We are Rich & Kathie, a retired couple building our dream home: A SUPER ENERGY EFFICIENT OFF GRID earth sheltered home in the Adirondacks!
The house will be covered with about 30" of soil which helps to maintain an internal temperature between 45 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit in winter & summer respectively. This means that in the winter we will only need minimal heat that we plan to provide with a small wood burning stove and we shouldn't need any air conditioning in the summer at all!
With inflation right now, the energy efficiency of this house is a HUGE Plus! But, it also means that we have a super tight budget that is getting tighter by the day. For this reason we DIY everything we reasonably can and find creative ways to save money such as repurposing.

Thanks for the tip. About to start on an old farm sink restoration after I get done building 3 more windows, 8 more nesting chairs for the grand kids, pouring 90'+ of concrete curb, and half of a 30'x60' slab. OH HELL I'm not sure when I will get to it! But you give me hope that I can do as much as you two.

Ummm. I speak from experience. Enamal spray paint will not stop moisture and rust formation eventually. However, there are professionals who will reporcelan. But the cost is only justified for antiques such as a claw foot deep bathtub. Which is what I had. They had to sandblast off the enamal paint first.
Now....can I say I admire you off grid? Yesterday a massive Douglas Fir tree went onto the power line going to my ranch. It appears so far all electronics are ok even though one phase wire on public power circuit breaker didn't trip. But, Because the termination power pole anchor was slant drilled underneath the house foundation the south east foundation corner rose about 3 inches. No foundation cracks or windows broke. I guess it will settle back in place eventually. 😢
