The most I miss about Helsinki , as I live in London now, is the cleanliness. I hate when people just litter here and there is bags of trash all over the place. It stinks also. I do not understand. I also miss the food in Helsinki. As you live around the same area as I lived with my bf, please try Fat Ramen from Hietalahden Kauppahalli! Best ramen ever! Hietalahden kauppalli also have some cool tasting/wine/music happenings. And also try Kippo, order the Sir Pesto sandwich with mozzarella. I dream about that sandwich. Best thing ever is to bake a traditional apple pie, take that with you and eat it with a loved one/ones in Eiran ranta.

Wow thank you for the great tips. Can't wait to try that dream sandwich! And yes, the trash situation in London is terrible!

I'm an American who dated a guy from Finland so I got several opportunities to travel to Finland. I would say, I love their airport because it reminds me of my first time I travelled internationally. There is also a really nice cafe bakery but can't remember the name. We also sat at the top of the steps of this huge church in Helsinki. Other wonderful places include the outdoor market, the area where cruise ships dock or come near, the former prison turned hotel, a small beach area just off his cousin's neighborhood. So beautiful and yes, clean.

Back again, not a negative because I travelled for Love and considered him to be my best friend at the time. He did ask me to marry him. I was barely out of Undergrad and wanted to experience more of the world and to truly began my career. That first trip outside of the USA inspired my entire family to get passports and travel the world(together, Sister Trips, and me as a fabulous Party of One). I adore the Nordic-Scandinavian cultures (and it's People) and I even practice Hygge to this day. He still holds a special place in my heart and I wish him only the best life has to offer.

Dave, I highly recommend a café called ”Café Aalto” if you haven’t already been there :) It is an expensive, but an insanely good café. The adress is ”Pohjoisesplanadi 39, Helsinki” and it is in the second floor of Akateeminen Kirjakauppa/Stockmann. I’ve gone there many times on Saturdays for like at least 11 years now (I’ll turn 18 in November if that interests you in any way :D) 😌 My dad used to always take me there before he passed away when I was 10, nowadays I go there with my mom, and I’m still happy with the quality of their Karelian pies for example.
Hope you are fine, have a lovely autumm! :)
    Best regards, Johannes from Espoo

Judging by the comments, there are clearly a lot of people living in the countryside that are watching these videos xD Helsinki is a lovely and beautiful city. Wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
Eira is definitely really expensive, but really nice. Recommend going to the Kaivarin Kanuuna flea market and stopping by Café Carusel, which offers both decent food and coffee, together with a view. Of the more southern parts of town Ullanlinna is my personal favourite.
Dave, if you haven't ventured that much outside the southern areas, jump on tram 4 and go to Munkkiniemi, also really lovely, especially in the summer. Stop for coffee at Café Tarina, Max Café or Torpanranta. Check out the townhouses on Hollantilaistentie or take a stroll along Munkkiniemen puistotie.
Or take tram 1 and visit Puu-Käpylä. Along the way make a pit-stop in Vallila and have some really good kebab at King Kebab. If you feel daring, try to see if you can sneak in at the courtyard (sisäpiha) of Sammatintie 6-8 and be amazed. After that continue the ride towards Puu-Käpylä and have a walk around the neighborhood/Pohjolankatu. If you want to have some really good cake and coffee, cross Mäkelänkatu and go to western Käpylä and have a coffee at Kavhila Siili (not sure if they already closed for the summer though).
Last but not least, take the metro to Kulosaari or Herttoniemi and walk/bike out to Kivinokka. It's a really picturesque place and something you wouldn't expect to so close to the city. There are some 600 tiny summer houses (kesämaja) there. In the summer you can stay at the beach or have a donut (and coffee, of course) at Maijan kahvila, but it's absolutely worth a trip year round.

Back when I lived in UK, the one thing I missed most about Helsinki was so called "pussikalja" meaning "bag beer", when you go buy some beers or ciders and sit down in a park with friends to drink a few, maybe eat a little. That's one of the things my british friends also said they liked about Helsinki. That and the beautiful old cobblestone streets :) I feel as though UK is very focused on pub culture that people don't spend time outside (apart from a few parks in London) the same way we do here!
PS. Beautiful videography Dave, hoping to see lots of videos like this in the future as well!

I was in a 2-week long study abroad program in Helsinki, and while I wish it was so much longer, I am so grateful for the experiences there and I hope that I get the chance to go back again! Lost in Helsinki is a pretty hipster-y cafe that I really loved, Momotoko had some of the BEST ramen that I have ever had, and the open air markets near the center of the city, only a few blocks away from the cathedral at 6:20, had some of the best strawberries that I have ever tasted. So many hidden gems...I miss this city so much

I've been living in eastern Helsinki (jakomäki and mellunmäki) for 2,5 years, and i loove how close the nature is here ✨ the sea isn't too far away, there's nature reservation parks, the houses aren't built right next to each other. Sure the neighbourhoods aren't as pretty and old as Eira, but they have their own charm of quite recent wild history, old ppl living in the same areas they moved to when they were lil kids... It's just so much fun here, not too snobbish like i feel some parts of Helsinki are ✨

well, the best thing in Helsinki for my boyfriend was charging station for electric bicycles :D
I was charmed by - generally speaking - everything in this city. I love archiceture, handicrafts shops, many bicycle roads and of course cleanliness. One of surprising things was clean, fresh air and that everywhere was magical green grass or trees. Walking among Finnish people was very pleasant for me, because they were so calm, relaxed and they even have smiled sometimes. I felt very, very, very safe in this city. I eager back to Finland. Amazing country.

I'm so called "barefoot Stadilainen" which means that my family has been living in Helsinki for generations and this list is pretty good. As a Finn my personal favorite is still Stadin slangi, it's this dying "accent/slang" we have used since the late 18th century to be able to communicate with other kids who are from Russia or Sweden when we didn't have language to share and at later date kids from the U.S
I personally use Stadin slangi when talking with my family and if there's a person who speaks only Swedish or English in the room, they can usually somewhat understand what we are talking about, even more than native Finnish speakers outside of Helsinki
Also, sometimes it seems like rest of the Finland hates stadin slangi but i'm not really sure why, maybe it's just because they can't understand it.

    • @xWood4000

If you want to have a nice old fashioned sauna experience in Helsinki, I'd really recommend Kotiharjun sauna in Kallio. It's an example of old urban sauna culture in Helsinki and Finland since 1920s. Because people living in the city didn't use to have saunas nor even showers in their apartments, they went to these "city block saunas". Bring some beer, have some löyly, go outside to cool off a couple of times and feel the relaxation. (TIP, also bring a pair of sandals and "pefletti" with you. It's REALLY hot in the sauna ;))

Gotta say my impressions of cleanliness between central London and major cities in Finland (Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Turku, Tampere etc.), London wins in overall street cleanliness. If you haven't seen Turku central marketsquare at Saturday or Sunday morning, well you might think cities in Finland are clean. While there are plenty of trashcans, many people are still so damn ignorant. I was surprised while visiting in London that while there aren't bins dotted all over the place like we have, there still isn't any trash to be seen. But then there are bags on bags of house waste. Thats where I can see scale tipping another direction. Since we use central bins for apartment complexes, there's no need to dump your garbage bags to street for days waiting to be collected. Central bins are emptied every other week, and every apartment complex has them enough to not be filled, unless its Christmas time.

It's kinda hard thing to pinpoint some single favorite thing in Helsinki since I've lived here all my life. One thing you should do is to visit the suburbs or border areas of Helsinki since it's really much more than just the city center. Well you kinda do as you will be visiting Malmi which is only few kilometers from where I live. Not exactly Helsinki but you should also take a little trip and visit Luukki since you like nature and it's really not that far from Helsinki.

👩🏻‍🌾💚👋😊 Hello, Dave! Here are some of my favourite things in Helsingfors - Helsinki:
-- Kappeli (Kapellet) café - restaurant and the Esplanade park walk.
-- The Sinebrychoff Old Art Museum on the Boulevard.
-- The Atheneum National Art Museum.
-- instead of just walking along the city center streets around the railway station, take a walk along the shoreline, particularly along the South Harbour and westward.
-- The outdoor museum of Seurasaari (Fölisön) Island, including lunch at the restaurant in the middle of the island.
-- The Meilahti (Mejlans) villa area, a walk along the through-road.
-- The beach area of Munkkiniemi (Munksnäs), in the summer.
-- The atelier home of painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela at Tarvaspää.
    -- Eira, yes.
-- The National Museum on Mannerheim Street.
-- Café Ekberg on the Boulevard.
-- Café Fazer in the center.
There are nice waterfront cafés all along the shoreline.

Cleanliness is also something I have come to appreciate lately. I have now spent couple of days in Bucharest, the capital of Romania (and I'll be here for two more months), and as I've been exploring the city I've noticed that there's trash everywhere. There is garbage bins here and there, but they are all full or broken, or both. So yeah. It's quite important job that those garbage truck drivers do.

I think Munkkiniemi is probably my favorite area in Helsinki - if I had to choose an area to live in Helsinki again, that would be it (though Eira and Ullanlinna would be on the list for sure, if I could afford it). Such a nice and quiet little area by the sea, while still being close enough to the city center.
And if you want to see trash (and sanitation workers hard at work), I would recommend a visit to Rautatientori on Saturday or Sunday in the early hours of the morning. The amount of garbage everywhere is staggering from what I remember back when I lived in Helsinki.

It has been a while since I have been in Helsinki. The last time I was there my wife and I would go get breakfast at the market right on the water's edge. It was like a farmer's market but with all sorts of vendors. Our favorite was a couple of girls selling crepes with strawberries. Is this market still happening on the weekends? I don't remember if it was just the weekends or if it happened everyday.

For the optimal discount yes (2.6 euros)! But anyone can eat there and the menu changes everyday so it's great. Also good veggies too, it's where I eat 90% of my veggie intake. Of course quality isn't the highest but couldn't live without it haha

    • @davecad
      @davecad  5 років тому +1

I've not seen the Finnish monopoly board but I'd assume it's where Mayfair is on the British version

      @toinenosoite3173 5 років тому +1

Dave, unfortunately I do not know, as I have never seen a British version - only the Finnish and Swedish ones. IIRC, Eira is the last and most expensive deed, but I'm not a hundred percent sure of that. To everyone else: please correct me if I got this wrong.

I hate Helsinki. So many people around all the time, traffic is horrible, so dirty in some places and poor interned inside these bunker apartments. Now that i'm studying to get a degree they don't teach anywhere else I'm stuck here for some time. I miss my home at countryside. And I love your cinematic scenes in this video!
