Saint James of the Marches -
    28th November 2024 -
Today, the Church honours Saint James of the Marches, a 15th-century Franciscan friar whose life was marked by a zealous commitment to preaching, defending the faith, and promoting justice for the poor. His story inspires us to live with courage and integrity, even in the face of challenges.
Born in 1394 in Monteprandone, a small town in the Marches region of Italy, James was the son of poor but devout parents. Recognising his intellectual talents early, he was sent to study at the University of Perugia, where he excelled in law. Despite his promising career prospects, James chose to dedicate his life to Christ and entered the Franciscan Order in 1416.
Under the spiritual guidance of Saint Bernardine of Siena, James embraced the Franciscan ideals of poverty, humility, and evangelisation. After his ordination, he embarked on a life of missionary work that would see him become one of the greatest preachers of his time.
James of the Marches became renowned for his powerful sermons, often delivered in open squares to accommodate the thousands who came to hear him. Fluent in both Scripture and theology, he addressed pressing issues of his day, including greed, corruption, and the exploitation of the poor. His persuasive words and deep compassion led to many conversions and social reforms.
A key aspect of his ministry was combating heresy, particularly in regions where erroneous teachings had taken hold. With wisdom and charity, he sought to correct false beliefs and bring people back to the truth of the Catholic faith.
Saint James was also a pioneer in economic justice. Recognising the harm caused by excessive debt, he promoted the establishment of "montes pietatis" - charitable lending institutions that offered low-interest loans to the poor as an alternative to usury. This innovative approach not only alleviated poverty but also reflected the Church's commitment to social equity.
While Saint James was known for his public ministry, his private life was marked by intense prayer and asceticism. He often fasted for days and spent long hours in contemplation. His humility was evident in his refusal to accept positions of power within the Franciscan Order, choosing instead to remain a simple friar.
One lesser-known episode of his life involves his devotion to the Eucharist. It is said that during one of his missions, he confronted a group of blasphemers who mocked the Real Presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. With unwavering faith, he challenged them to test the truth of the Eucharist. Tradition holds that miraculous signs confirmed his words, leading many to repent.
Saint James often spoke about the transformative power of God’s love. In one of his sermons, he declared:
"What greater wealth is there than the peace of a heart that trusts in God? Let us live simply, so that others may simply live."
    Relevance to Today
Saint James’s life resonates strongly with the issues of our time. His advocacy for the poor and his efforts to combat social injustice remind us of our duty to care for the vulnerable. His courage in preaching the truth challenges us to stand firm in our faith, even when it is unpopular.
For young people, his example encourages us to seek a life of purpose, grounded in faith and service to others. In a world often driven by materialism and self-interest, his message of simplicity and trust in God remains profoundly relevant.
