Hi! I love yout channel because when I aplied to university for bioinformatics major, there wasn't really a lot of information on it. I am currentlly in the process of getting my bachelor's degree, and your channel helped me visualize what kind of career I could have after!

Hello Maria! Thanks for bringing a fellow Bioinformatics software engineer in this video, i actually want to pursue bioinf software development/ bioinf software engineering... hence, it'll be really great to have another video based on this lucrative career path, TIA ❤

Hi! Maria you're making such great content I really love it!
I'm from Germany and a bioinformatics PhD student coming from the field of biotechnology. Up to now (I'm in my first year) I've done mostly RNA-seq data analyses (using R) and computational drug repositioning using a web tool (L1000CDS2) and R (based on the CMap) but also a variety of other tools (e.g. enrichment analyses)... We also work together with the system biologists which mainly use python. Some people in my working group have a computer science background, my main supervisor has a biology/ system engineering background which made my life MUCH easier as he's got an approach where even someone with literally no data science experience is able to learn these things.
Anyways, from what I now there are more positions available in Germany for bioinformaticians as there are actually bioinformaticians available to fill those positions.

    Hi Maria.
Thank you so much for all of the awesome content you put out. As someone who has been on the fence about making the leap towards biology/biotech this channel has been really helpful.
    My current situation is this:
*graduating with a bachelor's in Electrical Engineering soon
    *good at programming
    *good at statistics
*pretty novice when it comes to biology
I think getting a job in bioinformatics would be really incredible. I love all things data science, and I think applying this towards biology is such a great cause. However I'm concerned that my current biology understanding (slightly above high school level) isn't very solid.
I don't think I will have time to take any biology courses before graduating. Do you think it's possible to learn on the job for bioinformatics? Or would you recommend perhaps taking some courses at a local community college?
    Thank you,
    -Logan

Thanks for your video. I'd like to ask you what suggestions could you give to someone who did PhD in metabolic modelling/systems biology and wanted to get job/postdoc in genomic analysis? In your perspective, is it difficult to transit areas after phD?

Hello, thank you for this video and for this channel... Your videos are very insightful and helpful... I am an undergraduate biotechnology student and want to pursue bioinformatics. I am not sure whether to join PhD or go for masters. Can you please make a comparison and suggest me a career path and institutions in US or international.
    Thank you.

Hi Maria! I actually have a very specific question regarding on Phd application hope you can help me out. I am planning to apply for bioinformatics/Comp Bio Phd programs this year. I am more from biological background and have rich research experience on bioinformatics, like analyzing NGS lab or public data and luckily have my name as fourth author on some published papers, but I am very afraid I cannot compete with the applicants from CS or Machine learning background, which I think is valued more and more of the program admission. Because of my fail on applications last year, I am a little losing my confidence on my skillsets and experience.
So my question is, do you know how I can stand out from the applicants or do you think I should apply to a more biological programs than bioinformatics program?

      That's a tough question.
There are certainly programs that will mostly be looking for CS people. I was given a surprise algorithms test at one interview despite being a bio major. I think one thing you can look for is if the professors themselves have more biology backgrounds or if they come from CS or even math/physics. You might have better luck getting into a program that isn't entirely full of CS people.
One other thing is you might be able to prove that you can handle CS by doing some coding projects and adding them to your resumé. One thing that would look impressive and give you some CS confidence is picking an ML tutorial example and adapting it to run on a different dataset, perhaps something biology-related. Projects like that could be a good way to set yourself apart.
Also check out GradCafe if you haven't seen it before. It helped me to figure out where I stood in relation to other candidates -- mostly I was following who got in where and how impressive they looked compared to myself :)
Okay, those are some initial thoughts. What happened last year, how many schools did you apply to and did you get interviews?

@@OMGenomics Hi Maria, thanks so much for the advice! The advice about looking into the professors' background is a good strategy. I applied for 7 programs last year, most of them on the east coast, (BU, UNC, CMU, UPenn, Cornell, NYU....) and got 2 interviews, NYU Langone and UNC, but all got rejected. And especially I was an NYU student and did research in some labs for about 2 years.

i would love to pursue bioinformatics or computational biology , but I believe God put certain people on this earth with gifted intellectual power and I don't think I was chosen :/
