Scalloped Tongue

- So take a look at your tongue in the mirror ! The normal tongue outline should be round and smooth. But some people have indentations on the sides. This is not normal and it is an indication that your tongue pushing against your teeth for extended periods of time.
Why does your tongue do that?
It usually means that the space for the tongue is too small. Either the tongue is too big or the mouth is too small, or both. Limited space tends to push the tongue to the back when we lay back to sleep causing narrowing of the airway that causes anything from light snoring to severe sleep apnea. A condition where you have interrupted sleep because you can’t get enough air into your lungs. When your brain detects low levels of oxygen it triggers the release of stress hormones like Adrenaline and Cortisol, these make your muscles tighten up and you clench your jaw and try to push the tongue forward to clear the passage of air to your lungs. And that’s how your tongue develops a scalloped appearance. So go ahead, take a look in the mirror, if you see teeth marks on the side of your tongue, it is a good indication that you may be having limited air supply when you sleep.

I have had a scalloped tongue long as I can remember. I never been curious why until now. I am told that I snore so I’m assuming that’s why I have deep impressions of my teeth on the tongue.
I carried a diagnosis of sleep apnea long ago but apparently it "went away" when I lost weight or by went away they said not enough apneas per hour to need treatment, but I am STILL always exhausted (no longer wake up gasping for air though), have trouble sleeping, have hormonal imbalances, gut issues (always bloated-likely SIBO), and SEVERAL issues-likely Sjogren's as well. I think all of my issues are either from my gut/SIBO and/or this because my tongue is enlarged and always scalloped and it doesn't look like there's much space back there, but I've seen EVERY specialist and no one has helped!
I have seen many patients that have tested negative for sleep apnea but experience the same symptoms associated with the condition. It seems that you don't need to stop breathing for your body to get in stress mode. This may happens if the flow of oxygen is not adequate because of a narrow airway. This is what happens to people who snore. Talk to your dentist and ask if you may be a good candidate for an anti-snoring oral appliance.

It is definitely one of the options that can be explored. Bring up this concern at your next dental visit and ask if you are a good candidate for teeth and jaw realignment and what kind of impact this could have on your airway?. I hope that helps.
I got braces a month ago and now I have scalloped tongue, also I noticed that my tongue is getting bigger. And I often clench my jaw(idk why) . Should I consult this with my orthodontist?
Yes. As discussed in the video, Scalloped tongue is just one of the signs of a narrow airway. Make sure you bring up this concern on your next visit.
i have a scalloped tongue regularly. i live with allergies, would appreciate any help/ advice you can offer, doctors have not been thorough with me
i do have a small mouth, but im also allergic to foods and environmental allergies so i get symptoms of anaphylaxsis which i thought was causing the on again, off again tongue issues. I have used an Epipen before and still had issues with the tongue afterwards

My dentist and ortho said my tongue was just big and there was nothing I could do. Is this true?
That could be true. There is condition called macroglossia (big tongue). It rarely needs to be treated, but in certain cases when it interferes with normal function, a surgical procedure is indicated.

Can you tell me please what is the solution for the scalloped tongue ?
The solution depends on what is causing the constriction (choking) of the tongue. For some people a protective nightguard helps but other people need a more complex approach that involves restoring your bite. I hope that helps.

@@su_1717 it angioedema. There are things I am allergic to and it causes systematic swelling especially the edges of my tongue, inner ear and feet. I take zyrtec and 1000mg vitamin c for it. Hope you find your cause!

I just got this scalloped tongue this week out of nowhere. I had a tongue ulcer and it popped up. Is this permanent?
Ulcers happen for different reasons, the most common ones are trauma (biting) or stress. Usually a tongue ulcer is a red flag indicating that there is something our of balance in your system. Check your nutrition, sleep, and stress management. Fortunately most ulcers resolve within 1-2 weeks. Any ulcer that lasts longer than that needs to be evaluated by a dentist.

Unfortunately no medications for Scalloped tongue. Since it is the outcome of a structural problem (Narrow jaws), it requires addressing the condition with orthopedic (jaw realignment) or orthodontic (teeth realignment) measures.

The first step is to get evaluated. Sometimes treatment is not needed but scalloped tongue might be an indication of a serious airway constriction.

I have a scalloped tongue. It is uncomfortable to talk because the sides of my tongue are frequently pressing against my lower teeth.
Is there any way to expand the lower arch of my mouth?
Usually the tongue space is collapsed side to side (Limited by teeth) and up and down (Limited by roof of mouth and jawline). That is what we call collapse of the bite. A restorative dentist should be able to evaluate the need to expand vs. bite reconstruction.
