DIY: How To Replace A Front Wheel Bearing On An E9x XDrive BMW

  • WARNING: do not use hammer to remove axle, instead, use a punch tool / round chisel and insert into the dimple in hub. Then hammer on that. Hammering the hub will make the threads unusable.

    Welcome back everyone,
    In this video, I replace the front wheel bearing on my E92 XDrive BMW. This process took a while, and requires a good set of tools and preferably, an impact wrench. Depending on how much rust your car has, this job may or may not be a pain to perform. If you are prepared and organized, this job is not as bad as it seems. The procedure in this video is as detailed as I could make it. It is also highly recommended to replace the nuts and bolts coming off of the suspension components (Strut mount, sway bar link, tension strut, lower control arm, and tie rod) with brand new ones.
    Parts Needed:
    OEM Wheel bearing
    New circlip
    New axle nut
    New hardware and fasteners (nuts and bolts for suspension parts)
    Tools Needed:
    12 point, 36 mm socket- Axle nut
    18 mm socket - Strut mount bolt
    17 mm socket- Lugnuts
    16 mm socket- Caliper mounting bolts, sway bar link nut
    10 mm socket- Dust shield bolts
    24 mm socket (or wrench)- Tension strut nut, tie rod nut, lower control arm nut
    7 mm hex nut socket- Brake rotor
    5 mm hex nut socket- Wheel speed sensor
    17 mm wrench- Sway bar link inner nut
    18 mm wrench- Strut mount nut
    Torque Specs:
    Tie rod- 59 ft-lb
    Tension strut- 122 ft-lb
    Lower control arm- 74 ft-lb
    Sway bar link- 42 ft-lb
    Strut to knuckle 60 ft-lb
    Axle nut- 310 ft-lb

      No I did not. However I would warn against hammering the axle like I did. Use a punch instead on the little indent to prevent mushrooming the threads.

    Yep, just doing everything as so... But I got a headache for hammering down the bearing, I only managed to get half of it out, I'll continue tomorrow. If you don't have a real press... It's a lot of hammering, but it's coming out eventually

      I managed to replace the front bearings, I also replaced the shock absorbers travel range bushings... Anyway, still sounds like an airplane... I'm about to do the rear bearings but I'm afraid that still won't fix my noise... I think it comes from the rear differential... Any thoughts on it?

      @@RomanTrollanski I've heard that sometimes replacing the diff fluid solves that, i think it is louder at some speeds ive seen around 45-55 is loudest. Im no professional just saying what ive seen in some forums 😅

      Thanks! It's not as bad as it looks.. if you don't have seized mating surfaces like I did. A lot of hammering was done off camera

    Hitting that axle end with a hammer is not pleasant to see.
    Use a punch. And hit the that axle groove in the middle.

      Yes for sure next time if I do this I’ll use a punch.

    Don’t torque your parts untill the vehicle is on the ground with the weight on them.

    do you have to re-align wheels after this?

      Yes, if you can, it is best to get an alignment after disassembling any suspension components. If you do not disassemble any suspension components, an alignment will not be required (ie. removing the bearing while attached to the axle and all other parts)

    Get metric if you own a BMW
    You could've just bought a puller and a bearing press kit for what you have paid the shop to do.

      Yes I could have but I don’t have the space to store one nor do I have an immediate need for one, aside from this job. If the need arises, I will buy one.

    Can I ask you about the grease for the bearing splines and axle splines ? You suggested that both surfaces be coated in order to make the connection easier / smooth. Q. What kind of grease does it require ?

      Use some anti-seize lubricant. Watch out as it's really messy when you touch it but it'll make your assembly a bit easier plus you will thank yourself later when you gonna remove it once again in the future. Just don't put too much of it, smear it on the splines and even the thread, don't dip it in that lol

      Hey, I used FCP Euro. You can put your exact car specs in there and check it out. For the replacement nuts, I used realoem and put my VIN in there. It gave me the exact part numbers and I went to the dealership and they got my parts ordered in quickly.
