I love the pic of the mirror carp you were holding! They have such an interesting scale pattern. BTW here in Pennsylvania I have caught many carp on flies over the years on crayfish flies, minnow imitations, and even wet flies nd nymph patterns. Most have been by mistake, as they are hard to target. This year 2021 we had a 17yr. cicada hatch that brought big carp to the surface, and we caught them on deer hair bugs colored like those naturals....what a blast!
I got a carp down in my spot I think it's about 20pounds I hear him jump every day when I fish and at this point I think I'd miss him if someone caught him
My Dad discovered fly rods in the mid 60's and bought each of us one and I've been fly fishing ever since. Fly fishing for Bluegill has always been my favorite. We don't have trout here. Dad considered Carp, Drum, Grinnel and Gar rough fish and we never kept them. They are fun to catch because they fight hard. Especially Gar and Grinnel. My Grandfather cooked a Buffalo once but that is the only time we ever kept a rough fish. Do you eat them?
3 year old comment, but I thought I would answer this. You can eat carp, but it heavily depends on where you catch them. The best carp for eating are the filter feeders, the grass, silver and big head carps that were imported here from Asia because they're white flesh fished, very firm, and because of how big they get here, the bones in the filet aren't as troublesome as they are with bigger ones. They make for good fish soups, or deep frying. They're fishing common carp which have darker meat, and are much stronger flavored.
@@AnsticePalo agreed, though I will say if you prep a common the right way and smoke um they are great. I start with bleeding them out in an ice bath for about an hour, then I spike their spinal column. Stick um in the smoker when I get home. It also helps to keep in mind that the cleaner the water you pull um from the cleaner they taste. I like to get them out of reservoirs that hold a lot or crawfish and have clear water. I'm lucky to be in Utah where I have plenty places and fish to choose from.
In europe they're very popular and we fish for them quite some time with the fly. Not to be a douche but those carp sizewise, we call little fish, they become great when you get them 20 pounds and over, then you get some real sport. Usually its in still water or flooded meadows along the big rivers where we catch them with salmon egg yarn flies.
We get some big carp out here in the states too. The ones in creeks like that usually get killed before they can get big because of their trash fish status most people put on them. But you can find 30-40 pounders on our bigger rivers and reservoirs, or even the great lakes. But they become more migratory when they get more water to move around in. That's when you have to wait for the spawn when they move into the shallows to target the monster sized fish.
God I hate the European elitism you guys broadcast. There are big carp everywhere. It's not just dependant on what country it's from. Sure, there are big ones in Europe and Asia, but there are also giant, 60+ pounders all over the states.
Pound for pound one of the hardest fighting fish in fresh water. I guess if it's a Texas Bonefish it must be an Oklahoma Permit. What weight Rod and what size and make of reel are you using?
+SaberNinja haha i have caught some catfish that fight hard but most are like reeling in a stick... Pound for pound I would say a smallmouth is hardest fighting. If you can find a 5 lb smallmouth and a 5 lb carp and a 5 lb catfish you would understand.
I like a 7wt myself. It lets me toss bigger flies with ease and still laying them down without slapping the water and spooking the fish. It also has enough backbone to fight +20lbs fish. Just make sure your reel has a good drag and line capacity. Carp will take me well into my backing more than once at times.
Hi Gentile Men who hit health road blocks I have just discovered fly rod fishing for the second time the rod just sat there I have health issues as well wont go into detail of the derail but I also find it therapy .Have fun glad I found you.
They(people that have no clue) always look at me as if i am crazy, flyfishing canals etc , they always link it with trout but you can catch almost any fish with it!
That's awesome to see older gentlemen get into something new, especially carp on flies!
Good to see some americans that enjoy the carp as a sportsfish.
Keep up the good work guys!

I think the bigger story is the friendship....

I come from Europe and find Wild Carp fight faster than the bigger ones.

@@saberninja5393 cats won't run away and take you into your backing like a 20lb carp does, neither will a smallie.
