They finally had someone record their own intro! Sooooo much better to not have to fast forward past 15 seconds of someone shouting at me.

I've had good results from first using the tracker mode in Superior Drummer 3 to convert the drum tracks to MIDI, choosing a drum kit that sounds somewhat similar to the real drums, and then using only the room mics in SD3 to get a fake room sound. I figured that if triggering close mic drum samples work great, it should work just fine for room mics as well.

This. It works best if you do the thing in the video and you blend the samples with the fake room. It gets a huge sound.

-send shells and oh's to a bus, shells quieter then oh
-load multiband transient designer(transify is good for this)
-lower attack of high/mid by a lot, lower bass/low mid less, maybe add sustain to bass/low mids
-gentle high/lowpass to remove extreme highs and lows, as distance/space removes the high frequencies and lessens the transients
    -delay 10-20ms
-send to room verb/IR, set dry/wet to taste(I like keeping it around 10-20% wet)
-process as you would any other drum room
Actually sounds like a drum room and not a bad digital recreation

Jacob's mixing is definitely welcomed any time. I wish I had the opportunity to at be least a fly on the wall during one of his sessions. Respect for the man that plays guitar in a great band and runs a pro studio! This technique Jacob presents is something similar I typically will do when I have been given drum tracks that have been recorded at some home not-so-great studios. However, the idea of getting more of a "washy" room is a technique I will have to utilize for sure.

I’ve been bussing all the drums to a bus with convolution IRs to create the fake room. This way I have control over how much signal from each mic is being sent to the “room” so I can mimic a room sound where the snare is cutting and the kick is subdued.

Hate to say it but...the reverb laden version sounded a little bit artificial while the non reverb version sounded more natural and real.

Could have been just a trigger. Not uncommon in metal recordings

    • @nicolofaettini7458
      @nicolofaettini7458 Рік тому +2

A lot of engineers puts a lot of dampening inside the kick drum, to make it silent, this is helpful because you end up with no kick in the OH mics and it makes the editing process way more easy and fast. Usually kick is replaced anyway so i believe he put a mic in the kick drum just to get the audio signal and then he probably used a trigger plugin and then completely removed the audio track and kept just the triggered midi file.

What happened to putting the drums in a stairwell to get different sound or moving the mics away from the kit to get a bigger sound? Modern recording is so boring.

    • @anormalguitarist1644

Everyone would probably wish for that, but not everyone has the money to go to a place with a stairwell. Can't really say modern recording is so boring when we have been finding other cheaper and cooler alternatives such as this video.

I agree with Daniel, this is no fun to have CTS so changing the way to work with mixing on a daily basis is a must. Mendel bij de Leij is also another mixer/producer that works with the pen and found this out from Jacob as well.
