155: Diesel Heater Under Driver's Seat

  • I’m still learning to use this new camera and super-duper lens. That lens is amazing in low light and turns night to day, but a downside is that the very large lens aperture means that there’s LOTS of background blur….. and when it focuses on my shoulder, for instance, what you want to look at is lost in the soft, creamy bokeh.
    I reckon I’ll have to pick up a general purpose lens at some point.
    At the time of writing the heater still isn’t connected to the fuel. To get the sender unit out, the bench seat and my leisure batteries and bulkhead have to come out. Basically, screw that. I’m putting the included fuel can behind the seat. It’s cold. I can’t wait.
    The bodge job silicon draught excluder seal is not staying on. Don’t panic. I’ll get some high temperature mastic stuff.
    Please learn from my fails. This is not a how-to video. I have no doubt that most of you could do a better job.
    Love you lots
    Mevi

    Hey everyone. I realise some of you are new or missed previous videos, so here is some background…
    I used to have a 5KW heater in the back of the van, under the widthways bed. When I switched the layout to a front lengthways bed, I decided to move heating, batteries and electrics to the cab. In earlier videos I discovered the 5KW won’t fit in what is probably the only area of the cab that the exhaust and intake can SAFELY drop through. You’ll also see me swapping out 5KW looms and conduit as I installed that before testing the 5KW fit.
    There might be hacks to fit a 5KW in the cab of the Ducato/Relay/Boxer/Jumper/Promaster so please share them to the community here if you know how.
    Note that this is a UK right hand drive van… I expect the install options will be limited compared to a left hand drive van. Note that the fuel tank is under the bench seat in the UK.
    Here is a link to my shared “resources” for this van and many of the variants. It includes the instructions for the 2KW install.

Your unfiltered experiences are exactly mine in converting a van, through trial and lotsa error! Only about halfway through and I have sworn more in the last year than I have in the previous 56! I missed this when it came out, thanks for filming it Mevi, I'm sure it was a pain in the butt filming and installing, there was some useful stuff in there though. If it helps, I didn't want to mastic down the adapter plate so I used a silicone baking sheet to make a gasket by cutting it to size and cutting out holes for the inlet, outlet, fuel and screw holes. It seems to do the job.

    Hi, for the vehicle fuel tank pick up, have you seen the method of using a thin pick up pipe tapped and screwed into the breather pipe (bend with flexi pipe attached) ? The breather pipe comes off the sender when you remove its bolts, you can drill it without removing the whole sender unit. You would need to trim the pick up pipe to length and seal the pick up into the breather with araldite, or a dab of epoxy putty. Best of luck.

    • @Mevi
      @Mevi  2 роки тому +1

      In with the 2KW heater parts is a metal pipe that is probably for tapping into fuel tanks. It has a u-bend to prevent running the tank empty too. I reckon that might be useful for that method. Thanks!

      I can't post a link, but search your favourite online auction site for "71749551 ducato". Less than a tenner.
      A used replacement cover costs maybe £35, but won't include the thumb turn.

      It saves losing space in the living area. Also I'm hoping the airflow through the cab will keep the windows clear. @@Mevi that will be very useful thank you Mevi, I have a SWB Citroen Relay so saving space in the back is certainly a must. I was thinking about tapping into the fuel tank as it's just under the passenger seat, that kit would be very useful also.

    • @Mevi
      @Mevi  2 роки тому +1

      The kit is for going into the sender unit which is under a hatch between the seats, so you won't need to mess with the tank itself. I've "helped" do the same on a VW T5 and they had to drop the fuel tank to the ground.

    I have got to install my 2kw heater under the drivers seat next week. Iv bought a turret mount so I can cut one large hole. Then seal up the gap with Heatmate sealer that's rated to 300 degrees. I didn't realise that was such a large gap between the floor and the heat shield. Bet I do more swearing than you, when I fit my heater. LOL

    • @Mevi
      @Mevi  2 роки тому +1

      There’s a good 10cm or more. The metal of the floor isn’t very thick at all. You might want to avoid that seam that runs behind the seat. Hopefully your turret won’t go near it. 😎
      My last heater was mounted on metal legs with the exposed pipe work exiting through a DIY heat shielded hole. Out of necessity because I couldn’t mount directly on the thick celotex insulated floor.

    Hi Mevi! D'you recon it'd be legal to remove the passenger seat and put a recliner LazyBoy in its stead? (assuming of course that the seatbelt and all the airbag wiring will be re-integrated with the said seat).
    Thinking of putting a recliner seat on 1 meter T-rails - comfy passenger seat by day, lazyBoy cinema experience by night.

    • @Mevi
      @Mevi  2 роки тому

      You'd instantly fail the MOT. You could instead put a motorhome seat there with a swivel base. They are often big and soft with armrests, buy don't lift your legs. They are usually expensive, even if they came from a scrapyard. Even a driver's seat from a LHD van is expensive because of conversions swapping the bench for a single.

    Hello from the high desert of New Mexico USA 🇺🇸. I just found your channel and I liked and subscribed. Please replace that soft green PVC tubing that is not fuel rated with the proper hard white nylon fuel line, it's cheap and it's made for it. You can use regular black rubber fuel line from the tank to the filter and then to the pump but you need to use the hard white nylon fuel line from the pump to the heater. Please don't believe me and watch JohnMck47 on UA-cam. Keep up the good work and stay safe and God bless you and your family

      Hey thanks James. Welcome to the channel 😎
      I agree. A few videos back I bought a kit with the hard fuel line, but the seller sent the wrong *heater*. In order to the get the size I wanted - this 2KW fits under the seat - I ended up with this kit and the flexible hose.
      I'll upgrade that hose once the first tank of diesel is used up (and replace the fragile filter that broke in my hand).
      I'm using the included fuel tank for speed. I just needed the heat ASAP!
