I was hoping this game would be this week's video, glad you picked this one up and so did I. I dont usually play character action, but this game is so incredible that it transcends the genre. Ive been stuck for hours on the chapter 2 boss, but ive been enjoying the challenge.
Also, big ups to beating Wandering Wight so early on. I had to level up and unlock way more stuff just to stand a chance. You are a master with the monkey man lol

@bgirlNOZOMI there seems to be a fair bit of debate on if Black Myth: Wukong should be counted as Character Action (usually games like DMC, Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta, Darksiders, Soulstice, Heavenly Sword, God of War, Dante's Inferno and others).
It doesn't really fall within the realms of soulslike either despite some people saying it's like one.
For an easy way of settling it i could say it's simply Action/Adventure. Somewhat nebulous term but describes what goes on-- there's an adventure with action (mainly combat).
One could describe Kya: Dark Lineage this way, or Clash: Artifacts of Chaos, or Stellar Blade or even Lost in Random. And that's a *weird* one with its combat system. Fun, though.
At the end of the day though, if you enjoy it, that's the more important part of it.

Game's chock full of secrets man, i recently read there's about 90 bosses and many secrets around. For example, there's a boss fight in a cave in Chapter 2 with a weird wall. If you use the Wandering Wight's spirit headbonk attack on that wall, it opens a crack leading to a key item to use back in Chapter 1, which itself leads to a boss fight.
You can travel between chapters, though apparently around Chapter 3 there is something you can miss for that playthrough if you don't do a particular thing, and i don't remember what thing that is.
Another instance: in Chapter 2 you can collect these things called Buddha Eyes, and if you manage to avoid a particular stone boss and get to where the Buddha Eyes have to be inserted, it will summon *another* boss... and something special will happen when both bosses encounter one another.
Likewise, there's a 2v1 fight where, if you only kill the big guy with the mace, the other boss leaves, and so does your chance of a particular treasure/drop. So if you want that one, you'd have to kill the small one first and survive the enraged state of the big guy.
I guarantee you will be astounded by how much content there is. If you're not already astounded by what the characters say. There has been discontentment on the game's translation from the original Chinese language. Things like acting not fully matching up with the movement, or certain nuances and hints to these very secrets being lost.
Going back to the story: i figured you may have cut out the cutscenes for various parts, the tales here aren't as short, snappy or quickly digestible as, say, Def Jam: FFNY, God Hand and Urban Reign for example.
That last one especially was minimal on story, for 90% it's a textbox to give some context/excuse to what happens before a fight.
To each their own. Apologies if assumptions are rude, but to give my thoughts: You seem to be here for the gameplay first and foremost.
I'd be up for seeing your reactions to what happens in various scenes and fights: The intro fight with Erlang Shen for example.
It's the first fight of the game, so maybe for the viewer it can be nice too to see this first taste of proper gameplay. (and perhaps save up on editing time).
You did that a bit with the Wandering Wight: In the battle where you got really close, i didn't notice as many edits. You gave that one room to breathe, so to speak.
That was tense, a spectacle on its own. And hard-fought too! Like someone else in the comments says, congrats on beating that one so early in the game!
Also, "why can't you wear it around your neck like a normal person" in reference to that snake around the bump-headed boss' waist :P
That guy probably thought "if i'm going to have a pet, i may as well make it a functional one and wear it as a belt".
And i agree, the wolf boss' swipe-and-leap was *fantastic*
Very big comment on my end, multiple even. Thanks for reading it all through and wish you a lot of fun on the game going forward, be it on your own time or for a video.
    Have a good new week.

I think I get what you mean, I’m a bit conflicted in reference to videos because I feel like if I add story and a lot of fluff to make things make a lot of sense videos would be too long which makes editing longer & probably reduce the amount of people who would click to watch.
I think I aim to try and put what I find most interesting in along with gameplay otherwise if I added cutscenes the videos would be 25 maybe even 30 minutes

    • @jurtheorc8117
      @jurtheorc8117 Місяць тому

@@brandopolo2 I got ya. I actually thought there would be a bit less editing required if one leaves cutscenes as they are, compared to selecting the coolest parts of cutscenes.
But I don't know how editing works, though for the sake of wanting to learn how to make cartoons and animations, i probably should.
Either way: fair on wanting the stuff you find most interesting in it. It must be a tough balancing act in thinking about how to keep a video engaging. Some people are more exclusively gameplay-focused, others want to give the story its due too, and there's the algorithm and video length influencing how many people will watch to the end and stuff.
And shifting a focus could attract new people, but also make others less interested.
People can be fickle and picky creatures for sure.
And thank you for the replies to the comments as always. Take care, dude!

They had a game for PS1 too, right? I believe the engine that that game was on went on to be used for Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks (MK game that's more like an action/adventure).
And initially that combat system was developed for a PS1 four-way fighter/beat-em-up called Thrill Kill. Never *officially* released but people are resourceful in finding the code/copies.
There's quite a story to Thrill Kill's development and un-release. Seems like it had some interesting ideas, though was also quite grim and over-the-top.

You simply walking past the two wolf Yaoguai at around the start cracked me up like an egg on a steamroller highway.
I don't know how big you are into mythology, so if you are lost on the story: don't worry. As many have probably said, it's a story that takes place after the events of Journey to the West, one of three very big tales from Chinese culture and myth (the other ones being Water Margin, which is what the cartoon Hero: 108 was inspired by, and... the last one i forgot). Dragon Ball was inspired by this tale.
In essence: A Bhuddist monk, Tang Sanzang/Tang Monk, is sent to retrieve holy scriptures and is accompanied by a group of other characters that have committed crimes against Heaven:
    - Sun Wukong the Monkey King.
This dude's a walking cheatcode with stacked layers of immortality, powers such as using a cloud like a flying carpet, using a staff that can grow, shrink, lengthen and shorten at will (he keeps it behind/in his ear in its small state), pluckhis hair with every hair becoming a clone, use transformations/spells and some more.
He was trapped under a mountain for centuries after trying to defy Buddha on a dare: If he could jump out of Buddha's hand, he would be acknowledged as... supreme king of everything, or something to that effect.
So, Sun Wukong jumped to the edge of the universe... but the tips of Buddha's hand were still as far as they were initially. For Buddha is... enlightenment. Unity. Cosmic one-ness. There is no transcending everything that is already there.
    - Zhu Bhajie, "Pigsy"
a general of Heaven who was cast out after making inappropriate (sexual) advances on a particular goddess and made into a pig-headed man. He fights with a nine-toothed iron rake and also knows various transformations/spells, making him a formidable opponent... but he's also the most beholden to his vices.
It happens that he may deliberately sabotage the journey so he can stay for longer in a comfortable environment instead of risking danger again, for example. Dude's got the gluttony, lust and slothfulness.
Nevertheless... he's capable. And does grow.
    - Sha Wujing, "Sandy"
A monstrous water ogre who also belonged to Heaven but was cast out for... breaking a very valuable vase. Dude had to hide in a river to seek some sort of reprieve from part of his punishment (every day a flying sword would descend from Heaven and run him through, but it would not enter the water.)
He at one point killed various Bhuddist monks whose skulls kept floating in the water, which amused him, so he made a prayer bead necklace out of it.
He seemingly gets the least mention out of the companions but seems the most level-headed out of all of them. He doesn't know as many transformations/spells as Pigsy and Sun Wukong, and is not as powerful as them either. But... he pulls his weight. He's mature and does what needs to be done as best as he can.
Among Sandy's arsenal are also a gourd that can shrink and grow at will, which i once read he may use as a boat, and a staff-like weapon. Many depictions are of the staff as a Monk's Spade (look it up), but i recently learnt originally it was a staff decorated with strings of pearls and a golden core, that could --like Sun Wukong's staff-- shrink and grow at will
There was also a dragon that took the form of a horse.
Journey to the West is F U L L of various demons and monsters and events, from Tang Sanzang defying some demoness' advances on him by pure celibate discipline (or perhaps just being uninterested in romance and/or sex) to a temple being burnt down, to short-sighted or fair rulers alike, to instances of kidnapping, shapeshifting deceit and other hazards.
Many of the references may be lost to those that aren't as familiar with the original story. Same for me-- i never directly read a translation of JttW.
As it stands though-- it seems like a formidable game in terms of research, presentation, and just how *much* there is to the bosses.
(i'll leave a different comment besides this one, this one is big enough as is)

😂😂😂, like I said the aura made them not fight & damn, you really know your history! I wonder if there’s little descriptions of each boss after you beat them that’ll help people who are also interested in the lore. Wukong seems so cool though especially that dare you said he made with Buddha he’s a hilarious guy

      @jurtheorc8117 Місяць тому

@@brandopolo2 Exuding confidence can certainly have an effect on your environment! And thank you. Frankly i read up on the original Journey to the West tale again quite recently because of this game, and part of what i know comes from seeing people on the internet talk about it. I still try to take such informal sources with a grain of salt, though. Always check and compare sources.
From what i've seen there's quite extensive descriptions not just for the bosses but individual enemies too! For example, the bird man at the waterfall, the Crow Diviner.
The story of that one explains of a belief that crows who nested in temples or abbeys and such grew a spiritual connection, and some would try to read the future through these birds.
One man was a bit more sly than others: he developed a form of communication with one of the crows, using... i believe rods of different lengths, and used his crow as a spy to look at people and their behaviour.
Based on the bird's observations and the customer he had, this particular diviner would fabricate "prophecies" half-rooted in truth. He grew to have more crows too and made quite a lot of money through this practice.
Eventually important and powerful people came to him for the divinations too and the man made good coin of it-- but he did not want to push his luck and sought to change his career.
To do that, he had to get rid of the crows. And he tried various, various means of chasing them away, but the crows would not leave. That is, until they had enough of his mistreatment and pecked him to death.
After that, the crows started dressing up like the man and grew a humanoid shape.
The wording in the descriptions, and not just the spoken dialogues, can get quite long and flowery. And with some quotes, there may be nuance lost through translation and inflection. Or we have to read between the lines.
But yeah, for those interested, there's a lot to look into.
My man, Sun Wukong may be one of the most deservedly arrogant characters in all of mythology, and he's got the three-menu dessert of power and competence to back it up. He is cool for certain but could have easily ended up a villain too. Journey to the West serves in part as character development and redemption for the characters.
Wukong specifically was given a Buddha title (Victorious Fighting Buddha) for his skill, grown wisdom and enlightenment. Not *the* Buddha but still a title that places him among Heaven and the Gods. Perhaps even a slight bit beyond.
In this game, Wukong has renounced his presence among Heaven to just enjoy being on the mountain with his fellow monkeys. Yet... there is an overarching theme of how the Yaoguai (supernatural creatures), animals, humans etc. are unable to change their nature. Or perhaps not... that remains to be seen.
And in that, i suppose a theme of paranoia may be present as well.
This is why that army of Heaven attacks the mountain: They want Sun Wukong to be back in Heaven so they can keep an eye on him. They don't trust him enough to leave him to his own devices, fear that he will relapse to his old, more arrogant and destructive ways.
(Kind of like how King Louie XIV of France wanted all the nobility within the same castle. As long as he kept them distracted with petty social disputes and outlandish parties and such, they'd be too busy to try and conspire against him.)
If you ever find yourself interested in more Journey to the West media, there's the LEGO Monkie Kid series. Seems a really good series from what i know.
