I also bought one of these to go along with my DX Commander mast. I have been using them both to build antennas for my channel and working POTA. Thanks for the demonstration. 73s
It’s ok but not great. I may look for something else. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for showing off that interesting and inexpensive pole, Chris! That setup is a great way for a newcomer or a cash-strapped ham to get on the air. 73 from VE3TWM.
Definitely inexpensive!
RG-316 is your friend for these lightweight poles. Even just a 10 foot length is good so your heavier coax can connect to a thicker at a thicker part of the pole. Additionally an inverted vee configuration helps to straighten out the pole as the two legs of the wire act a bit like guys. This works best with an end fed of some sort where the transformer is at the ground but with enough support even a center fed dipole can work.
Thanks! I might try not going for the very end of the pole next time.
Chris, Great review. I have a Shakespeare also and was looking for the 10m Goture mast as a backup. But they stopped making them. I enjoy watching your videos. Always pick up a few good tips or ideas. 73 George KB3WAQ from Reading Pa.
Thanks George! So glad the videos are helping you!
Light poles like this make very effective portable verticals as well.
an efhw with the 49:1 on the ground probably would work great if the wire was thin enough
Good video Chris and a nice lightweight portable antenna setup. Have you thought of trying RG174 coax would help as its very light and would not bend the pole as much. The PVC pipe is a great idea to support a mast. All the best and keep up the good work. 73 Chris M0RSF
Hey Chris! Yeah, I think lighter coax is next on the list!
Beautiful!
Hi Chris, I have another model of the same brand and usually only use it with my end fed antennas they handle those really well. For my Linl dipole like you said I use the Sotabeams mast just because of the weight. Thanks for the review!
I think the overall diameter of this one is the weak point. But, if I’m careful it should hold up
Hey Chris! I use the goture 7.2m pole to hold up 1/4 wave verticals or shorter random wire antennas. I use plastic lids to hold the wires, the pole works best with the least amount of weight suspended. The goldline super hard seems to flex less than the other models. It is the black one.
Yeah, I think the rg8x is too heavy for it. It’s not a bad pole but definitely not a sotabeams pole. Thanks for watching!
Great operations
Thats a great torture test nice antenna
Good review, Chris. It's helpful to see the bend/flex with RG8X. I have SOTABEAMS and MFJ masts and use RG174 or RG316 if I'm putting up a dipole. I'm sure there's a little more loss, but it shouldn't be too bad for just 25' coax. I've been thinking of the Goture masts for a while though.
Yes, I should change out my coax for something lighter for multiple reasons! I just happened to come across the Goture and it seems to be ok. Time will tell that’s for sure!
Thanks for the video! Did I miss you saying how long your pole is? Is it made of carbon fiber or fiberglass?
I forgot to mention it. The website says it’s bamboo, but it looks like fiberglass to me. It’s also 20 feet.
the dx commander pole is the best
It’s sturdy but also bulky and unreasonably heavy for real portable use. I wouldn’t want to climb a peak carrying one of those.
