    I love this. look past the fact they are carp and this is some amazing fishing. people in Ontario overlook this amazing fishing, nothing like sight fishing moster fish that fight like fresh salmon

    Just curious, what's your typical leader formula for this setup? I normally fish streamers on a sinking line, thinking about getting into carp fishing and never really tried streamers on a floating line. Could you catch them on a sinking line? Or maybe that causes the fly to sink too low for them?

    ive been targeting carp on the fly these past few weeks and I've got a few of them to bite but for some reason all of the get off after a few seconds? I've tried stripping before setting the hook like you said but they still keep on getting off. do you have any other tips for setting the hook on these fish? or should i maybe use a fluorocarbon leader to prevent line stretch?

    • @newflyfisher
      @newflyfisher  4 роки тому +1

      If you are strip setting, then it should work. We do like to use stiff mono which has little stretch for carp as well. The other option is to use flies that are tied upside down, hook up. Many small crayfish patterns i tied like this and they work very well for carp

    • @jeffersowilson7936
      @jeffersowilson7936 8 років тому +1

      Stropix no lol

    • @newflyfisher
      @newflyfisher  7 років тому +1

      you could but it might not be good for the fish. it would take longer to fight the fish to hand and release it. the excessive lactic acid build up, especially in warm water, would kill the carp

    • @EclipseStar
      @EclipseStar 7 років тому +1

      Carp can be rather powerful fish a 4wt wouldn't really be very ethical even for 5 lbs carp. For carp I'd use at least a 6wt, preferably an 8wt or 9wt especially if there's a chance for bigger ones.

    • @colincournoyer1090
      @colincournoyer1090 7 років тому +1

      It's perfectly fine for the fish, I use my 4 wt all the time.

    • @blueskinner
      @blueskinner 7 років тому

      Stropix, if you find that your rod is locking up with the the size fish you are catching then you should step up to a 6 or 7w to avoid mouth damage. With regard to a protracted fight if given proper recovery time before release the fish should be fine.

    hello friends back here in alberta we have an invasive species of prussian carp. at the moment we catch them with rod and reel with maggots, corn and various dough baits. i have heard that they can be caught on fly rod too but haven't had much luck yet. i have only tried with really small chronos. what flies would you suggest? are they fairly similar to the common carp or grass carp?

    • @hwitt2237
      @hwitt2237 Рік тому

      by now you’ve probably answered your question but prussian carp are just a breed of common carp, so most carp flies would work well

    For this fishery you should use a real carp-landingnet.
    With the net you are using, a 20-30 pound carp will make you a real problem. I use a 50 inch carp-landingnet and I'm glad I have it. I can land a 50-60 pounder without problem.
    Although my fishing is 80-90% for carp, I also flyfish for trout and grayling. Surely will try carp on the fly. Great video guys. Please more of this.

    • @miliigan

      these are wild fish that receive almost zero pressure that's why you can do this. most places in the great lakes you can do this, very few people fish for them

  • @blueskinner
    @blueskinner 7 років тому +8

    What is with the rotten landing net? You are using some of the best (most expensive) fly rods available and yet you don't have a (fairly inexpensive) fish friendly net. The open knotted pool cleaning net that is being used causes damage to scales, fins and gill covers! Fish care please Orvis.

    • @blueskinner

      Once you hook a 30-40 pound carp you will understand a 4# is by far not enough.
      Here in Europe we catch carp up to 70-80 pound carp. Not on the fly but special gear (carprods with 3 to 3.5 lbs testcurve).
