors will make the sound melee damage sound and probably one of the best ways to make the enemy think you are at the door but it won’t make the hunter melee sound so it will sound like you have silent killer but the enemy might think it’s a decoy
And I thought I was including too much stuff already! I debated including 2 and 3, but felt like I was going over too many edges cases. Point 1 I should have absolutely considered. Good catch!
I love how interactive the cheaper tools are. Even the scope is convenient while solo. You can almost run anything. I tend to run a melee variant of infantry or rival for solo to free up a tool slot & like to pick tools that really cover multiple areas. Decoys can set off alarms as you sneak which is very deliberate. Throwing them at a roof or a spot near wherever the enemy is hiding behind can divert their aim and it really comes to shine in a heavy forested area where they're as likely to react to a footstep as they are to a gunshot. Fusees can light a body with minimal effort and similar to choke bombs can kind of give away enemy locations behind cover for a better informed wallbang.
Years ago, when the game was early access, the player base and gameplay was vastly more tuned towards stealth. I those golden days, Decoys were never out of my tool bar. I used to bait teams left and right with them, instead of relocating, making them relocate into my sights by baiting with a noise trap. Good ol' days...
I recently started my dive into Decoys after seeing a teammate throw one that actually successfully distracted an enemy player for a few seconds. They're great like you've said but I did find one noteworthy con to them. When you are replenishing from toolboxes and looting hunter corpses it will often replenish your Decoy supply rather than give you something actually useful like a use of your First Aid Kit or a consumable, which obviously isn't great.
This is why decoy supply is almost necessary. I wish there was a version that worked for throwing knives though, as I rarely take them for this same reason. Throwing axes, however, are quite easy to see. Nevertheless, for both knives and axes you sometimes lose them in weird places that the game arbitrarily won't let you to take them from, even if you know right where they are thanks to blade seer (or paying attention)
Decoy Fusees are great too. Still quiet enough to take out a dog kennel or chicken coop in a pinch, and also will light things on fire like the blank fire ones will. Probably my favorite use case is to toss one at the top of a lander you plan on climbing up. If someone is holding it, they will back off for fear of being killed by a dynamite, and the hissing sound will cover the sound of you climbing, meaning when they return you can surprise them by being up the ladder.
Regular decoys are extremely useful in extended boss lair sieges, I tricked a few enemies into thinking I was crouching on the opposite side from where I was actually pushing and it made them waste several explosives trying to kill me in the wrong spot lol
I find decoy fuses to be the most useful (fake nade for pushing/checking campers) and have used them defensively to light oil patches before to stop being pushed. same interaction as blank fire decoy but lower range/ammo
I agree. I’ve been digging into them some. I find that they can do anything a blank fire decoy can do. (I know they can light oil, not sure if they instantly explode barrels).
One problem I've found in the 5* lobbies my crackshot friend gets me into is that people can learn to distinguish them from actual throwables. The fuse sounds a little different and they don't make as heavy a thunk as real dynamite do. Frags actually sound a little metallic, so they're the easiest to distinguish. But yeah, they're the most directly useful decoy in a fight, but also the least flexible.
BIG tip when using decoys in a PVP setting is that you can open blinds as well (like doors) and the MOST important is that you can throw the decoy at a wall, making 1 footstep noise, and when it falls to the ground it makes another. I recently used this to fake out movement on a catwalk (i was at ground level and threw decoys at the wall of a catwalk in catfish grove). This will both make the decoys more believable (since throwing 2 decoys that fast is impossible solo (can be done with teammates tho)) and you get more uses out of them. Another tip is, if you are in a flanking battle with someone and you know generally where they are, and they know generally where you are, you can either throw 2-3 blank fires at your feet in sequence (making him believe its blankfires) or my favorite, throw one to the right or left of you (facing enemy) and immediately peak with the impact. You can also "plant" explosives with Daunless and/or Hivebombs in water (like throwing hive bombs in the water next to an extract) and trigger them with the decoys.
I find that normal decoys sound exactly like a hunter quickly uncrouching and walking a bit only when you throw then into a wall somewhat low. That way it makes two steps, just like a hunter would, not just one isolated step.
one the note of making multiple steps, it'd be super cool to have a trait that let you skip them across water like a stone for 3-4 step sounds if you charged the throw for a moment
I always bring decoy fuses. They are phenomenal for covering revives and making enemies move. Also, players almost always respect the decoy even if they know you have them
Never tried it, but I guess during the pact-events (so far: devils moon & tide of shadows) regular decoys could be used with shadow (grounded pact) to gather & direct AI as minions. Shadow makes breaking green barrels risk-free as well.

You can harm yourself with decoy via ricochet and waste healing stations, for example on supplies. And with Decoy Supply, you can waste ammo boxes ofc.
I actually use blank fire decoys a good bit in Soul Survivor (Quickplay) Works really well since everyone is on edge due to there being a lot of enemies
Decoys are awesome, especially with silenced weapons, as sound is so important it can cause so much confusion between silent shots, phantom shots and ghost foot steps. So fun.
Very nice video! I will pull up with decoy's in my next bounty hunt for sure. Also your avatar works really well for the video I think, it is simple and effective.
Decoys have always been a staple of all my solo loadouts. When you learn how to use them tastefully, which comes with a broader understanding of the game, they will net you many kills that likely had no idea you were running solo or what direction they were even killed from.
Solo play with bows is the most useful time for blank fire to make it seem like a fight since the third and fifth are shotgun so use them sparingly and you can throw pistol in water or far on your fourth to do 2 shotgun shots guns further and throw pistol behind you this makes them confused on teams because no one suspects you to be 5 feet away when there's a gun fight 20 meters away at another building
I finally got the Easier Than Mining Sulpur achievement by hiding in the nook you can climb into on the left barn of Davant Ranch with blanks and decoys. I just threw them over the hay to down into the main barn to fool everyone into killing each other.
surprised you didnt mention chaos bombs and chaos bolts in this, since they also have a lot of the same niche uses in addition to being good distractions. Also: since you mentioned aggravating monsters, since the immolators recently gained poison immunity, poison ammo can be used for a long range way to turn immolators aggressively searching.
If you throw two blank fire decoys straight upwards, they should collide with each other and explode in the air. Pretty useless but could be confusing to other players at least. You can also do this with an explosive followed by a blank fire or a decoy but will probably end up killing yourself. With a sticky bomb though, it will be stuck midair until it explodes for some reason
oooh so he JUST found out about decoys, fun fact, when someone sees a muzzle flash next to them that isnt their teammate, typically they may look away, also decoy fusees also benefit from decoy supply i believe and work about the same as the blank fires where they ignite slicks and barrels.
Normal decoys are better for solo, but for duo/trio I'd say blank fires are better. With a teammate, you can both throw blank fires staggered so it sounds like a shootout, making it much more likely that someone will poke their head to third party this fake fight than a solo throwing it.
Love using decoys with the Bomb Lance, it gets people looking at one end of a compound while I sneak behind and hit them while the banish noise covers me
I use blank fire decoys alot when I’m playing solo to make players think there is more than just me. If you lose the element of surprise, having as strong of a presence as possible is key
I still remember when i decided to use decoys for a day and distracted enemies a few times which actually got me a few kills. The highlight was when i was at fort camrik killing the boss i heard a team suddently get close so i went out on the wood bridge on betwen the buildings, second floor and started frowing blanks inside to make it seem like i was fighting the boss. That made the enemy team get closer which allowed Me and my teamate to jump down right next to them and shotgun them instantly😂(it was duos)
Don’t worry, as soon as a match end, you’ll start thinking “I should have used a decoy there!” And then proceed to never remember it at the right time… 80% of my experience…
Ah, the times I’ve trolled my team mates into jump scaring about „enemies“ being right next to them or into confusion about why they are taking 1 dmg. Sorry guys! Great video.
As a "PC GAMER" (Using Cloud Service so not a true PC guy) I am falling in love with high stakes, high octane but equally slow and methodical games like PUBG and now HUNT, HUNT is not available for me on the cloud service but these in depth and comprehensive videos are really scratching my itch for this game at least for now. Games like this are what used to be the norm. DUES:EX Human Revolution-MGS-and Splinter cell with the details etc. This game seemingly combines the vast and expansive Open World PVE experience with scary and fun PVP action. Definitely getting a sub from me!
The mechanical depth and variety of ways to play are a big part of what keeps me coming back to Hunt. Glad to scratch the itch! I hope you can get into the bayou eventually!
@@lucasschigart2721 So you could use a new objective! :P I've got most of them, but I'm dragging my feet on the quickplay ones (I rarely play solo), and The hammer throw.
@@HuntShowdownLab to be fair, the Hammer throw is the hardest. I had a full raster of free hunters and waited until I had an offering that gave me 2 skill points to the raster before I started grinding it. Took 7 or 8 hunters. Btw, throwing anything but the Hammer doesn't count. If I had known that, I would have had it secound try.
Great video, decoys are really underrated. Don't know if you're a "build" guy or not. But I think you might like trying my personal build, as I dont see anyone use it and it might give you some fun matches or even content. Berthier Deadeye with half spitzer/half normal, and hand crossbow with half poison/half normal. Can compete at virtually any range. Hold down bodies, kill bosses quick, and you get the special fact that splitting berthier ammo gives you 3 extra rounds of long ammo for FREE. Also its now made better by the ammo changes by bringing an ammo box, more split types is more free ammo from one crate.
I (eventually) want to do a video on balancing your build. I underestimate the Berthier a lot. I was using it the other day, and it was great! I had one clip where I got a kill with each of the 3 shots. Being able to have a 3 shot clip AND a second ammo type is a pretty neat special feature for it.
i see one issue with decoys... you can throw axe across whole compound . but decoy have 20+ m range. i wish they would rework this. just add some distance
With blank fire decoys you can fake that you are in a gun fight. Useful for drawing out a enemy that might be trying to res there downed teammate. Throw one blank in a vary high ark and try to time another throw for when the first one hits the ground so that you get shots that sound faster then what you could throw. This is so that experienced players are less likely to think that it's a decoy. After that switch to one of your gun's fire a round before swapping back to the blanks and throwing another. You want your flash and the blanks to be separate. This is risky but if they take the bait all you have to do is just turn to the enemy that is likely trying to res there friend
I dont usually play with decoys since i find i already have to few tool slots but i remember if it was when i was leveling my bloodline or if it was some challange or something with use decoys but i was sneaking up on a group and saw some birds so i threw one on the opposite side so they flew towards me, made the hunters look the other way and i got one downed and hurt the other before they could do anything. I think this was before they made them make foot step sounds tho.
Had a fight with a guy on a roof and he lost track of me, while he was in the open I threw a blank fire to the other side of the building. He ended up looking away and got a nice headshot on him to end the fight.
Have not played this game at all but This trick is what I use in PUBG, I usually take a smoke or decoy grenade and throw it in the enemies direction to gain their attention and cause them to leave cover so I can spray them down or hit a shot with my sniper/DMR. This is very effective in PUBG so maybe in this game you could fake someone out and make them leave cover because they think it's a grenade.

@@GODMODELAGGER Actually there is a fakeout grenade in this game, coulda been touched on here too, but most people probably understand how to use it well enough.
decoys are great, and really good to distract people too, they make a noise like a hunter taking a step, I've distracted quite a few people with them to have them turn to the noise while I shoot them in the back of the head
The issue with them is when you go to grab a toolbox or loot a body and you get some decoys instead of a medkit or such that you need far more than a decoy. I've known of their uses, but until other items take priority or looting fills the whole bag, I would never take them.
If you watch the whole video he mentions that the Decoy Supply trait feels necessary in order to avoid this exact issue. It's 1 trait point you can get from respecing iron devastator or something, really no reason not to take it unless you don't have it unlocked yet
@@dakotabarrett5585 True, you get 4 regular decoys back from one box. I find that it's pretty difficult to find more than 4 occasions to use a decoy per ammo box I find, though. That said, I do agree with you that there should be a ranking to determine what a toolbox gives you. Consumables should come first, then medkit charges, and lastly consumable tools like knives, chokes, and decoys. Heck there have been plenty of times I've received two chokes from packmule when I'm entirely out of consumables. Feels bad
@@CetomimusGillii Agreed. I don't know why Crytech doesn't have any priority systems in place. I can't tell you how many times I'm trying to disarm an enemy's trap and instead I shut and open the door repeatedly.
@@dakotabarrett5585 Yep, that stuff all needs fixed too. Just recently they made it easier to pick up guns off the ground, but still if people put mines anywhere near a lantern or door, it's torture trying to find the one pixel that will let you disarm them
Maaan, I am the decoy player of my team. Getting me own teammates very confused, at times. But decoy on standing lanterns is huge for 3/4 bosses and many mobs
I'd say frontiersman is very good for an extra medkit, especially if you have doctor and physician. And yeah having it is mostly for health and traps, an extra slot for decoy is just a side effect
If you hit a grunt twice with a regular decoy, you cripple them, causing them to shuffle around at a very slow speed, but I've never found a good use for it. It's just kind of funny
Surprisingly you missed the simple fact that throwing decoys does make noise in and of itself, unless they changed it. It is/was a very subtle noise, existent, nonetheless.
decoys in my experience have only worked in high elo or brain dead elo. in both lobbies they become like extremely unnecessary. just bring traps / throwing knives and or axes and avoid the sound traps or just blitz through everything doesn’t rly matter when you can outgun them. i wish there was more fun uses of decoys other than being basically useless
Yeah, they’re not a meta loadouts, but neither is double terminus with slugs and levering… and nothings going to stop me from doing that from time to time!
Yeah, I feel like the Pitcher range should be the default. Especially with the Blank Fire ones, it's hard to get them far enough away to be meaninful without pitcher.
@@HuntShowdownLab yep, the throwing range is the main problem with blanks, followed closely by the inability to choose what gun they mimic. I know Crytek really struggles with menus, but if they could find a way to let us select the blank we're taking, it'd make them far more competitive for those precious tool slots. How many times have we all thrown a blank only to get a Dolch report that instantly tells everyone you're using blanks? Speaking of tool slots, (rant incoming) maybe there should be some kind of division between major tools and minor gadgets or something. Like 3 slots for the former and 2 or 3 for the latter. Major tools being your melee, chokes, and first aid, stuff that's really hard to justify leaving. Maybe that's overkill, but any way we'd have more than 1 negotiable tool slot would be good for the game, I think. You'd probably see less stalemates and clueless campers if people had more tactical tools to keep things moving along.
Problem with the decoys and most other tools is the tool bar is too competitive just like the consumables. You are already forced to bring knife and medkit which leaves 2 slots. And now the throwing axe is probably the most useful at silencing horses and 1 shorting armoured and hounds. You are left with last slot which is usually choke bomb for area denial. Crytek really needs to buff the other tools.
I like the idea of either moving the Merlot to a dedicated slot or adding 1-2 small tool slots. Traps chokes etc we almost always be taken over decoys, lanterns, and spygly
I typically run throwing axes as my melee, even if the melee takes a lot of stamina you can just throw them which takes less and doesn't have much of a penalty for use while you have no stamina. This video will probably fill the fourth slot i have with the decoy now because i have the slot.

I like to think all the people saying “decoys don’t work” are the ones losing to them.
Great info. I love the door bar one!
Glad you liked it!
Very good video!
I'm your 900th subscriber! 🎉
🎉 thank you!
If you throw two blank fire decoys straight upwards, they should collide with each other and explode in the air. Pretty useless but could be confusing to other players at least. You can also do this with an explosive followed by a blank fire or a decoy but will probably end up killing yourself. With a sticky bomb though, it will be stuck midair until it explodes for some reason
wow theres a lot of great hunt channels popping up rn, good work :) i def see this channel breaking 1k soon
Thanks!
Awesome video. I recently got back into this game and you just gave some great info on an item I never think about. Keep it up!!
oooh so he JUST found out about decoys, fun fact, when someone sees a muzzle flash next to them that isnt their teammate, typically they may look away, also decoy fusees also benefit from decoy supply i believe and work about the same as the blank fires where they ignite slicks and barrels.
You make Hunt infograph, I immediately subscribe
Definitely learned something from this. I'll have to start bringing them more often!
Wow, this is super useful, and the editing is on point!
You earned my sub, kind sir
Awesome, thank you! There's more to come. I've got another one in the works about Bullet Velocity!
Ooo spamming them into a lair! Great strat!
I love this video. Im absorbing so much info for something I know damn well I'll never use myself lol.
Don’t worry, as soon as a match end, you’ll start thinking “I should have used a decoy there!” And then proceed to never remember it at the right time… 80% of my experience…
I've been doing that for a long time! Nice seeing a vid covering it.
Ah, the times I’ve trolled my team mates into jump scaring about „enemies“ being right next to them or into confusion about why they are taking 1 dmg. Sorry guys! Great video.
Had no idea about the animal pen thing. Great info.
Omg, splinter cell was DOPE
@@Schimml0rd 100%, Lightbulb assassin. Those florescents didn't stand a chance!
I once won a puickplay by exploding the last enemy with a decoy on a red barrel. That was amazing.
Nice. It's hard enough to do, they should give it an achievement. maybe then more people would be forced to give decoys some love. :)
@@HuntShowdownLab then I would need to pull it of again, so that I can still claim having all the achievments^^°
@@lucasschigart2721 So you could use a new objective! :P
I've got most of them, but I'm dragging my feet on the quickplay ones (I rarely play solo), and The hammer throw.
I agree
Very interesting. I really only considered blanks to be very useful, but with all this info you laid out I might actually prefer the regular ones.
Yeah, I’m not sure which I prefer. Blanks are nice because they always have a good use. The normal are nice because they have a much bigger range.
I am still waiting for a bag of poisoned sausages that I can throw at hell hounds and water devils to get rid of them silently.
I use decoys all the time, super useful tool
Have not played this game at all but This trick is what I use in PUBG, I usually take a smoke or decoy grenade and throw it in the enemies direction to gain their attention and cause them to leave cover so I can spray them down or hit a shot with my sniper/DMR. This is very effective in PUBG so maybe in this game you could fake someone out and make them leave cover because they think it's a grenade.

@@GODMODELAGGER Actually there is a fakeout grenade in this game, coulda been touched on here too, but most people probably understand how to use it well enough.
Few days ago I started using decoys as a lantern breakers because at lvl 1 after prestiege its the only thing i can buy rather than flares....
Blank Fire Decoys are mandatory in my solo builds
Also when you hit a grunt with a decoy and do a heavy attack with a rifle, the head shot will kill the grunt.
You can completly cripple grunts when you hit them 2 times, that can be distracting
Throwing decoys at bells just to annoy the team fighting the boss is a good time too
decoys are great, and really good to distract people too, they make a noise like a hunter taking a step, I've distracted quite a few people with them to have them turn to the noise while I shoot them in the back of the head
Just did this tonight! Great way to start a fight one man up!
You can hit spider with decoy to force him off walls and ceiling.
Subbed. I had ok luck using them to throw off teams when I'm solo
@@CetomimusGillii That doesn't make it fill the bag though. It's just a little more.
Frontiersmen is an excellent trait! I was eating specifically with drcoys interaction with it.
Hmmm, I didn’t notice it, I’ll have to listen closer next time.
They are mandatory in all my solo builds
They’re definitely most useful going solo.
You can kill a leech with just one decoy and heal your bar with ghoul trait equipped.
decoys in my experience have only worked in high elo or brain dead elo. in both lobbies they become like extremely unnecessary. just bring traps / throwing knives and or axes and avoid the sound traps or just blitz through everything doesn’t rly matter when you can outgun them. i wish there was more fun uses of decoys other than being basically useless
Yeah, they’re not a meta loadouts, but neither is double terminus with slugs and levering… and nothings going to stop me from doing that from time to time!
my favorite way to use decoys is to troll my duo partner into thinking we are getting shot at
Next level strats!
One of my favorite unshared clips is a teammate trying to figure out why the lantern he was about to run under broke… hehehe
i never was taught this, but somehow i just assumed they can do all these things and used them the day i started to do these things :P
Gd I didn't even know that turning on generators would power lightbulbs, never mind using decoys to silently break the bulbs
u should be able to throw em much fourther. give em a buff. they are under used. give the hunters a slingshot to the decouys to shoot em properly ! :D
I have been using these since day one, where have you all been??
500+ hours i just learned chokes can get rid of poison clouds
Decoys are a great way of irritating your enemies and denying yourself healthkits. They can be useful, but so can a healthkit.
The best buff they could give decoys is the ability to grab a couple and throw them one after another
Or just reduce the time to throw. It feels awkwardly slow
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Problem with the decoys and most other tools is the tool bar is too competitive just like the consumables.
I disagree. You can swap knife for melee attachment, and medkit for vigor and regen syringes. Also Smugglers can just use water and rain to heal.
My favorite thing is that decoy opens door bar but thrown axe doesn't.
“Distraction category” items seem to be underused a lot
They don’t justify a tool slot in a lot of loadouts. I almost feel they should add an extra small slot limited to less used tools. Decoys/spyglass/etc
Great video, I like your style dude. Please moar wideos
Neenoh made a video about getting kills with decoys a few years ago
ooo, i'll have to hunt it down. Just saw a clip from Ratcha this week getting one with a blank fire.
