    Happy 2022~ I sorted all my seeds yesterday ✅ am ridding the house of clutter ✅ organized the garage ✅ mucked out the barn ✅ and excited to grow a perennial herb garden this year. 😃 All of my vacation days from work this year are going to be spent at home reclaiming now that all my children are over 20/grown adult women. For whatever the world brings to my front door, I will greet it with patience, honesty and a large cup of home grown tea. ☕️

    Hello Terry and Lol. Happiest of New Year to you both. So sorry you have been ill Terry it sounded like your throat might be still sore. Lovely to hear of your creative plans, Lol make sure we get to see what you do with & around the herb house, I’m in love with it. Terry soap making, basket weaving on top of your other things will keep you busy. Here it’s summer but a very mixed bag, hence vegetable seedlings struggling, but some great potatoes harvested for and after Christmas and more to come plus blueberries first harvest off two year old bushes and loads. It’s summers like this I wish I had room for a greenhouse even a small one, my cheap little poly house was shredded the first year and haven’t bothered as two covers in one season looked like yours. I think our gale winds love our garden. Covid has finally arrived in Tasmania a week after opening our border, so going from zero in over a year to cases rising rapidly now over 3000 supposedly new strain O, so pretty scary at the moment and plans to visit UK in May once again causing concern. We were so lucky for so long. Luckily our population here in Tas has very high vaccination rates but people still coming down with it. We’ve enjoyed having our youngest son and partner and our new two month old granddaughter visit over Christmas from Melbourne and middle son still here from Queensland, making for a wonderful Christmas time.
    So my plans for 2022 unlike you are on hold…..I will re commence making soap and start trying out other body products in Feb having stocked up with requisites. Try and Get back on line to undertake a garden course Charles Dowding I signed up for late last year. And try to dodge covid if possible.
    Stay safe over there in Ireland. Love from Tasmania

    Thanks for your video. I hope you are mending well after your recent bought of not feeling well. Winter is always a tough time of year and it isn't surprising, with less daylight and cold dreary weather, that folk wain a bit. I've been feeling it too and I'm always intuitively working on that herbal medicine level so I can try to help myself. Back in the late fall I fortunately found an excellent birch polypore growing on a large birch tree not far from my cabin door. I harvested that polypore (a bracket fungi), slivered it up, dried all of that and I'm using that medicine, combined with dandelion and burdock root, on a daily basis (3 cups per day) for a week at a time. Each week I switch up my herb tea. After drinking the polypore/root decoction for a week I infuse nettles, mullein, horehound, various mints, calendula blossom, chinese green tea, marjoram, lemon balm, ground ivy, roiboos and raspberry leaf (at times discluding several of those herbs with each infusion and sometimes including other herbs such as plantain, golden rod, cleavers, St. Johns Wort and Equisetum arvense, depending on what I am feeling that I need at the time). Here winter has been a pretty tough go so far. We have a mountain of snow on the ground and it has been cold, down to -16 Celcius (which is on the cold side for this mountain valley). Over the mountains (east) and up north, those folk have been experiencing real cold, down to -40 C. (and colder) for weeks on end now. With all the snow we have now, since mid-December, I worry about my wild deer friends as those poor creatures have a very hard time in this deep snow. Snow is waist deep now in most places in this valley at this lower elevation, deeper still as one goes up the mountain to the ten thousand foot level. There is a high avalanche risk now and people are being warned not to travel into the back country as the danger is extreme. Here in the Kootenays, I don't begin to plant my garden until April 1st in general. With this much snow (and more is forecast over the next two weeks) I am sure there will be snow until at least the beginning of April this year unless there is a real shift and things warm up a lot before then, but that is not too likely. Out on the west coast, 500 miles by road from here, they are having an unusually cold and brutal winter so far as well. It seems the weather is so unpredictable now with climate changing everywhere. Once March arrives I'll begin pruning the fruit trees (apples, pears, plums, cherries) that grow in my garden and around the yard. Once the snow is gone I'll be busy doing garden clean-up and cultivating for this years crop. I'm certainly glad, and fortunate, that my garden produces so much food for myself and others. I'm hearing that food prices in grocery stores have risen dramatically due to covid, shipping problems and crop failures (due to extreme weather events). I'm glad, and fortunate too, to have all these herbs that I cultivate and collect from nature during late spring and early summer for my own medicine. I've been moving so much snow in recent weeks that my old back is aching a bit and I miss the hot springs (covid has closed them down) that I used to visit weekly over the past forty years. The other day, after pushing mounds of snow to clear my usual paths, I put on my snowshoes and packed a trail around the cabin just to give myself a bit more area in the yard to walk on and to get to my satellite dish so I could brush the snow build-up away without wading through waist deep snow. I can't say I have a lot of fun anymore during winter (I used to ski a lot) as living alone keeps me indoors a lot more than in the old days. At this point I pretty much chop wood to keep the stove going, keep myself hydrated with water and herb teas, watch things on television and the internet, sleep more than normal, play music on my keyboard and accordion, cook myself some nourishing food once a day or so, and try to keep myself out of the doldrums. Being isolated and hardly seeing another person (for the past two years with covid restrictions) has taken its toll and I am feeling my age now more than ever. By St. Patrick's day I am feeling more hopeful as by then spring is never far off. Hopefully the remainder of this winter won't be too bad for everyone. Take care yourself, be well and best wishes with all your endeavours. Cheers!

      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  3 роки тому +1

      Wow - your weather is extreme compared to ours. We are as wet and green as ever here apart from a smattering of snow on the mountain tops. What a lot of work you have to do just to be able to get in and out and I can imagine how difficult it must be for deer. The weather is definitely changing but I don't think it is necessarily warming, getting hotter in some places and colder in others and I think it is due to land exploitation and mismanagement. I wish I could think of some way to relieve your isolation. Is there any way you could make music with people on line?? Is there a local community radio or something that could put people in touch with each other? I am not surprised that you feel isolated and that the isolation has taken its toll. Would you consider taking in a Wooffer or someone doing Work Away? I hope you have enough food to keep you going and hope your winter ends sooner rather than later. Sending you very best wishes for 2022 - good health and happiness!

      @@DanusIrishHerbGarden Thanks for your kind reply. Back in the years when I was a shepherd, with my goats, horses and dogs, I never felt alone. When I was divorced in 2008 everything changed. I sold my animals and went off to Australia for a while before returning here to this cabin. Prior to covid I got myself involved (for five years) in a monthly poetry slam event in the small city of Nelson which is a two hour drive from my small village. That monthly event connected me with a lot of other poets, writers and performers, which was a real blessing for me. Here in Argenta our community would have regular events that took place at the community hall but with covid that has all disappeared and people are pretty much keeping to themselves, although some have close friends and family that they still see regularly. I'm one of the old folk now and because of my shepherding I really had a very small friends list. Those people, mostly other men that I played music with on a weekly basis, are either dead now or have moved away. Such is life. Once spring arrives and I can get out to work in my yard and garden things lighten up a lot for me. My last dog died back in April 2014 so since then I've been completely alone, but I'm pretty used to being alone so I cope fairly well. I do miss that connection with those other poets and writers which I would see in Nelson once a month and I certainly miss that weekly visit to the local hot springs. Once I have my booster shot, in about 2 1/2 weeks from now, I am hoping I can get back to soaking in the hot springs as they are now allowing vaccinated people to reserve a visit, but I remain unsure of being close to people even if they are vaccinated. I guess covid has changed the world forever. Hopefully we'll all see some recovery in the next year or so. With the weather it seems to me the real problem is the warming oceans, which in turn create these significant and disastrous weather events we are seeing all around the planet. With so many glaciers quickly melting, as well as the Greenland icefields and the Antarctic icecap, all that fresh water spilling into the oceans is a huge problem. I think our planet is in great peril at this point in time and all we can do is try to live our lives in a healthy, respectful and caring way. Let's hope things will turn around and our world will recover from all these ailments. I'm glad I'm here and I'm glad I have chosen this life style. Take care yourself and I hope you enjoy the remainder of your winter. Cheers!

Last year I was able to raise Hopi Pale Grey Squash and save the seed it was almost extinct a few years back. It’s has a lovely orange flesh. We make pie with it that is better than pumpkin. Do you check your pantry to determine what will need replenished for the year that’s our big drive here for choosing what to plant. Happy Planning!

      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  3 роки тому +1

      That is great - that you have saved seeds from something becoming extinct. I remember seeing an old American man on a documentary who was saving heirloom seeds. He was concerned that when he died God would say, what happened to the 54 varieties of beets I gave you, and the hundreds of varieties of peas and the 97 varieties of beans (just making up those figures cos I can't remember now ) and he said he wanted to show gratitude. That has always inspired me to use heirloom seeds. I am going to try and find ways of preserving food beyond freezing.

      I'm so pleased that more and more people are taking the saving of heirlooms seriously. Years ago a local organic farmer introduced us to heirloom varieties of potatoes, tomatoes, beans, and greens. Our favorite collards he called Greasy Greens. But, were could but find a source for seeds. This Christmas my daughter gave me a packet of seeds that she found from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. They are called Green Glaze organic collards. It's one of my favorite gifts this year. We can hardly wait to show these seeds.

      Kara, it can be done. I have been vegetarian for fifty years (I was about 13) and vegan for about 35. My husband and I have been together 42 years. We've come up with favorite recipes that either have no meat, or he can add meat to his own. His choice. But, spaghetti and a pot chili are his own recipes, and after several years, he stopped adding meat to his own. Soups can be easy, such as potato, which I add vegan milk (soy is my favorite) and vegan butter to thicken, and many hearty bean and lentil soups. Curry with sweet potato and red lentils on rice is another. Good luck experimenting.

    Happy 2022 to you and yours. Glad to hear you healed well and are feeling better now. Our holidays were off due to my mom being in the hospitals from before Thanksgiving until she passed on Dec. 5th. She had not been well for several years and had succumb to viral pneumonia. My plans include continuing to add to our herb gardens, culinary as well as medicinal, and t do better with my succession planting of certain vegetables, so we can reap a more bountiful harvest for longer periods of time. I'm also going to work on getting hot beds made in our Autumn so we can harvest greens well into the first part of January. I'm also working on making those hot beds covered with a heavier row cover to keep them going longer when it becomes subzero. We live in Montana, USA and are now into our subzero temps for winter into mid-February. With windchill just days ago it was -38F and now two days later we're in the low 30'sF above, it's crazy weather I know. Looking forward to your vlogs in 2022

    • @DanusIrishHerbGarden
      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  3 роки тому

      Wow - that is crazy weather! Hot beds sound like a brilliant idea - especially for Montana! I also think that is a great idea of successional planting - I mean to do it and then there is so much to harvest I forget! But will be more organised this year😃

    Beautiful video Terri and Happy New Year! I literally couldn’t wait to hear your voice again! My family and I are very poorly this week, not been tested but feeling like the worst bout of flu we’ve ever had and wiped of all energy. Day 8 for me with no sign of improvement. I’m afraid I’ve gone into a little bit of fear so you video was so welcome today. I want to learn all about herbal remedies this coming year. X

    • @DanusIrishHerbGarden
      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  3 роки тому +1

      Please don't have any fear. WE were all ill to varying degrees - I was worse with about 12 days or more of zero energy and thought there was no end in sight but there was of course. We didn't bother with tests so we don't know what it was other than a winter bug. Knowing its name would not have made any difference. Thankfully I had a lot of herbal medicine on hand and now I will be stronger than ever with a natural immunity. So just be patient with yourself and have lots of rest and lots of garlic, honey, herbal teas!

    One of the things I also enjoy is going through the seeds and making plans for the spring. 🙂 For many years I've kept the seeds in the fridge or out in the garage where it's cold. Even if I've had them a few years, I just plant them closer.☺️
    I'm glad you're feeling better. Sometimes I feel like that's the way our bodies say 'time for a break.'

    What are we planning for our 2022 garden? Well, living in Wisconsin, USA, where we aren't totally free of snow until late April and the last frost isn't until mid-May, whatever we plant has a short growing season. A variety of squashes are planned, string beans, carrots, beets, various herbs. We may even try potatoes in bags of dirt.

    Happy New Year Terri.
    I'm looking forward to the course.
    As for my plans - more raised beds, more soft fruit bushes and more medicinal herbs. I really want to expand my herbal medicines cabinet.
    I'm also planting more shrubs to make up for all the hedging my farmer neighbour ripped out in the last week. We're talking good 30 metres of them lost in few days. All the poor birds that were sheltering there come to my garden now but that's already full of birdies so I want to do what I can for them. I'm sorry you were feeling ill glad you're OK now. When I have a project to look forward to, it helps me get out of bed in the morning! I look forward to your crafty projects. Do you ever make garden structures from branches? I would like to but find it hard to find branches, lots of conifer forests around but it's not public land. Our trees are mostly very small yet. This summer I'd like to build some arbors from lumber, if anything to show my husband we can make them ourselves. I lost my tiny Wilko green house in storm Arwen, I had it weighted down with huge rocks I could barely move, nope, right over! We really need a proper tunnel or green house!
    I forgot to say I have wildflower seeds that I'll be sprinkling all around the new fruit trees we just planted, because there's no grass there now. Lots of poppy seeds and foxglove too!

    • @DanusIrishHerbGarden
      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  3 роки тому +1

      Nasturtiums are great around trees too - they benefit the tree and repel pests. Those pesky winds won't be stopped by rocks will they! I love the idea of natural sculptures but our trees are still too young and do not have enough girth on the branches...but one day! Happy New Year!

    Sorry to hear you were ill. Sounds like you are raring to go as far as plans. As for me I do plan on expanding my medicinal herb garden. Then concentrate on just a few of my favorites as far as vegetables. And canning those .

      I'm on the mend now thank you. Lovely to plan to expand your medicinal herb garden - me too. I would also like to try canning - it is not something that is done here but makes a lot of sense. Happy New Year!

      It probably seems like welcome heat to all the people in North America and Canada who are still under ice and and snow. So interesting to hear of all the climactic differences . Hope you are well Florence. xx

    Happy New Year 🥳, missed your videos , I wasn’t notified, I’ve fixed that and look forward to the upcoming videos . I must let you know I’ve made the laundry liquid and the lemon balm tincture- both incredibly easy and THANK YOU for showing and sharing- the tincture is now used daily and I’ve shared the laundry liquid with two ladies i know and they love it too, such a wonderful method and it cleans beautifully
