Exactly. You’re not supposed to memorize your lines because they change stuff constantly. They could decide to cut a skit short in the middle of the show, so you HAVE TO watch the cards. Always.
Zappa had everyone in the building rooting for him, which made his hosting gig's failure so shocking. He did the show earlier as a musical guest, got worked into a sketch about killer Christmas trees, and really seemed to enjoy himself and fit in. Apparently he was a lot more uncomfortable and defensive about getting stretched into doing multiple sketches, and maybe put off by the drug use that was in full force around many of the cast and writers.
I'm a huge Frank Zappa fan, but am not surprised he's on here. I was slightly amused by his antics, but also thought it was a bit cringe-worthy at times. He was known for keeping his musicians in line, and if one would have messed up like he did on the show, he would have fined them or let them go. I understand he didn't show up to read throughs, either. Too bad, he could be very funny so you'd think it would have been a great fit. The killer christmas tree bit from his shot as musical guest was pretty funny, though. I'm really amazed he's only number 19.

I honest to god did not know there was cards until like a few years back, like maybe 6 or 7 years ago, I always thought the odd looking off and reading was only for hosts who couldn’t remember their lines and got cue cards. I just didn’t know it was an every show thing, I thought it was once in awhile. I get now that since the show is done in a week, no one is gonna remember their lines to multiple sketches in under a few days.
If you ever heard Spade and Carvey on Fly on the Wall podcast. They basically say the only way to do the show is to read the cue cards, the writers change jokes, and dialog right up to going on air. The first time seeing the joke literally happens on air sometimes.
They also need to stop listing, “The episode had self-deprecating meta humor,” as a reason. How many sketches over the decades have had self-deprecating meta humor? It’s one thing if the execution is botched or if they rely on it too much, but simply having it isn’t bad in and of itself. One episode from the 1990s had Steve Martin do an opening number about how they weren’t “gonna phone it in tonight” and it was great.
In Lohan's defense she was very uncomfortable with some of the sketches because they all made fun of her in some way, that's on SNL for making Lohan look bad.
And to be fair, "SNL" itself is pretty much crap too. At least, it was when I was watching. Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz have to be some of the worst comedic actors I've ever seen. Both were notorious for "corpsing," or cracking up while in character when the script calls for the actor to be deadpan. Fallon in particular was notorious not only for smiling and spazzing at inappropriate times, but outright flubbing his lines and not even bothering to comb his hair before sketches so that he looked like he'd just woken up. Maybe that was deliberate; maybe Fallon was going for the "so-bad-it's-funny" effect. But to me, he always just looked sloppy.
SNL isn't afraid to take a gamble, and it often pays off. Some non-actors have been acceptable to great as hosts. Peyton Manning was amazing, John McCain was decent, etc.
I had an ex like this. Didnt care if attention was contrived or forced - it was like a drug to him anyway. I doubt Berle cared that the standing ovation was pre-planned.
In my opinion, even though Gal Gadot’s episode wasn’t a masterpiece, it doesn’t even deserve to be on the honorable mentions of this list. It was ok in the least. I liked the Themyscira sketch a lot.
Agreed. Affleck was very smooth and very comfortable. The Dunkin' film was VERY funny...granted it wasn't a live piece. But he was also terrific in "Christmas Miracle" when he, Cecily, and Kate's characters were transported to the North Pole.... Yeah, those sketches are really mostly Kate, but it's Cecily and guest star (in this case, Affleck) who have the more subtle part to play that also brings out the absurd humor.
Gal Gadot did a good job on SNL, did a great job in that Kardashians skit they did. She shouldn't be on the list or the honorable mentions for that matter.

True, I was shocked that it was even on the list, and to even rank that high. I would have thought Frank Zappa or Charles Gouldin would have ranked higher since their performance were cringe-y. Casey was hilarious in the Dunkin’ skit lol
The weird thing about Lindsay Lohan was back during one of her earlier mid 2000s hosting gigs just when she started making tabloid covers for her partying, the opening monologue sketch has her being visited by a future version of herself that ruined her career through bad movie choices (the prediction was Mean Girls 2, a bunch of Lifetime movies and Skinemax so all things considered they weren't that far off) and partying too hard. Lindsay assuming this was a far off version of herself asks how things are 30 years in the future, future version says she doesn't know, she's only from 2007. So really by 2012 they should've known better.
Lorne Michaels is rumored to rank Segal as the WORST... to the point that he is banned from the show (many others are banned, but they usually did or said something offensive on air.) It’s so bad, they won’t let the episode out online or on DVD at all. (You can try to look for it, it’s not there.)

I agree with most of this list. One person I would sadly add is the beloved *Ru Paul.* Ru hosted a couple months ago (?) and there was not one moment of enjoyment in the entire show. Ru is legendary and amazing so I was shocked at how bad the show was.
Andrew dice clay is a character. Andrew Silverstein is the actual person, similar to peewee Herman and Larry the cable guy. So to have him be diceman throughout the show in various sketches was painful to watch.
On the commentary and interviews for NewsRadio the cast mentions that once in a great while Phil Hartman would talk about his time on SNL. His main complaints were the cutthroat attitude of the network and the executives. And also some truly terrible hosts and guest stars who just did not belong. Either because they werent funny at all, or they didnt fit with SNL's humor.
Every single actor on SNL reads off cue cards and makes it completely obvious. There’s not one single actor that makes it look like they’re actually saying what they’re saying and not reading off cue cards.
Gal Gadot was not bad, I really enjoyed her episode. For recent hosts, I thought Phoebe Waller-Bridge's episode was so bland, Issa Rae was unfunny and Dave Chappelle's last hosting gig was trash. Overly long monologue, went off script, I didn't bother finishing it.
Yeah it was great! Problem is that she was only good in it because the skit required her to be wooden and stiff. The writing was good - not her. She always does this. Even in X-Men she ruined an iconic character by being flat, uninspired, and wooden.
I gonna say the worst in SNL is Justin Bieber becuase the singer Justin Bieber he is the most hated person and who did bad and ilegal things which make the singer the most hated Canadian and the show when he appears did not give us laugh
I remember Andrew Dice Clay actually having a decent show. The opening sketch parodying ''It's a wonderful life'' was spot on, the sex ed talk, Ridiculous Bull was lots of fun, cool Mite was pretty ridiculous.
I don't know whether you have already made a video about it, but I'd like to see a Top 10 athletes who were great SNL hosts like Peyton Manning or Dwayne Johnson, or Top 10 athletes who became good actors or comedians. Happy New Year to everyone in the staff.
I predicted Rhonda being on SNL. And I said: "She's not a comedian, she's a fighter. Give her something to hit!" And...she wasn't a hit. SNL didn't know what to do with her, and neither does the WWE.
I have to disagree w/ Gal Gadot being on the list. But boy that Charles Grodin episode was uncomfortable! Especially considering the guy was supposedly a comedic actor.
*FUN FACT:* Louise Lasser was arrested with cocaine in her purse in the spring of 1976 (her SNL hosting gig would be in July). Why in gawd's name did anyone think she would make a good SNL host?!
Alot of these people aren't actors or comedians. Are you surprised at the results when you literally throw people into the fire and expect them to survive 🤔
I thought Andrew Dice Clay was hilarious. Nora Dunn throwing a tantrum and walking out over the fact that he was there shows that she had zero sense of humor, and was not qualified to be on a comedy show.
PSA: The Grodin episode was like that on purpose. The cast were in on it. Like, there was a pre-written "backstage" sketch where the cast were "mad" at Grodin for not rehearsing. And that's all common knowledge. Completely missing the obvious joke... Super lazy, even by WatchMojo standards.
After Paris Hilton hosted in 2005, I guess Lorne got the hint that people who are famous for being famous aren’t the best hosts-what? Kim Kardashian hosted in 2021? Oh, I guess he _didn’t_ get the hint.
Are you kidding? The Charles grodin episode was brilliant. He wasn’t improvising. It was part of the joke. It was amazing and it makes this list really bad. Come on mojo.... I expect more.
Trump sucks at everything he's ever done/tried to do (USFL, University, Airline, Steaks, Casinos, Towers, SNL, and last but certainly not the least, his Presidential, let alone political career).
Trump is simply too stiff and self-involved to be a host on SNL. His not exactly comfortable with constructive criticism, let alone an innocuous joke from a live sketch. But, I digress.
Sort of a lazy job on watchmojo's part to pick on people who get invited by SNL who are not known for their comedic talents (especially on a live sketch show) and then tearing them apart for not being good. I agree with the list but why pick on them?
To be fair, you really shouldn't expect much in regards to atheletes or pop stars when they're on SNL. It's not their thing. And no one expects anything from Paris Hilton.

Looking at the cue cards is literally a part of SNL for all cast members.
It is part of the show but making it painfully obvious is well... painful to watch
Sure, but a good host doesn't make it obvious they're reading the cue cards (unless of course it's part of the sketch to do so).

If you know Zappa you know everything he did on the show was on purpose.
The Tom Green bathtub skit was burned into my mind at 8 years old. Explains a lot
I would say first, but watchmojo won that one
Yeah 4 days ago though the video was just posted
@@matthartleyjr9180 Mine says 11 hours
I feel like you can laugh a bit at Frank Zappa's episode though, because he's Frank Zappa just unapologetically being himself lol.
The Rock is clearly an athlete, Wrestling IS Athletics after all, and the guy is pretty damned funny.
That stuff is real?
@@annafowdy No, but it does require some physicality and the knowledge of how to land properly when doing the higher-flying moves. While a lot of wrasslin is scripted. Injury and death from mistimed manouvers are still a very real possibility in that industry. RIP Owen Hart.
It’s still all performances though
You do need to be quite well built to do it, but you also need have stage presence and charisma
The Rock was a performer long before he was an actor
Peyton Manning was one of their best guests too
@@annafowdy it’s basically like a live stunt show, but you have to sell it as real.
“Action stars don’t often make for great comedians”
With the exception of Dwayne Johnson
He has a ton of charisma and as a wrestler he was used to doing things live in one take.
"action stars don't make good comedians"......tell that to Dwayne Johnson
He was a wrestler before he was an action star.
@@isaacgleeth3609 everyone not living under a *ROCK* knows that
What can't Dwayne Johnson do? The man radiates talent.
He has done some comedies and he was good in them, like The Game Plan.
@@Qtipz123
Portray a complex character.
I hope to be proven wrong, but I don't believe he can do it.
I bet Netherrealm saw Rhonda Rousey’s performance on SNL and said “WE NEED TO MAKE HER THE VOICE OF SONYA!!!”
I'll tell you what i said last time you did this list. The Charles Grodin ep was a bit.....and it was hilarious.
Yes Nancy Kerrigan was awful but her and Chris Farley figure skating will always make me laugh my ass off 🤣🤣
That dunkin donut skit was gold
Every single actor on SNL reads off cue cards and makes it completely obvious. There’s not one single actor that makes it look like they’re actually saying what they’re saying and not reading off cue cards.
Who keeps trying to make Selena Gomez happen?
I know. It wouldn’t be a loss if she retires.
The type of people who think being beautiful is enough.
Yeah she can't sing for fuck's sake and she is the most ovverated singer ever!!
The idea of getting non-actors and non-comedians to host a comedy show is funny in itself. That's just part of the magic that SNL lost.
Agreed
Gal Gadot was not bad, I really enjoyed her episode. For recent hosts, I thought Phoebe Waller-Bridge's episode was so bland, Issa Rae was unfunny and Dave Chappelle's last hosting gig was trash. Overly long monologue, went off script, I didn't bother finishing it.
Issa Rae? Ew a black woman. Am I right?
There's Love Island and the Guitar Center Guy skits. Don't if they were the episode you're talking about, but pretty good.
Civic rights activist? Al out here defending Hondas 😂
By his own Accord
I thought January Jones' skit about being a homemaker was hilarious
Yeah it was great! Problem is that she was only good in it because the skit required her to be wooden and stiff. The writing was good - not her. She always does this. Even in X-Men she ruined an iconic character by being flat, uninspired, and wooden.
Me too!!!!
I am quite surprised to see her here, I saw two of her skits and I must say she was good enough even though she broke in the movie sequence skit.
I gonna say the worst in SNL is Justin Bieber becuase the singer Justin Bieber he is the most hated person and who did bad and ilegal things which make the singer the most hated Canadian and the show when he appears did not give us laugh
Umm actually the most hated Canadian is Ted Cruz, but I'm not the one who told you he's Canadian, 'Kay?
I remember Andrew Dice Clay actually having a decent show. The opening sketch parodying ''It's a wonderful life'' was spot on, the sex ed talk, Ridiculous Bull was lots of fun, cool Mite was pretty ridiculous.
He played Ally's father in A Star Is Born very well.
The Dice man was just a character but people believed he was real.
Justin Bieber and Paris Hilton.
SMH
And Rump, SMDH

Frank Zappa was just showing the world what a fraud "edgy" SNL was even back in the late 70's. He wasn't a bad host, he was ahead of his time.
He's the revolution 9 of hosts, the message is all fine and well, but as far as entertainment it doesn't work
I don't know whether you have already made a video about it, but I'd like to see a Top 10 athletes who were great SNL hosts like Peyton Manning or Dwayne Johnson, or Top 10 athletes who became good actors or comedians. Happy New Year to everyone in the staff.
Orenthal James
I predicted Rhonda being on SNL. And I said: "She's not a comedian, she's a fighter. Give her something to hit!" And...she wasn't a hit. SNL didn't know what to do with her, and neither does the WWE.
announcer says we are counting down the top 20 worst.......but the title says top 10. lmao
i guess they corrected the title. says 20 now
@@seabreeze9296 yep! haha!
I have to disagree w/ Gal Gadot being on the list. But boy that Charles Grodin episode was uncomfortable! Especially considering the guy was supposedly a comedic actor.
"Few people found him (Charles Grodin) funny or enjoyable." I've been saying that for years.
I feel the same way about Kevin Hart.
@@egyptianqueen4007 Yeah, I laughed at his comedy bits but he's kind of homophobic :/
Jacob Elordi now belongs on this list
*FUN FACT:* Louise Lasser was arrested with cocaine in her purse in the spring of 1976 (her SNL hosting gig would be in July). Why in gawd's name did anyone think she would make a good SNL host?!
Getting arrested for cocaine possession in the ‘70s was kind of par for the course…
Alot of these people aren't actors or comedians. Are you surprised at the results when you literally throw people into the fire and expect them to survive 🤔
can i just say that gal gadot as kendal jenner was AMAZING.
I thought Andrew Dice Clay was hilarious. Nora Dunn throwing a tantrum and walking out over the fact that he was there shows that she had zero sense of humor, and was not qualified to be on a comedy show.
i knew from the start that Seagal would be number one
PSA: The Grodin episode was like that on purpose. The cast were in on it. Like, there was a pre-written "backstage" sketch where the cast were "mad" at Grodin for not rehearsing. And that's all common knowledge. Completely missing the obvious joke... Super lazy, even by WatchMojo standards.
SNL has a great accidental talent of showing how unlikable some of the hosts are as people 😬
After Paris Hilton hosted in 2005, I guess Lorne got the hint that people who are famous for being famous aren’t the best hosts-what? Kim Kardashian hosted in 2021? Oh, I guess he _didn’t_ get the hint.
Are you kidding? The Charles grodin episode was brilliant. He wasn’t improvising. It was part of the joke. It was amazing and it makes this list really bad. Come on mojo.... I expect more.
I was maybe 12 when that episode was new, and even I knew it was scripted and they were doing that deliberately.
I remember Tom Brady being one step up from terrible ... and I'm a Patriots fan.
Trump sucks at everything he's ever done/tried to do (USFL, University, Airline, Steaks, Casinos, Towers, SNL, and last but certainly not the least, his Presidential, let alone political career).
i do not get the whole Americans hating Trump thing , he did more than Bush and Obama combined

I love how athletes are some of the worst and best guests. Peyton Manning and The Rock were amazing!
Top 10 Worst SNL Hosts

I think you can blame a lot of the lack of comedy on the writing of the show 😂
Bingo
Andrew Dice Clay turned out to be a decent actor. ( A star is Born and Blue Jasmine)

Phoebe’s narration: 20 Worst SNL Hosts
You didn't really show enough of the cast to make your points
To be fair, you really shouldn't expect much in regards to atheletes or pop stars when they're on SNL. It's not their thing. And no one expects anything from Paris Hilton.
They should do a top 20 surprisingly good Snl hosts
