    Cam specs are pretty close to the R/T E49 Valiant Charger. It's funny how that Slant sounds super grunty yet my 265 Hemi sixpack has a cam about that size and it idles like it's on EFI. DCOE Webers really tame big cams surprisingly well

    I’d probably wager a solid 250-300 crank horsepower with that thing. No matter what power it makes, tony did the pretty crazy thing of COMPLETELY changing the characteristics of the engine from a smooth, slow revving, moderately torquey economical daily motor to a cackling, shrieking 6500-7k rpm free revving monster - and with 95% stock internal parts!!! I don’t know what kind of magic he did to make an engine do those things and sound the way it does and I’ve followed every part of the series on this build. Especially with so many other slant builds just sounding lazy and lame comparatively to this one, he really made it breathe fire. Took all his knowledge and know how and turned the thing into an anomaly. I’ve never heard an American six sound like that besides 10 thousand dollar billet internal prestige drag motors. Impressive to say the least.

      300 plus hp is a bit optimistic for a normally aspirated /6, even one with all these mods. If it meets or somewhat exceeds 1hp per c.i. that's a lot. If it puts @200 hp to the rear wheels it will fly because it doesn't weigh much.

      I find those numbers believable. Datsun Z cars from the 70's had straight 6 engines with even less displacement, 2 valves/cylinder and non-crossflow head regularly making well over 200 whp, sometimes 300 whp in race trim. The slant with more displacement and a solid build should be able to do it too

      A lot of circle track guys run their fans that way, simply because the rules say they can't run electric fans or pumps. It works great, just like Tony said, when idling around the pits they move plenty of air and water, then when you smash it and haul ass around the track they slip like they aren't even there. Regarding your minimal dissatisfaction with the high oil pressure. I offer the following to lower the oil pressure and reduce oil drag at the crank etc. After the break-in, consider changing the oil to AMSOIL in one of their light weight versions, like 0-w-20, and add a zinc supplement. From my twenty-four years of experience being an AMSOIL customer (and enthusiast) I trust their formulas to provide complete protection. As well, from my experience I know that their 0-w-__ formulas are so thin that upon cold engine start-up you can hear the lifters and rocker arms clacking, yet they have full protection and are in no danger due to their formulas. The AMSOIL web site is excellent and of particular interest for you there are extensive research papers at the site. I do not work for or have any investment in AMSOIL. www.amsoil.com/

      Oil pressure is being used to judge oil flow through the bearings. If the oil pressure is too high when the engine is warmed up it indicates there isn't enough clearance in the plain bearings and the oil isn't flowing fast enough to keep the bearings cooled. Besides lubricating the bearings the oil carries away the heat generated by the shearing of the oil film in the bearing. Remember that the actual oil pressure in a plain bearing is generated by the relative motion of the bearing surfaces and can be from 800psi to over 4500psi.
      20-30 psi oil pressure is ok for this engine warmed up. On a old Chevy 283 the oil pressure sensor didn't trip until the pressure was down to 10 psi. Note that on a engine like most current motorcycles have now with roller rods and main bearings you only get 5-10 psi.

    That is a sweet sounding slant 6!!! Less reciprocating mass does indeed make for quicker/higher revs.........which was Smokey Yunick's philosophy, back when he de-stroked his Chevy rat motors down to 416 cu in. Actually, the de-stroked rat motor he used in the 1967 Daytona 500 was only 403 cu in. It was intended only to shake down the car during practice BEFORE qualifying. He had originally planned on swapping up to the 416 for qualifying & the race. It was the only Chevy in the entire field because GM had dropped all factory backing, so everyone else was running 426 Hemi's & 427 Fords, making Smokey & his team the true underdogs. ( I AM NO BRAND LOYAL SNOB, I LOVE THEM ALL. But this is a true story. ) The little 403 was so much faster than everyone else during practice, that Smokey decided to gamble & use the motor for qualifying and the race itself. "The little Chevelle" won the pole position, beating all those formidable factory backed cars/teams. But he worried about the engine's durability at those higher rpm's, and strongly urged his driver: Curtis Turner, to "take it easy & stroke most of the race, then use those higher rpm's near the end, to pass the leaders & win, otherwise risk blowing the motor". They gave Turner a horribly slow pit stop, causing him to lose valuable track position. Turner became angry & frustrated, so he floored the damned thing. They say within 2 laps, he was catching the leader ( and race winner) Mario Andretti driving a Ford........and sure enough, he blew the motor. They used one of his de-stroked rat motors ( 416 cu in ) in the very next race at Atlanta, where it was also fastest in practice.........until Turner crashed & totaled the car.

      The elimination of points themselves isn't the reason. The condition, dwell, timing, and voltage to the points are why. Electronic usually fixes a lot of things, but they could have also been fixed with the points...people just usually don't anymore.

    • @Richie_the_Fixer
      @Richie_the_Fixer 3 роки тому +1

      Tony has done points vs electronic comparison in the past .
      As long as the point system is in top condition , the electronic offered no benefit up through 6000 rpm.

      Well in top shape ,agree with you with points but make 20 passes with a 45,000 volt coil ..and never touch the points.. dont know you, but I was there when the only thing was point ....then tell me electronic not better.. sorry disagree....

    Wow..Uncle Tony!! Gotta say that I am WAY impressed with the throttle response on that slant..thats fn crazy!! Man she sounds really good..it's a shame cuz so many NICE mopars met their demise at the crusher cuz back in the day people were like Nah!! If they lifted the hood and saw the slant or a 318..funny thing is even with that teeny tiny two barrel on the 318 it laid down more hp and more torque than the 5.0 mustangs of the 80's and early 90's I used to absolutely melt the tires off my 318 '72 charger,and even tho I am a dyed in the wool mustang guy if I could have any of my old cars back it would be my '72 dodge charger!!

    • @smokenchoken1736
      @smokenchoken1736 3 роки тому +1

      Yeah until the 85 model year those 5.Slows were a joke at 135 hp 243 tq, that bump in 85 to fuel injection bumped them to 185/270 which only then surpassed you 72 charger 318 at 150/260
      For an interesting comparison though the emissions 2bbl 360 FE that everyone hated and called a dog still made 196/327
      The 2bbl pickup 350 chevy made 145/250
      The 2bbl 351m Ford made 156/262
      That shows just how well that 318 stacks up and punches above its weight during the emission years

I was talking with machinist about those engines. He was telling me that with the gap between hp vs torque curve on those engines - a guy could build one to act much larger and more powerful than it actually is.

    Love the slant six's, quality materials and reliable. The distributor used a nylon gear and was the " bugger " that would spoil the fun. Bronze replacement fixed the little issue. Check all slant sixes as that may be the only reason the car was parked. I personally have seen this 4 or 5 times back in the day. Happy hunting.

    I used to work on an Aussie Charger drag car with a 265 and we ran a davies craig nylon water pump, no fan or thermostat in the motor just a thermo switch for the pump...that type of set up does away with the fan mount both pulleys belt and water pump housing completely (plated over) and saves a lot of weight..Our motor had no pulleys just romac balancer.

    Old time racers used that trick when I was coming up. Once the track went NHRA they stopped allowing the loose v-belt as sometimes that would turn into a whip and take out radiators drenching the track. You can do even better putting a electric motor off to the side of the water pump and drive the pump and fan blade with the electric motor at will..
    Do you know how much weight you took out of the body with the cheese grader???

    I'm happy to hear my '82 W150/225 engine is so light because even though it's 4wd, I won't have to use the 4wd so often if it has good traction without it, unlike my friends horrible '93 D250/Cummins traction nightmare. Now if I can only figure out how to bold a 2.2 into a B200. with rain tires for safety, you should dragrace plan Z Oscar and Bottle Rocket in the rain. I bet Oscar would win due to traction. I was impressed when your passenger got out of that beater and it was no faster without her than with her due to reduced traction; and that was on dry pavement with her in the front seat! Traction RULES!!!!!!
    Remember, both rain and mud are common in Tennessee, and 4wd is complex and burns more gas, so I wish they would bring back the Corvair wagon. Was it's engine cast iron? How does the Smart Car do in the mud? with a big tool kit behind the seat?

I built (machining and all) a slant 6 in automotive school back in about 2002 or so for a friends 65 cornet 4 door. we were younger then and used every aftermarket part we could find, new or used, it turned out to be a great motor.

      Lol wasn't sure, 63, 64, we were told it was a 66, maybe it had a different engine in it. All I know was early 60s . I tried putting a 904 in it and it didn't fit because the snout on the TC was bigger than the hole in the crank. So probably a 66 or newer 904 and a 64 225 . As I understand the snout was bigger after 65. Doesn't matter, ain't got it anymore
