It's incredibly frustrating to see Booktubers having to continuously make these big disclaimers all the time. Viewers just need to chill out and stop abusing them for having an opinion that differs from their own. 🙈
@@racheldemain1940 most people like fantasy to escape not fking real stuff lol u dont need to harass ppl for not liking what u like just find a new booktuber that agrees
RE: my feelings toward 13 Reasons Why, and All the Bright Places for that matter, please don't say it's because I don't understand mental illness myself. I have had my fair share of struggles with mental health and suicidal thoughts in my past, so that is not it. I just believe if you are going write a novel about mental health it should be constructive, and those two books did the opposite for me. Thanks! And always remember you never know what people have gone through so don't assume anything ☺️💜
I have read 13 Reasons why in one sitting over night and it was for me a powerful read (if you know what I mean by that). Although it was quite a while ago (planning on re-reading) I haven't perceived her as blaming them, just the last person was for me portrayed as clearly the guilty part. Anyway I have written something more on my view of the book in some of the comments below.
When I read 13 reasons why,(I was 15/16) I enjoyed it because of the focus on topics like bullying, gossiping, slut shaming and sexual abuse/rape. It even made me think twice before talking shit/gossiping about someone. But when reading the book I never even paid much attention to the mental illness and suicide side of things, if I did I might have been more critical so I get your point of view. I did think that the ending was really bad though, I didn't like the message it was sending.
Hailey In Bookland have you heard of or read the book Atonement by Ian McEwan if not I was wondering what you would think of it:) Warning: it's literature not YA!
Omg! Yes ...I'm 16 nd I tried reading percy Jackson books rn and i just can't get into it! Ahhhhh!!....I mean maybe it's because that I'm too old for these children's reads ....i have the same problem with harry potter books ...i know they might be good and has a huge fanbase but i just can't get into it ...
I liked 13 reasons why but you have a good point the way she blamed people wasn't the best was to put things because then those people are gonna have that on their shoulders for the rest of their lives and it just would hurt them to much I think. And some of the reasons they were blamed weren't the best. Although I liked it I completely understand why you didn't and agree with some things which is why this isn't my favorite read but it wasn't my worst.
I loved the book but as soon as I read it I knew people would dislike it for that very reason. To me, it made it atmospheric and creepy, but in real life I would find it a bit unforgiving to do.
I haven't perceived this as blaming others for (ultimately) your decision. It was more like trying to show them how event seemingly little things you do have an impact on someone. Just trying to make them put themselves in someone else's shoes before you just do something.
Going off of the your comment that some of the reasons weren't the best, I especially hated how Hannah treated every case with the same level of severity. I can understand the idea that to a person battling mental illness many small incidents can add up to a lot, however Hannah treats the boy who submitted her poem anonymously to a school newspaper the same way she treated a boy who sexually assaulted another girl. Asher framed every "wrong" (as I we're both said, some of the reasons were pretty poor) done to Hannah in the same melodramatic light which I felt took away from the moments that actually were serious and dire.
All the bright places is actually one of the best books I've read. I felt really connected to the main character and I thought the mental illness was very well represented without any sugarcoating. And what you mentioned about adults reacting is actually what happens when you think you can get better by yourself and don't ask others fir help. Maybe I liked it a lot because it hit too close to home and put a name (or a sentence) to the feelings I feel and have felt.
Wow I felt the excact opposite.. I felt like no connection (a little bit actually after his death). I've been suicidal too and I just didn't like it...
I've never understood why people get so offended. I think it's great when someone doesn't like every single book. Where is the fun in that lol. Great video!
it's hard to write books centered around mental illness because you don't want to turn it into a plot device and it becomes really easy to deviate from the deeply-entrenched complexities of mental illness into simply talking about how falling in love or whatever else makes things better or rosier somehow lol
ruoweii My problem with writing about metal illness is how its portrayed. I get so scared that my stories are not accurate or realistic enough. I agree on the whole plot device thing.
bresea702 well the issue is too that if someone who has a mental illness and writes a book based of their experiences, there will be people who say the book doesnt accurately represent MI but in reality not everyone experiences things like that the same way due to spectrum and things. It's like if someone wrote a book on Social Anxiety and someone who has 'classic anxiety' (im not really sure how you call it. could just be called Anxiety) will say that that isnt how Anxiety is. I dunno, my cup of tea.
@@bresea702 SAME. Finally someone else. That's why I always refrain from writing about any kind of serious illness or disorder at all. I'm so afraid it's going to be inaccurate and people are going to be (rightfully) offended.
Noo :(( I absolutely loved all the bright places. I see what you're saying with the parents not getting involved but Finch's Dad didn't care about him and abused him and his Mom was in such a fragile and broken state that she just accepted that Finch came and went as he pleased. Violet's parents tried to get help for Finch but he just left before they could. The author of the book has dealt with many of the same things in her own past so I thought it was a very realistic portrayal of what mental illness can look like. Anyways, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, I still like your channel. :)
I really loved all the bright places it had me ugly crying at the end because it hit so close to home with me when I read it, I might reread it and see how I feel about it now
this is a REALLY unpopular opinion but I didn't like Everything Everything. I didn't hate it, I think I gave it 3 stars but it was so predictable and wasn't anything special or unique at all in my opinion. I'm still excited for the film tho, I think it'll be better as a film
aquarius I really liked the idea of it first but the plot ended up being really predictable and a little boring. It was a really "light" read though so in the end I didn't regret reading it
aquarius I didn't like it either and a big part of that, for me at least, was the romance (I'm not convinced in the least that Maddie is in love). I also hated the ending (not the twist, which I didn't like either, but the actual ending).
It was totally predictable, but that part didn't bother me. I think Yoon has a very easy-to-read writing style and I really keep meaning to pick up another of her books!
The thing with All the bright places is its very down to interpretation. I understand why people find it problematic because the romance sticks out far over the subject matter but I think its important that the adults were shown as oblivious. In no way should Niven have had to make them intervene because everyone's experience of mental illness is different and in a lot of cases, the adults close by don't understand, have no idea or (horribly) don't care. I think in fiction, its important for a certain situation to occur because its a horrible truth, not a poor writing choice :) but thats just my picked apart thoughts on it because I really enjoyed it. Great video! xx
Weirdly though, I didn't like thirteen reasons why but I think that was because I was much younger but also, thinking of it now, it was very threadbare on the mental health part and the main character kinda made people with mental health look shitty. But again, maybe it needed to steer in the direction of saying some people are bitter and blame others and that could've been an interesting to play out in YA x
lol I'm going to get hate for this but I don't really like Divergent. The first book was good, I rated it 3.5 stars but the second book I literally could not get into, I might try to read it again some day but in general it wasn't my thing I guess
I respect your opinion of course, but I love all the bright places so much. I've read it so many times😂. I have had many experiences with mental illness, but I still loved iy
The Fairy Lolita Reads have you read Will Grayson, Will Grayson? I think it's pretty good, but it's also cowritten by David Leviathan. If not, depending on what kind of books you like to read, you should pick it up
hahahah SAME, Coming from someone who once RAVED & RAVED about his work once. In retrospect his narrative voice just comes across very smarmy & pretentious.
Divergent is really the only series I can think of that I just really was like, "Omg I just cannot finish this" bad. And once I found out how the series ended, I was so glad that I stopped after the first book!
Omg I know this comment is two years old but I relate so hard! Everyone hypes him up and I read the fault in our stars because it happened to be $2 at the library and thought it was an ok book but I probably would never read another one from him
The Matched trilogy for me is a perfect example of how absurd it is that almost everything in YA is stretched into a series. Like, I get it, more books means more money, but there are a lot of series that would have been just fine, and in fact better, as a long-ish standalone novel. I liked Matched well enough, Crossed was meh, and Reached pretty much sucked. I feel like it would have been so much stronger as just one book without a lot of the excess tangents and such. But authors and publishers seem too often to care more about making as much money as they can, so they look at how well other series do and they're like LET'S MAKE IT A TRILOGY when it reeeeeeally does not need to be.
Alison Rose yesss I feel like matched was a good book, crossed seemed like a watt pad fan fiction honestly, and reached just had a bunch of extra problems and dragged on and on and suddenly solved all the them at the end and it was very overwhelming
Maliiiha People complain about her, but still give those books 4 stars and 90+%'s and I'm like, 😕😕😕 Also, I refuse to read those books because of how bad the series sounds and also the bad reviews it has.
Vampire Academy is one of my most favorite series ever. However, I understand why someone would dislike it. I agree with what you said about the age at which that series is read. Even though I'm going to be a college sophomore soon, I still love the series and that is perhaps because the first time I read it I was 12!
Candid Tales I listened to the audio books for the first time at 24. I loved it. The characters have a lot of depth, the mythology is pretty unique, badass main characters, and there's so much growth. I also appreciated that the story was well planned over the 6 books.
Dealing with mental illness is hard, and dealing with a friend who has mental illness is even harder. I am now 49, and I have my own business. I am a indie perfumer, so you might be able to understand where I coming from about comments etc lol. But there was a women who just recently moved into my building. She is retired (64), and she has taken a liking to me, almost to much that now it scares me. Her sister and daughter thank me for helping her, and being a friend etc. They also informed me that they had to get her out of her last place because they felt she might have ended up being put away etc. What scares me about being friends with her is that she seems to think my stuff is also hers. Here are some examples I have a dog, and she says our dog, our books, our this that and the other thing etc. There is no our anything and her doing this is very off putting. I also find myself now becoming more critical about her, she doesn't fix herself up when she goes out, and she moans, groans, farts and even has messed herself while in Walmart. She carries a diaper bag with her everywhere etc. I find myself now wanting to distant myself from her but I don't know how. Very difficult, and moving forward I am going to have to be more careful who I make myself available to.
LOL I low key get excited when I see these types of videos so I appreciate that you made this!! And I agree with what you said about reading negative reviews to gain new perspectives. They can help us think critically about the books we read.
So happy (?) to hear someone else say that they didn't like Me and Earl and the Dying girl. I hated all the characters and the narration just grated on me so much! Still can't put a finger on why I didn't like All the Bright Places because I can't be bothered investing energy in thinking about it. Loved this video, I hope that you don't get hate for it because everyone should be able to have their own opinion!
I haven't read the book (me and earl and the dying girl) but I've re-watched the movie so many times. It never fails to make me sob. Please spare some time to watch the film, I think it's better than the book :)
I would just like to mention that when a person is depressed and suicidal, they try to think why. A lot of times it's the people around them. Things people say tend to stick with them more. The whole message of Thirteen Reasons Why is that your actions affect others. It's ok that you didn't like the book I just wanted to mention that.
I myself have been in that situation before so I know what happens and how you feel. That being said if you are writing a book about mental illness I feel it should be constructive and that book was just the opposite. ☺️
I can understand why you feel that way but that's because everybody reacts a different way when it comes to mental illness. That's why you actually can't compare your struggles with mental illness with those of others. It's oke you don't like the book because you might not be able to understand their form of mental illness. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean the one writing that book doesn't know what they are talking about, because like I said, everyone reacts in a different way.. It doesn't have to be this or that, when it comes to mental illness I don't think there is a right or a wrong way to portray it..
guys, chill. she's just sharing her opinion. no need to jump on her and lecture. she's probably seen a thousand other comments just like this. not trying to be rude but chill.
I agree. It's also annoys me when people say she has no reason to get upset for this and I get where they coming from but she was already depressed. Any little thing will affect an already depressed person. That's what people need to understand. It doesn't matter if the thing they do is small.
bridgidthepirate personally, I don't like it because in the end it seems like Hannah got everything she wanted out of killing herself. I know of the first amendment and all that, but I also know that things with such sensitive topics (i only think suicide for this case) should be approved by a company or something. This sounds dumb, i know, but i watched the 13 reasons why series before i was suicidal, and thinkung about everything on that show, i would probably hurt myself in some way if i was suicidal at that time. It's such a trigger for so many people, myself included, that I think the topic should be monitored for other's safety. I know other things like sexual assault can be very big triggers as well, but i feel like there's a line, and suicide can sometimes cross that line. I guess the line is the average suicidal human's breaking point. I dont know. This is only my opinion.
*dude, I've never met someone who has had such a similar **_"dislike"_** taste as my self.* Of the 96% of these books that I've read, I've 100% disliked those for similar reasons. (excepting Vampire Academy + Lux but that too, I see why a younger audience _would_ love them more, I read both series when I was 12 & tbh I would not *AT ALL* pick them up at _this_ point in my life)
I felt the same way about TFIOS as you did about All The Bright Places. I loved it while reading it, then I realized how much I hated it. The characters were nothing more than their disease, the dialogue was horrible and they connected over literature, which is something they didn't even have in common in the first place. I also hate Kasie West. Every single character in The Fill In Boyfriend was a douche bag, they were all horrible people. And I read te first half of By Your Side and ugh, the characters had literally no personality besides her anxiety and him being a misunderstood foster kid. Oh and I can't stand when the MC has the people pleaser complex, like stop making characters that are overly nice so everyone loves them. Barf. Those are the ones I feel pusses mr off the most of any YA book I've read. Oh and Steel by Carrie Vaughn was just bad all around.
I think The Fault in our Stars bothered me more than All The Bright Places. I'm not sure why. It may have been the cigarette metaphor and the dick author in the former.
Sophie Birch Me it was definitely the fact that their relationship was built on a love for literature where the guy's favourite book before was based on a video game for crying out loud. And how their entire personality is their illness.
I love John Green as a person (Vlogbrothers, Nerdfighteria, etc) but TFOIS drives me nuts! I enjoy PT and LFA, but haven't been able to get through AOK or WGWG (so many acronyms!). It tries to be a "realistic" representation of living with cancer, but I feel like it is the opposite. I first read it, expecting some comfort, when my mother had cancer and was going through chemo and radiation, and it ended up just making me feel frustrated and let down by John Green.
Cady with Kaleidoscope Eyes this exactly! I read TFioS while taking my mom to and from chemo, and my reaction to it was very tainted by that for a while. I ended up re-reading it and not being able to stomach how out-of-touch it seemed.
When I hear someone say they don't like a book that I am planning on reading I am like. Nope not gonna read it. Even if I've seen many people like it. Hailey you are one of my favorite youtubers! You are so amazing. I became a reader recently and all the books I have read I liked. But I did start fangirl and stopped very soon. It was just a little boring. Keep up the good work and please make more videos where you compare covers. They are sooo much fun!
Alicia Melchiot I'm the same. I could hear 100 good reviews of a book but give me one bad one of the same book and I'm like "maybe I shouldn't read it"
You are being rude though...It's okay. I will answer your question. It is not that we can't make our own opinions, hearing someone say they didn't like a book you wanted to read makes you kinda scared to pay for it because you might not like it. Especialy for me, I haven't read any BAD books and I don't want that to change
I totally feel you. I can make my own decisions but hearing other people say how much they disliked it and why really sticks with you and going in thinking its gonna be bad itll be all Ill be thinking about throughout the entire book until I finish it and make MY OWN decision. Even if I actually end up liking it, the fact the entire book I spent thinking about how and why other people didn't makes for a bad reading experience. I love her videos but Im glad I skipped through this one because most of these are on my TBR which Ive been genuinely excited to read 😅
I went into matched after receiving it as a birthday present but I heard many bad things about it. I went into it thinking 'errr what do I expect?' I ended up absolutely loving it and selling my soul to it.
I admit to reading just over half of All The Bright Places before having to stop. As someone who has issues with mental health like you mentioned, it just rubbed me up the wrong way. I really wasn't a fan. Also disliked Me and Earl and The Dying Girl - it just wasn't as funny as it thought it was, it was very much like American Pie kind of humour which I didn't enjoy. The characters were genuinely dislikeable, not even in a way that you loved to hate them. Loved seeing someone else share these opinions!
i think that the whole Angels/ Demons plot has been so badly done in YA literature. i havent read a single one that has been remotly decent. not even daughter of smoke and bone. also, i agree on matched. i didnt like It when i was 14, so im not gonna like It now that im nearly 20.
I'm currently reading Thirteen Reasons Why and was pretty surprised to hear you say you didn't like it! I do agree with the fact that Hannah (the girl who died) was approaching the situation by blaming people and I wasn't fond of that either. But, at the same time, I felt it was something that had to be done because I think it shows a valuable lesson and how words and actions can affect people more than you could ever imagine. I still do think the concept of the book is pretty cool. It was interesting to hear your opinion though!
I'm 23 & I'm the mother of a 3 year old and it takes me forever to find a book I like, I want to read young adult books but all the teenage dramas and the sappy romances, it's so tough for me to read them without thinking "wait until you have kids and bills and all that crap and then come talk to me about your problems" 😂 I'm trying to get past that but as soon as it gets to soppy romances or teenage Romance that's all about texting I just want to scratch my eyes out!
I didn't like all the bright places either. As someone who has severe mental health issues/bipolar I didn't like the portrayal. But, I tend to not like books about mental health because the portrayal isn't good.
Lauren Coleman Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who liked the series lol. I loved the first three books. The rest were just bleh and felt like they just wanted to make more money. But the first three books hold a special place in my heart. I love the characters, the setting, the romance, and the magic. Also loved how grounded in diverse and varying roots the story was. I also enjoyed the writing style and villains, even side characters held a spot in my heart...as for the movie...NO. They cut out characters, changed characters and created a whole new plot and ending and set up for the future of the story. It was stupid. It wasn’t even beautiful creatures. It was a whole new story that was just a joke.
The people that get offended probably need to grow up just a tiny lil bit (or a lot). I love these videos, myself, it's always interesting hearing other people's opinions, so thank you for making this video!
m8 that was literally the most mediocre book I have ever read oml even the movie was boring. The only book of his I enjoyed was Looking for Alaska. The rest were badddd
Same about ACOTAR! I think the hype got to me and I expected more, ending up really underwhelmed. SJM just keeps rewriting the same characters and story that wasn't even developed well in the first place.
YES, I HATE 13 REASONS WHY SO MUCH. I AGREED WITH EVERYTHING YOU SAID. It's Kind of a Funny Story is one of my favourites, but I totally get what you mean about the movie, they're so different, so if you're already attached to the movie, you wouldn't really like the book. I, however, am the other way around haha. I refuse to read All The Bright Places because of the reasons you just mentioned. Neil Gaiman is one of my favourite authors, but I haven't read the one you mentioned!
I really really liked the format you used for this video. I've noticed that a lot of the time when Booktubers are talking about books they dislike they explain the plot of the book more than they explain their feelings towards the book. Great job :D
HOW DARE YOU... to publish such a cool video! hahaha I think Throne of Glass is ok, Celeana is horrible! I can't deal with her! She doesn't even deserve the title of assassin.
Yeah but Saraj J Maas comits a serious mistake in narrative. She tells instead of showing. I'm not saying she was not an assassin, or maybe we can see her better in action on later books, but since I am judging only from th book I've read Throne of Glass, Celeana is a stuck up, anoying and arrogant idiot that gets her ass delivered to her in the end, and it's saved by deus ex machina. She claims that she is the best assassin in the land, someone is killing the contestants outside of the competion and she eats candy that were delivered as a gift, never considering they might be poisoned. She never feels people coming in and out of her room, big no for someone that kills others for a living, that can get you killed. She only cares about how much she can walk on the castle, how many pretty dresses she has and how she hates girls of upper class. How is this an assassin?
LeaTheHatless Considering you have never read the other books it's hard to consider your opinion. and why would the Prince poison her with chocolate. that doesn't make sense. she does prove she was an amazing assassins. if u were paying attention when you were reading. she was beating everyone easily in that competition. the only guy she had a problem with had something inside him which if I if they tell u that book. don't forget that she was just in prison starving and being beaten so God forbid she's not on her game.... she deserves her arrogance after all she's been through and there's still a lot you don't know so...
I understand your points and I agree. But it gets to a point that is just repetitive hearing the same thing over and over again and never seeing much happening. Dunno, I did liked the story and other characters but it's hard to continue a series when you don't like the main character. For me a series should stand out on the first novel and start in a fantastic way. I don't need to read the other books to get a feeling or actually seeing Celeana be stealthy and ruthless. Is the same thing as saying Harry Potter and Hogwarts are awesome but you have to read the entire series to understand why. I don't have to. I get in the the first novel. At the same time, we are free to have diferent opinions about books. I'm glad you found Throne of Glass amazing. I wish I did too. Sadly, I didn't. :/
I loved Celaena in the first 3 books and the prequel, then the 4th is meh, she started to irritate me... Now I hate her, but... I really like the plot, so I will continue until end.😂
I love love love your bookshelves in the background!! I love how they're colour-coded and the pop figures that go with the colours and everything too!!!
There's this book that I REALLY hate called 'sisters of blood and spirit' by Kady Cross. This book goes from 0 to 100 in a flash. There was NO transition to the conflict of the story and they didnt have ANY back story for the two main characters. Adding onto that the romantic relationships in this are very confusing and as soon as you think they're a couple the author makes it seem like they aren't. I dunno. I may have to read it again because it's been awhile, but thats what I gathered from this book and would pretty much give it a 1/10 if given the option.
same, i bought it because of the hype and I actually enjoyed the character cath but the story was really..bland and boring? like I didnt get where it was going...or didnt understand what was the reason for it overall... :/
I absolutely hated 13 reasons why I didn't even finish reading it. The show was actually kind of interesting, but the book just made me angry. Hannah blamed everything on everyone else and didn't speak up when she needed to. I think the message of the whole story was lost and just some of the reasons weren't good enough for me, they made me dislike her more.
I love the LUX seres, Fallen Series, and All The Bright Places but it feels refreshing seeing someone else's point of views on why they don't like it. Opens my mind more to different perspectives and tastes in books. I LOVE your videos so much and YOU, I always get so excited when you upload a new video. So thank you so much!
Winter Addict don't worry you're not alone! Actually the majority of people I know dislike the mortal instruments. I personally like a lot of her books, but everyone has their own opinion ☺️
I read Matched at a point where I was really controlled by my OCD and I felt the need to have to finish the series. I hated them and dragged myself through them. Needless to say, I didn't read another book for a year after that
SUPER unpopular opinion but I don't like anything Cassandra Clare has written. I didn't like City of Bones, and I didn't make it 30 pages into Clockwork Angel. I find the characters to be underdeveloped and tropey, and the writing juvenile, like she's trying too hard. I probably would have liked them when I was a teenager but I got into them far too late.
Can you recommend some books dealing with disability that you have liked? As a disabled person, I am always looking for good portrayals. Thanks! Love your videos!
OMG I HATED Beautiful Creatures. I struggled through that, ugh. The Southern thing didn't bother me, but maybe that's because I live in the South haha. But Vampire Academy though, I can't help it I LOVE Vampire Academy. Dimitri is one of my favorite male characters.
I had the EXACT same thoughts and feels with Vampire Academy and Fallen omg. I got three books into the Fallen series before I just couldn't finish it, I loved the first book when I read it but now I have no idea how or why!
every sarah j maas's books are preposterous, abhorrent and inconsistent. i don't understand how like really how???? can someone actually read them and think what a beautiful depiction of strong female characters and healthy relationship yikes yikes yikes
I have problems with both her series especially the characters in ToG *cough cough* Rowan *cough cough* and I think the dependency on having a 'mate' so annoying but the characters in ACoTaR I loved especially the night court in the second book and problems I had with the first book were pretty much all solved by the second book even though the story isn't amazing. Throne of glass is almost the opposite in that it has an interesting plot but the characters feel empty and annoying. Btw I do actually really like both series despite being aware of their problems.
I often wonder about the mental and or emotional stability of people who get so worked up that someone doesn't like a book that they do. Some of the extreme reactions, especially, can't be healthy. The YA books I don't like are usually most people's favorites...Anna and the French Kiss, City of Bones, The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, The Darkest Minds, Everything Everything, Splintered, and The Selection.
I hate Throne of glass. I realy wanted to like this so I tried to read it. I genuinely tried but I just couldn't. I ended up DNF the book. I found that Selena was petty and not relatable at all. And I just didn't like the beginning of the book.
tbh i didn't like six of crows, i was just very confused through out the whole time and didn't know what was going on most of the time. i'm reading the second one, hopefully it'll close the series for me in a good way
ohh really? I have six of crows on my tbr list for a verry long time and everybody who have read it says its amazing but now seeing this comment I started questioning it lol.. I was very excited for reading it I hope I ended up liking it..
Chub Chubs Did you read the Shadow and Bone series first? They explain the world sooo much better than Six of Crows and my friend recommends reading that series before Six of Crows 😊
Kiara Camara Six of Crows is literally the best YA book out there, I love it so much, but I think it's too smart for young girls, all they want is high school drama, cliche teen girls, and boys fighting over them, they don't like depth.
the only books from this video that I've read are Matched and Anna Dressed in Blood. I thought Matched was ok and I liked Anna Dressed in Blood. All the other books besides The Ocean at the End of the Lane I have no interest in reading. haha. I disliked Everything Everything. And I didn't dislike Aristotle and Dante, but I reeaaallllly didn't think it lived up to the hype at alllll. I just thought it was ok.
Hailey, have you tried reading the bloodline series? It's the branch off series to vampire academy, it's much better in my opinion and is the only reason I even read the VA series lol
Vampire Academy is my favourite series of all time, I think it's just so well done. I love Fallen & the sequels as well. I really like Matched too. The rest, I don't like or haven't read
Completely agree with your opinion on Thirteen Reasons Why. I struggled for years with symptoms of depression as well as suicidal thoughts (I say symptoms as I was never given the diagnosis) And the girlfriend of my step-brother took her own life in our garage when I was young. Personally I think that when you are at the point where you are ready to end your life, you no longer need to blame other people, I find in unrealistic that she would do something so cruel and childish at the end of her life. I would much rather read a revenge story about a girl who was bullied, or staying on the topic of depression and suicide, read from the perspective of one of her bullies, or friends, maybe both. This is my personal opinion, if your experience and opinion is different I respect that and would love to hear it.
A lot of these books are still on my TBR list, I guess I'll find out what I think of them. I love hearing different opinions about books, it makes me even more curious. Two really popular books I didn't like are Fangirl and Uprooted, everyone seems to love them and I can't stand them 😂
If she says that it's "weird" one more time. The entire point in modern literature is to develop abstract styles and individuality and if you just stick to "normal books" then what's the point in reading?
Great video! I can't believe there are some people out there who go out of their way to make to feel you have to explain yourself. For my personally, I hate how relationships are depicted in YA genre books. It's idealistic and overly romanticised, especially the love triangles. There are moments in these instances where there may be situations of where the protagonist is being mentally abused etc .i.e. Fire by Kirstin Cashore for example. The protagonist comes to love her abuser and doesn't seem to understand that this is not how a person shows love and respect for another, nor does she challenge him. I remember a video that you did awhile back about this topic and if I remember correctly, you mentioned that the same character template is used: 2 males. One who is moody, not talkative and mysterious and the other is shy, friendly but is keeping dark secrets. Whereas the female tends to be of teen age, naive and indecisive. I'm in full agreement with you there! It's a shame really... a lot of people have recommended the Clockwork Princess books by Cassandre Claire to me but a friend of mine told me there's vampires/werewolves and a love triangle in it which has put me off greatly. In honesty, I liked Brom Stroker's Dracula as it's a classic and the lore surrounding it is quite complex and rich. Yet I fear there are some YA authors out there who use vampire's/werewolves as an alternative yet similar structure to that of the typical love triangle. This I believe has given this area of literature a bad name. If you like characters who overcome great hardships and abuse, written well and richly atmosphered, I would heavily recommend all of the Chinese Cinderella books by Adeline Yen Mah and Ruth Ozeki's Tale of a Time Being :)
All the bright places was one of the very few books that made me cry while reading it. I found the portrayal of the main characters and their families to be hauntingly realistic. From working in the mental health sector I can say that I have too many times encountered parents that behave in the same way as Violet and Finch's parents do. It happens, it really really does happen. Often times adults do look the other way, miss the signs or don't get involved in the situation. If you think otherwise then you must be very fortunate in the relationships you have with the people around you because that's not the reality for many many kids. And it's so incredibly sad because even when someone finally realizes what's going on with teenagers and reaches out to help them (Violet's parents wanting to help Finch) it ends up being too late. I loved this book to pieces and it broke my heart.
I've tried to read Matched about 3 times. And failed. Just a bore really. Beautiful Creatures was okay at best, I fell asleep during the film. Anything but TFIOS that John Green writes is a massive pile of shite
I typically enjoy all books , but I never really enjoyed the illuminae series. I'm not sure why I felt the way I did when I read it , but it might have something to do with the writing style? I wanna give it another try though, since it's been a while. ☺️✨
I 100% agree with you about The Siren! I was so disappointed because I LOVE The Selection series and this book seemed like it would be such a cool concept with the sirens, but the whole love thing bothered me and the manipulative ocean was soooo weird! Love the videos girl, keep up the amazing work my fellow Canadian haha :)
For some reason, I always grin when someone says they hate Matched, cause I adore the trilogy 😂😂😂 Thanks to them, I became an avid reader and I guess I'll always feel connected to these books. Great video!
I actually really liked quite a few of these books (all the bright places, va, etc) but Its good to see your perspective 😊 my least favorite YA books are Percy Jackson, Fangirl, Legend, and DIMILY
Jennifer K Actually Percy Jackson is a middle grade series. I really enjoy this series and its one of those series I can never dislike. It has a spiecal place in my heart. I do respect your opinion though!
Jennifer K I love Percy jackson but I think fangirl is SO overrated and i don't like dimly either (the only reason I got it was because it wasn't expensive tbh)
At least half of the books mentioned in this vid I have on a list for a fictional girl I made up, since no one really knows that exact history of BookTube, I made up a girl who hot that started, back to the list, whenever I hear people talk negative about the Lux series and Fallen series, I feel guilty because some people describe them as "problematic" so for Fallen, I just made up that the girl I made up liked the first book more for the story and she found the rest of the series to be okay (like 6.1/10 okay, I haven't read it yet btw) the rest she either considers guilty pleasure or she does genuinely like them, and for a YA book I dislike is Miss Peregrines, I found it to be boring
It's incredibly frustrating to see Booktubers having to continuously make these big disclaimers all the time. Viewers just need to chill out and stop abusing them for having an opinion that differs from their own. 🙈
Books and reading are very personal . I am not a fan of Fantasy or Sci Fi but other readers may not like Historical Crime novels. .

I totally respect your perspectives on the books!
I did think that the ending was really bad though, I didn't like the message it was sending.
not all books has to be constructive, if someone get depressed so easily then don't has to read that kind of book.
Hailey In Bookland have you heard of or read the book Atonement by Ian McEwan if not I was wondering what you would think of it:) Warning: it's literature not YA!
I think the "when you read something" matters. Age and point in time can make a difference:)
Isn't this going to be a Netflix series? I ask bc I think I saw the ad on UA-cam.
Yes, at the end of March I believe!
All the bright places is actually one of the best books I've read. I felt really connected to the main character and I thought the mental illness was very well represented without any sugarcoating. And what you mentioned about adults reacting is actually what happens when you think you can get better by yourself and don't ask others fir help. Maybe I liked it a lot because it hit too close to home and put a name (or a sentence) to the feelings I feel and have felt.
fabpotatochip Your words are golden.
Wow I felt the excact opposite.. I felt like no connection (a little bit actually after his death). I've been suicidal too and I just didn't like it...
All the bright places was amazing I have no idea what she is talking about!
True!
I'm reading it rn.
That is a really good point
ruoweii My problem with writing about metal illness is how its portrayed.
Your bookshelf is goals.
I'm still excited for the film tho, I think it'll be better as a film
aquarius Yep, same. Reallllly didn't like the book at all.
aquarius I really liked the idea of it first but the plot ended up being really predictable and a little boring. It was a really "light" read though so in the end I didn't regret reading it
aquarius I didn't like it either and a big part of that, for me at least, was the romance (I'm not convinced in the least that Maddie is in love). I also hated the ending (not the twist, which I didn't like either, but the actual ending).
aquarius I agree, I gave it 3 stars too but thinking back I didn't really enjoy it much
It was totally predictable, but that part didn't bother me.
The first book was good, I rated it 3.5 stars but the second book I literally could not get into, I might try to read it again some day but in general it wasn't my thing I guess
thatgirlcarmen I used to love the series but then the movies came out and it ruined my love for the series.
SAME
That's how I feel about Hunger games, I watched the movies, they were ok. But I can't get past the 1st book, I get easily bored....
I'm strangling you through my phone. Sorry about that.
dorita ely I agree I read the serises but I didn't like it I don't even own them.
I respect your opinion of course, but I love all the bright places so much. I've read it so many times😂. I have had many experiences with mental illness, but I still loved iy
It***
super unpopular opinion but I hate everything John Green writes. his style is just annoying to read for me.
In retrospect his narrative voice just comes across very smarmy & pretentious.
kelllsey12000 I tried reading his stuff because everyone was obsessed with him but I just couldn't do it
The Fairy Lolita Reads i 100% agree. I like him, I've watched his videos and he is really smart and funny. It just doesn't translate to his writing
I read looking for Alaska and I didn't like it at all. so I'm not eager to read his other books. I guess it's not my cup of tea.
Divergent is really the only series I can think of that I just really was like, "Omg I just cannot finish this" bad. And once I found out how the series ended, I was so glad that I stopped after the first book!
The only one I liked was four but I loved the movies
Allison P I stopped after the second one
APeculiarReader yeah I only like the first book the other ones just aren’t it tbh
I honestly dislike every John Green book. Like I really tried but no.
Omg I know this comment is two years old but I relate so hard! Everyone hypes him up and I read the fault in our stars because it happened to be $2 at the library and thought it was an ok book but I probably would never read another one from him
His characters all sound like a bunch of pretentious naval gazing twats
I read all of his books and only liked paper towns.
@@mihael2800 yeah, the rest is so slow and boring :(
me too, except for the fault in our stars
The main reason i disliked The Selection series was America, she is the most annoying character ever😫
Maliiiha Well you haven't seen her daughter ahah (in the last two books). She's far more annoying than America in my opinion☺
Maliiiha Yeah haha I really liked everything about the selection except America, and that became a problem since she was the main character😫
Maliiiha America's a sweetheart compared to her daughter 😂
I understand your frustration.
I think the movie was so much better !
Awesome, I might check it out sometime - the book put me off so much that I never bothered with it! :')
i read the first few pages of all the bright places and then kind of abandoned it because i just Could Not get into it and it was so pretentious
I haven't read the book (me and earl and the dying girl) but I've re-watched the movie so many times. It never fails to make me sob. Please spare some time to watch the film, I think it's better than the book :)
Ya I didn't like it either
A lot of people hate Divergent but I loved the first book! I didn't like any other books in the series but I really enjoyed the first book :)
Cady with Kaleidoscope Eyes Completely agreed
Alicia Melchiot u should read it if u have them and wanted to read it in first place and make your opinion
honestly i read the book fangirl and at the time i enjoyed it but then looking back at it i realised how much i disliked it
Alicia Melchiot I'm the same.
Alessandra Santamaría Have you tried Penrynn and the end of days? I enjoyed that one, maybe you'll like it too.
OMG read Daughter of Smoke and Bone
Alessandra Santamaría Have you tried the Hush Hush series by Becca Fitzpatrick?
I agree about Matched. I couldn't finish the first book. I absolutely hate it. It is on my # 1 spot of hate list
Miss Julia Amy Try the Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo. It is amazing!
I didn't like all the bright places either. As someone who has severe mental health issues/bipolar I didn't like the portrayal. But, I tend to not like books about mental health because the portrayal isn't good.
You kill me with the VA! 😂 But I totally agree with you on Beautiful Creatures!
Totally the same opinion! 😂 Absolutely love VA and hate Beautiful Creatures
Lauren Coleman VAMPIRE ACADEMY!!!!!! MY PEOPLE!!!!!!!! ROMITRI!!! SYDRIAN!!!! LISSTIAN!!!! sorry... I fangirled. my absolute favorite series❤
Michelle Schocklin I love VA
I don’t understand how people can hate beautiful creatures. Sure, the movie sucked, but the book was amazing, different and unlike anything I’ve read
Lauren Coleman
Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who liked the series lol.
So many people don't like the Matched series! I don't get it😂 I actually liked it! I can't understand why it gets so much hate.
Savi Spice I just read Matched and I really liked it!
Ok so I'm not the only one 😂 It really feels like the only people who liked it are the people who blurbed it. I don't really get why tho
All The Bright Places is actually my favorite book :):
Mine too❤
It's a lovely book 💖
YAS! Matched had soo much potential, but the series just went downhill, it was a total waste of time and i absolutly hated it!
The people that get offended probably need to grow up just a tiny lil bit (or a lot). I love these videos, myself, it's always interesting hearing other people's opinions, so thank you for making this video!
EllieCeeJay yeah, same! I love these vids.
I'm probably, the only person in the world who hates paper towns by john green lol.
Just Jessica lol I'm with u
At least someone else agrees with me. lol it was so boring, and just thought it was way too over hyped.
m8 that was literally the most mediocre book I have ever read oml even the movie was boring. The only book of his I enjoyed was Looking for Alaska. The rest were badddd
Just Jessica o god this book was so horrible....
Just Jessica I think he tries to hard to be deep and relatable and fails with both
I dislike ToG series besides the second book and also ACOTAR series. I can never understand why every single character needed to be paired up
maru peng exactly! And it's like the characters change into new people in every book and it's so annoying!
maru peng AGREE
Same about ACOTAR! I think the hype got to me and I expected more, ending up really underwhelmed. SJM just keeps rewriting the same characters and story that wasn't even developed well in the first place.
Tbhhhh!!!
maru peng I hate that series as well.
I hated The Fault In Our Stars so badly I threw it across the room then went and chucked it into the recycle.
Phoebe Hodgson
Damn
I really really liked the format you used for this video. I've noticed that a lot of the time when Booktubers are talking about books they dislike they explain the plot of the book more than they explain their feelings towards the book. Great job :D
I hate Twilight with a passion.
Twilight was okay IMO, however it didn't deserve all the hype it got.
Awwww I love it but I respect your opinion!
IrOnIcJoKe me too
But ... Taylor’s van 😢
I hate it too😂😂
When you said Fallen, you broke my heart. I loved that series. And I'll re-read them forever.
HOW DARE YOU... to publish such a cool video! hahaha
I think Throne of Glass is ok, Celeana is horrible! I can't deal with her! She doesn't even deserve the title of assassin.
LeaTheHatless How does she not deserve the title. she was a trained Assassin and did it for years.....
You are really close to 100k! xxx eek I am really excited for you 😇👌😁
There's this book that I REALLY hate called 'sisters of blood and spirit' by Kady Cross. This book goes from 0 to 100 in a flash. There was NO transition to the conflict of the story and they didnt have ANY back story for the two main characters. Adding onto that the romantic relationships in this are very confusing and as soon as you think they're a couple the author makes it seem like they aren't. I dunno. I may have to read it again because it's been awhile, but thats what I gathered from this book and would pretty much give it a 1/10 if given the option.
okay but am I the only one who disliked Fangirl??
nope, me too. It's makes the cut for my 10 most _BLAH_ book I've read in all my life.
same, i bought it because of the hype and I actually enjoyed the character cath but the story was really..bland and boring? like I didnt get where it was going...or didnt understand what was the reason for it overall... :/
I love fangirl lol
The relationship annoyed me.
i didnt like it either. didnt hate it but to me it wasnt as amazing as everyone said :| i found it to be a very average YA book
I think it's really nice that you are doing this kind of videos. Everyone has a different opinion and it's really interesting to hear yours!
Well... I really hate throne of glass. *runs away*
sadaf diamandis I loved ToG but it's okay :) You don't have to run away for an opinion
I love those books, I like how I could read them easily with out my dyslexia getting in the way.
I found it boring and the characters predictable
Sadaf S I hate throne of glass as well.
I LOVE throne of glass. But I agree that it’s not for everyone and I see why people hate it. But I will forever love it 😍
I absolutely hated 13 reasons why I didn't even finish reading it. The show was actually kind of interesting, but the book just made me angry. Hannah blamed everything on everyone else and didn't speak up when she needed to. I think the message of the whole story was lost and just some of the reasons weren't good enough for me, they made me dislike her more.
Well, I did not like the Mortal Instruments or Outlander so there is that.... :/
I strongly dislike Cassandra Clare's books *runs away*
Winter Addict don't worry you're not alone!
Actually the majority of people I know dislike the mortal instruments. I personally like a lot of her books, but everyone has their own opinion ☺️
I agree I just couldn't get into them, I didn't like most of the charectors at all, but that's just what I think.
Winter Addict I'm so glad I'm not the only one 😭
sAME all she does is write about shadow hunters ugH
batsy 101 that's because shadowhunters are flawless and theres Magnus who is amazinggg
Fictionally Dysfunctional I agree. She cares more about romance, and even that she didn’t do well with AT ALL. I hate anything she’s written by far
Can you recommend some books dealing with disability that you have liked? As a disabled person, I am always looking for good portrayals. Thanks! Love your videos!
The noises in this video 😂😂
OMG I HATED Beautiful Creatures. I struggled through that, ugh. The Southern thing didn't bother me, but maybe that's because I live in the South haha. But Vampire Academy though, I can't help it I LOVE Vampire Academy. Dimitri is one of my favorite male characters.
Yes!! I H A T E D 13 Reasons Why!!
I had the EXACT same thoughts and feels with Vampire Academy and Fallen omg. I got three books into the Fallen series before I just couldn't finish it, I loved the first book when I read it but now I have no idea how or why!
every sarah j maas's books are preposterous, abhorrent and inconsistent. i don't understand how like really how???? can someone actually read them and think what a beautiful depiction of strong female characters and healthy relationship yikes yikes yikes
blue I liked the throne of glass series but I found her other series really gross and incoherent
Pink Panda and books *Celaena
Pink Panda and books I like your profile pic : )
Grace : o thanks I like yours too
Pink Panda and books I thought I were the only one ! I found Selena so stuck Up, full of herself and unlikable at all :(
DeadbySunrise24 finally someone who agrees with me
I love how you have a really familiar taste to mine, you motivated me to read more again to feel less depressed. ^^ Thank you
tbh i didn't like six of crows, i was just very confused through out the whole time and didn't know what was going on most of the time. i'm reading the second one, hopefully it'll close the series for me in a good way
Chub Chubs I had the same problem. The second one I found much more enjoyable. It was more focused on the plot rather than the world building.
I didn't really like it either. It was fine but kinda boring
I detested 13 Reasons Why and All The Bright Places, honestly, ugh.
I loved your intro into this! I agree that it makes this community great!! You go girl!
When everybody hated your favourite series xD
Hailey, have you tried reading the bloodline series? It's the branch off series to vampire academy, it's much better in my opinion and is the only reason I even read the VA series lol
Vampire Academy is my favourite series of all time, I think it's just so well done. I love Fallen & the sequels as well. I really like Matched too. The rest, I don't like or haven't read
can i just say, i love how you have colour coordinated your books and pop figures. it is honestly so pleasing, i love it!!
That awkward moment when I loved most of these lol. Especially Thirteen Reasons Why.
Completely agree with your opinion on Thirteen Reasons Why.
I struggled for years with symptoms of depression as well as suicidal thoughts (I say symptoms as I was never given the diagnosis)
And the girlfriend of my step-brother took her own life in our garage when I was young.
OMG I'M GLAD I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO DIDN'T CLICK WITH ME EARL AND THE DYING GIRL
I love your videos, Hailey!!! You're such a great UA-camr❤❤
This literally made me want to read all the books listed that I haven't read already xD
Emily steele_x That was honestly my biggest dislike about the video.
I have serious hair envy rn girl, you look amazing. Great video Hailey! (:
where are my 13 reasons why fans at???
Hey Hailey! I just wanted to tell you that I love your channel and that you're an amazing booktuber! Continue like this!!! :D
Tbh I liked matched by ally condie😂
Brayden Wilson Me too, I read all three books actually with Matched probably being my favorite.
Alexia Walke same it just seems like everyone hated them
I loved it... it was sorta like divergent but I honestly think I may have liked it better 😂
Brayden Wilson
I liked the first
Yeah I think the books got worse as the series went on though
I 100% agree with you about The Siren! I was so disappointed because I LOVE The Selection series and this book seemed like it would be such a cool concept with the sirens, but the whole love thing bothered me and the manipulative ocean was soooo weird! Love the videos girl, keep up the amazing work my fellow Canadian haha :)
thirteen reasons why is actually my favourite book
Chantal Martin it's not my favorite but I liked it too, I'm also excited to see how the netlfix adaptation is!
Maddy Oxley it was MEH. Gonna 're read it
For some reason, I always grin when someone says they hate Matched, cause I adore the trilogy 😂😂😂
Thanks to them, I became an avid reader and I guess I'll always feel connected to these books.
Great video!
I actually really liked quite a few of these books (all the bright places, va, etc) but Its good to see your perspective 😊 my least favorite YA books are Percy Jackson, Fangirl, Legend, and DIMILY
Jennifer K what is DIMILY?
www.goodreads.com/book/show/25063750-did-i-mention-i-love-you I think it must be this book
Jennifer K
Actually Percy Jackson is a middle grade series.
I did not like Divergent. It's overrated to me
At least half of the books mentioned in this vid I have on a list for a fictional girl I made up, since no one really knows that exact history of BookTube, I made up a girl who hot that started, back to the list, whenever I hear people talk negative about the Lux series and Fallen series, I feel guilty because some people describe them as "problematic" so for Fallen, I just made up that the girl I made up liked the first book more for the story and she found the rest of the series to be okay (like 6.1/10 okay, I haven't read it yet btw) the rest she either considers guilty pleasure or she does genuinely like them, and for a YA book I dislike is Miss Peregrines, I found it to be boring
who thinks tht fallen wasnt tht bad 🙈
Everybody hates my all time fav book and I dont really care as long as I love it its okay
Love your vids btw
