Very knowledgeable entrepreneur, excellent communication and very insightful. Wish him all the best and by the way great interview questions. Made my day.Thank you..
I've been using a laundromat 1x per week for the last 8 years. I rent a room in a home w/ washer and dryer. The logistics - figuring out who's doing what w/ the machines, plus mechanical break downs left me frustrated. I solved all problems laundry by using a laundromat. I get a week's worth of laundry done, grocery shopping, mail pick up at my post office box, my nails done, visit the library, get my taxes done (the laundromat's in a neighborhood shopping center) in under four hours for under $20. It's nice to say I'm not stepping on machine user toes, or personal items here at home -- period. Love the laundromat.
DELAYED GRATIFICATION! This gentleman HAD to develop a plan and he knew he had to learn multiple skills in order to complete his dream. People these days “fake it” but never “make it” because they spend what they earn instead of reinvesting while keeping their long term goals in mind. Would love to hug 🤗 this guy!
Exactly. I see that all the time, too. But it always seemed like gambling. Sure, sometimes things work out great, but more often, they fail. This guy had rock solid advice.
Excellent business model! Laundromat for each member of your family. One never realizes how much sacrifice, effort, hard work, and financing that goes into opening and running a business. They just see that someone is making money. Profit comes years after the business is running hopefully. We should all appreciate the small mom and pop business in the respective communities.
being a cog in the machine that does not even know what day of the year it is? Sounds like a pretty great American dream. Piece of trash probably does not even go to church 3+ times a week. He would not even be considered human in the Bible Belt.
I run a service business in the creative industry and gotta say this was awesome. I learned a lot of tips on how to serve better. I really enjoy watching people who put pride and innovation into their business and care about who they are serving. So many businesses shouldn't be in business. Customer service is at an all time low and it's a money grab everywhere. This was refreshing to see an operator so passionate about his biz.
One of the most interesting businessmen on this platform. I enjoyed listening to him; he was very open and knowledgeable about the business. I loved his enthusiasm and passion for the laundry business. Great interview!
This is the kind of guy you wanna work with! He's got clear cut objectives! He knows what he wants and truly has what it takes to become a successful entrepreneur. Not your typical armchair boss😅 And I admire his forward-thinking approach to this type of business. He really understands innovation - and competition. It's really hard to relax when each day you see there's an improvement elsewhere. You really have to keep up or one-up the competition.
His gross revenue per employee is $45k/yr. Why do you want to work for anyone what attempts to pay you, AND operate a business, and starts with $45k? Describe how YOU can make $35k/yr from that revenue stream?
I'm obessessed with the laundry business. What's wrong with that? You're good at something, you serve your community and you are providing for your family and employees that is not a bad life right there.
FORGET THE LAUNDRYMAT, DAVE IS WHATS RIGHT ABOUT THIS WORLD, AND HIS WIFE CARLA AS WELL. THANK YOU. FOR SHOWING THE WORLD THAT LIVING FROM THE HEART, KINDNESS AND BEING THERE FOR PEOPLE NEEDS TO BE THE MODEL FOR THE FUTURE. HAPPY HOLIDAYS !
On a smaller scale, I have installed many automatic laundry, chemical injection systems in laundry mats. The owners would have one or two of their 60 pounders set aside for wash dry fold used by their attendant. It’s awesome to see this laundramat! Awesome video!
I had to laugh when you said laundry service didn’t exist 10-15 years ago. I’m 68 and my Grandmothers did not do laundry. They didn’t even own washing machines. Everything except underwear, which they hand washed, went to the local laundress. Growing up, my Mother sent all shirts and bed linens to the laundry. I still remember her being asked what level of starch she wanted in the shirts and if she wanted them folded or on hangers. I think the big change came with permanent press fabrics because doing the laundry required ironing, which took a lot of time. Once you could just hang things up from the dryer and have them look OK, I think more people started doing all their laundry at home. I actually use the laundromat occasionally, mostly for large things like quilts and pillows, but have fond memories of the laundry being delivered and suddenly having a closet full of clean shirts and crisp cotton linens on my bed.
This is a well planned out laudromat business. Adding the PICKUP and DELIVERY services is what's making his business successful. And now including a course and "advertising" on Upflip, this guy is not dumb. It shows that college isn't for everyone, or even necessary in certain cases. If existing low profit laundromats added this service, this gentleman wouldn't be buying their business out. Try to even contract out the pickup and delivery service to a local so you don't have to buy vans, drivers, and insurance - the contractor uses their own vehicle. All the contractor does is bring the clothes to your facility and delivers them back to the customer. Tip: Instead of hiring full-time employees to wash clothes, use a couple of temp agencies and have temp employees on a long-term basis - there's no overhead for you, the owner. You're welcome. 🎉
you have some very good ideas business wise only part im not fully on is the temp thing because in this day and age you want good people to get paid good salaries as well and temps typically get the short end of the stick work wise...in my opinion
Temp agencies don't gurantee employment attendance all the time and that would be a risk for him and he didnt become successful doing things day in and day out. Poor suggestion there bud.
It would be interesting to know how they mitigate issues with pests, etc that come in on people's dirty laundry such as: lice, bedbugs etc. Great video! This guy is smart.
This is exactly why i want my own laundry mat business but i want mine in many dormatory colleges and apartment complexes and hospitals and a vending machine business
When in the biz I used to let the counter staff do wash dry fold as their own enterprise and profit center. I wanted nothing to do with drop off because the machines did plenty. I had next to zero turnover in staff.
The one thing I took away from this is that you don't need to be in tech or have the newest idea to be an entrepreneur. You can take what worked previously, see how people are failing at doing it, improve it and modernize it in the process to get the business going. Of course, the amount of effort and time that the owner spent in this is insane and I'm just now realizing that maybe if you have a good high paying job (surgeons, data analysts, senior developers, airplane captains, etc.) then it might be not the best to go for a business and just stay on the job long term, less hassle and more free time that way since you don't have to be on call 24/7 in case something breaks or needs crew. But it's still very tempting to see whether you have enough capital to go for a business and build it from the ground up, there's just something there tempting you to go for it and I think that the rewards can be great but sometimes the cost of it (less time with family and leisure) can be much more costly than you think it is.
But you’re missing the most important piece of it all. He now works 2 hours a week and probably makes 10x his old salary. Plus he will sell his laundromat business for millions one day. You will never get to reap any of those benefits with regular jobs, no matter how hard or long you work
As a single mother to a college student while advancing my college degree, I’ve been stung by the entrepreneurial bug. I have money saved and I’ve just now been given the motivation to do research on this industry. Time to dive in.
The Hydro equipment not only saves the customer a trip to the store for product they have to lug along with their laundry, it’ll save the operator in dumpster waste costs. Trash receptacles on the floor need to be emptied less, saving on trash bag costs and increasing labor efficiencies. Lots of time/cost savings for the facility and the customer!
We used a laundromat when our dryer died and we were not ready to fix or buy a new one. We used to call our laundry day as date night. It gave us the time to sit and talk while the laundry was washing and drying.
That's awesome... And a solid idea actually! 💡 Imagine if Dave created a little "date night" vibe in his laundromats, comfy seating, maybe a even some board games.
This guy would be successful in any business. Good personality great attitude and work ethics and hunger for knowledge...definitely shark tank material. All the best
One thing I love about Americans is they seem very open and willing to give business advice. Where I live it's the opposite and those doing well guard it like a state secret.
As an American, I agree. Most small business owners do have a “there’s enough room for all of us” mindset as long as the new entrepreneur has good intentions and isn’t trying to poach customers. I think it is also a culture that takes pride in the practice of mentorship. A lot of Americans really like being in a position to give advice and nurture new talent. It is seen as a very good thing to help others become successful with your guidance and experience. My high school and my college even had programs for upperclassmen to be assigned to mentor new students. Sharing your knowledge generously is very encouraged in American culture.
I have owned a bunch back in the day and a good experience plus all cash and no receivables. Among the biggest problems in the biz are equipment distributors pushing turn key stores instead of just selling machines. This means if you have a good business they will be eyeballing your market. So make sure the area has limited utility or land possibilities for a new store which will poach customers.
I worked with a guy who had taken over maintenance on a laundry mat . The previous maintenance guy did a minimal job . One problem was socks and underwear etc.... stopping up the pumps and creating service calls. My buddy order shields to help keep this from being a problem . He methodically went through each and every machine that wasn't running and the others as they had a problem. I learned a lot , This was back in the mid-80's
I'm wildly impressed. Dave is doing an amazing job and that facility looks phenomenal. Top-tier choices from the ground up, he and his family deserve all kinds of kudos for their sacrifices and persistence.
He right about optimization. I go to the laundry mat I do because I can add extra wash and rinse cycles... for more money of course. I watched this just because I thought it might be interesting. It never ceases to amaze me how someone's love for what they do can make almost anything interesting.
Great job! We need more people like you to help the community, instead of just making huge profits for ourselves, being selfish. Let’s continue to build America, so we can all at least live a more comfortable life, we deserve.
Stumbled across this today. Very nicely done not only on interviewer and viewee. I’ll be watching more. Btw- many interviews are so difficult because of acoustics. Acoustics on this are phenomenal. Truly.
Very good video! Owning a business is not for the faint of heart but is so rewarding. As to why some people would use a laundromat in this day and age, it varies. I knew a lady who lived in a shared laundry building and would spent 5 dollars to bleach and sanitize the machines before she would wash her clothes (due to the hygiene of some other tenants)so a super clean business like this would have gotten all of her business!
You’re absolutely right-owning a business requires a lot of courage and dedication, but it can be incredibly rewarding. Thanks for sharing this insight! 🙏

I’ve listened to many entrepreneurs and so-called gurus of business but this is the one conversation that reignited my dream of opening my business. ❤❤❤
Makes since, I would provide a service to pick up customers to do their laundry, something like Uber, Lyft, since I would have my own vehicles for pick up and drop off services. Cant wait to get started creating jobs...
I can’t wash downstairs in my building I saw a tenant wash a blanket with lumps of dog poop on it and our dryers are filled with dog hair, where I go is a laundromat that is so clean and well maintained ,I am an extremely clean person
If you’re dealing with issues at your building, maybe bringing it up with the management could help address these concerns. Thanks for sharing your experience! 🙏
That's awful...some laundromats say on the door NO Pet blanket in our machines....however; I have an idea IF you have enough machines one of them should exclusively be for pet blankets then again...some people simply don't read and probably won't put it in that particular machine....they would need to be supervised which is a chore...anyhow I too prefer the availability of machines so I can wash my comforters and bed sheets while I do my regular clothes.
Very inspiring. I'm 60 and still working and this got me thinking. Anyway, Im not a fan of others doing my laundry. If i drop something on the floor, it goes into the dirty pile. I never let sheets or towels touch the floor when folding. Ive seen people folding sheets with one end on the floor and over their feet. 🤢 I doubt any laundromat employee is this conscience.

As a young mother, she watched me working , studying at nights, looking after my family of two very young kids, working a corporate job at 60 hr week, no OT because I worked in accounting…they didn’t pay OT…she was very worried about me and asked me to slow down. I looked at her and said you never slowed down when you were my age …what’s your concern? She said I worked harder than her. She knew I only slept on average 4-5 hrs max per day, and that is very bad she said. Fast forward many years , I am reaping the fruits of my labour. Now…I see my adult children working very hard to create their own wealth. Children learn how to sacrifice when they witness their parents build something for the family. They can’t marry lazy spouses …they know it will kill the marriage . Love never overcomes these traits, it’s a battle you don’t want on a daily basis. It breaks your spirits. Then one day you will believe it is possible because you also made the sacrifices to have less bling and more money saved. I honour my parents and grandparents by ensuring my children replicate all I was taught. It’s not easy when their friends don’t do it …but they have courage and say No when it’s distracting them from their ultra goals. They got their priorities right. Loved the laundromat lots of childhood memories. Drinking the coffee with powered milk and sugar along with selecting a VHS movie to watch on the provided 13inch tv.
It really is a great feeling to, even if you're the type to just get get a few coats dry cleaned a year, to have "your guy" for something, shoe repair, knowing good movers, all sorts of things like that -- knowing a place you can recommend to other people and feel like it reflects well on you -- _that_ aspect is the "throwback" in modern business, and he nails it on the head about building relationships. Anyone can find a laundromat, but even if you have your own w/d, knowing a place you can have everyone's laundry picked up and delivered after you have 15 people over for thanksgiving and they head home with in warm clean clothes and the rest all professionally packed up, it's something people remember.

You can do it. Just start saving for the location building, equipment, material; build up your credit for an SBA loan for the rest and you are on your way to own your laundromat.
The speed of using these large machines & and the crappy home machine options make this very tempting!
That first laundromat!! I spent a lot of time there as a kid. Glad to see you saved it. I no longer live in Ohio, but when I come back to visit imma stop by!
This might have been the longest video I've watched while being completely engaged. You had me the whole time. I couldn't believe all the good info the video was dishing out for free. Kudos to your guest. I'm so very impressed with the smarts and willingness to mentor and inspire.
Thank you for your kind words! Our guest truly brought some valuable insights to the table! 🙏
This video came across to my feed and I clicked by chance this morning. It has been the most engaging video I have seen lately by far.
Not bad for $1,040/year
I had my clothes stolen if I left them at the laundry so I never felt comfortable after that to leave them.
Most aren't optimised to such a scale so are losing from parasites
You can tell this guy has really done his homework and put the work in. Great episode
Dave comes across as such a genuine , cordial, and well adjusted guy. Great business operator and civically minded man!
Thanks for noticing! We’re lucky to have him! 🙏
I work hard at my job but nothing like forgetting it's Christmas. You so earned where you are. I teared up hearing that.
Appreciate the support! 🙏
being a cog in the machine that does not even know what day of the year it is?
Dave Menz here. Thank you so much! 😁
This is the kind of guy you wanna work with! He's got clear cut objectives! He knows what he wants and truly has what it takes to become a successful entrepreneur. Not your typical armchair boss😅
And I admire his forward-thinking approach to this type of business. He really understands innovation - and competition. It's really hard to relax when each day you see there's an improvement elsewhere. You really have to keep up or one-up the competition.
Absolutely! Real hustle and forward-thinking at its best! 💪
Thank you so much. Very kind of you!
His gross revenue per employee is $45k/yr. Why do you want to work for anyone what attempts to pay you, AND operate a business, and starts with $45k? Describe how YOU can make $35k/yr from that revenue stream?
I live about 15 minutes from Queen City and had no idea this guy was there with this amazing laundromat! His 4 locations look awesome!
It's always exciting to discover hidden gems in your own backyard! Glad you enjoyed the video! 🔥
The cleanest laundromat I’ve ever seen!😮🎉
not a customer in sight!
It's great to see that added a play area for children! Thoughtful!!!
I'm obessessed with the laundry business. What's wrong with that? You're good at something, you serve your community and you are providing for your family and employees that is not a bad life right there.
Calgon Ancient Chinese secret commercial from the 1970s comes to mind.
Thank you, Mr. Menz. Godspeed; health, abundance, prosperity, happiness, FUN - don't forget the Fun with your family...
Thank you 🙏
On a smaller scale, I have installed many automatic laundry, chemical injection systems in laundry mats.
I'm 42yrs old and have been going to the laundromat with my mom since I was 9 here in NYC 🙏🏾💯💯💯💯
Also just like UBER delivers food, medications and offers other types of delivery it wouldn’t be hard to have them deliver laundry too
Dave Menz here, just wanted to say thanks for the kind words. Doing the show was a lot of fun.
@@LaundromatMillionaireHi Dave , thanks for doing the video! Are you in any other areas of business or just laundromats ?
Temp agencies don't gurantee employment attendance all the time and that would be a risk for him and he didnt become successful doing things day in and day out. Poor suggestion there bud.
Its good to see people that take a chance, work really hard, work smart and it pays off!
Glad you enjoyed the show. It's never too late to impact our communities. ❤️
It would be interesting to know how they mitigate issues with pests, etc that come in on people's dirty laundry such as: lice, bedbugs etc. Great video! This guy is smart.
Great point! They usually have protocols in place for thorough cleaning and regular inspections to tackle problems like lice and bedbugs.
The bugs do not survive cleaning.
@@MarkH10 Of course not, but the bugs can spread to workers clothing, etc.
This is why I always used hot water and like you should anyway to avoid mold, mildew and sticky laundry I made sure my clothes dried all the way
This is exactly why i want my own laundry mat business but i want mine in many dormatory colleges and apartment complexes and hospitals and a vending machine business
You will never get to reap any of those benefits with regular jobs, no matter how hard or long you work
I live 10 minutes from 2 of his spots they are top notch.
Appreciate you sharing that! It's always nice to hear from someone nearby who knows the local gems.
Absolutely! The Hydro equipment is a win-win!
Absolutely! Thanks for the awesome comment 🙏
Dave and Karla are killing it in Cincinnati!!! Great interview!!
Appreciate you brother. 😁
This guy employs 40 people! That's amazing. 👍
One thing I love about Americans is they seem very open and willing to give business advice. Where I live it's the opposite and those doing well guard it like a state secret.
the culture, here's capitalist pro-business but is a weapon to make more money too like franchise etc..
Love this guy and his mindset on serving the community. Very valuable info.
Dave's mindset on serving the community is amazing, and the info he’s dropping is gold. Really valuable stuff! 💪
Thank you! 🙏
I learned a lot ,
This was back in the mid-80's
"Enough is enough, no more side hustle, I got a job." This can be heard two different ways; either way is right.
You are a wise man.
It's amazing to witness people taking a chance, working really hard, and working smart, and seeing it pay off!
Watching people take risks and thrive is a reminder of what dedication and perseverance can achieve. 🙌
Describe factually the payoff you see available in this story.
I'm wildly impressed. Dave is doing an amazing job and that facility looks phenomenal. Top-tier choices from the ground up, he and his family deserve all kinds of kudos for their sacrifices and persistence.
Thank you for your kind words! Dave truly deserves all the accolades for his dedication and effort. It means a lot to see others appreciate it too! 🙏
Amen 🙏
Mad respect to this man. Ain’t no success without sacrifice, but it’s worth it.
Stumbled across this today. Very nicely done not only on interviewer and viewee. I’ll be watching more.
Btw- many interviews are so difficult because of acoustics. Acoustics on this are phenomenal. Truly.
May i add: with the price of home ownership skyrocketing and more people finding them selves going mobile lifestyle laundromats are a necessity
This is fantastic information. I feel like I'm drinking from a firehouse and I'm only about 18 minutes into the video. Laundry is an industry I've been considering and so far this has been AMAZING information.
The laundry industry has a lot to offer, and it’s great to hear that you’re getting valuable insights from the video. 🔥
wow this guy is the real deal - love how clear & articulate he is about how he runs his business & the strategies he has used over time - he is so transparent!
It’s refreshing to see someone so genuine and open about their business journey. Thanks for watching! ☺️
my dad worked over 12 hour days with his small business. he was very successful. I admire him greatly for all the sacrifices he made. he sacrificed himself for his family, best dad ever!
The Christmas story touched me. I have been on autopilot from working hard and got up to dress and go to work on a day off. Even started to drive in. Got the guilt feeling calling in when you are so sick thowing up you are wearing a path to yhe bathroom. Send him and his family a big hug.
Omg!!! I love this. I just thought of the idea of a kids space in a laundry mat. This is awesome 🎉
Kids spaces are very popular in modernized laundromats. Glad you liked the show. 😁
What a cool testimony of how serving people includes not only your staff, but your community, your vendors, and your suppliers. Thank you for sharing that encouragement!
I used to maintain these places. They can be legitimate businesses in the right area with newer equipment that don't shit the bed and eat any profits.
Did you notice $1.8m divided by 40 employees. Average per head is $45k/yr. This is no business at all.
@@MarkH10wasn't it $1.8 million per store?
4 x $1.8 = $7.2 million.
And what makes you think they are all getting an equal part of the $7.2 million?

Wow, you are brilliant, you do not need an MBA, you already have one by experience.
His experience speaks volumes and often provides practical knowledge that’s just as valuable as any formal education. His hands-on learning is truly impressive! 🫡
This guy is genuine & brilliant.
Since what?
Wonderful interview! "Money magnifies what you already have" Love that! ❤
I doubt any laundromat employee is this conscience.
Great story and business. My concern is picking up laundry and not knowing if they have roaches, or bedbugs, or both😮.
The heat from the dryers kills most critters.
Fun fact: Dolly Parton met her husband in a laundromat.
Never heard that before but super cool!

When I read your comments …it reminded me of my mother. She toiled soooo hard, I learnt work ethics from her.
My grandfather was an immigrant who didn’t speak English when he arrived…. He said, You have to outwork your peers as a girl of immigrants as well as be wise about money. Diamonds are not a girl’s best friend ….. nope ! Wealth in cold cash is along with great family relationships and few solid friends who have your back! LOL

That is so true. There is zero to be cynical about with this guy. He truly creates an atmosphere where everybody wins

Their dedication is a powerful reminder of the impact hard work can have on creating a stable and successful future. 🙏
It wasn't easy but was soon worth it. Thanks
