What Does Spirit-filling Mean? | Scott Aniol

  • Likely the most important truth about the Holy Spirit's active work that we must remember is that the Holy Spirit always works through his Word. Through his illuminating power, the Spirit opens our minds and hearts to accept and submit to the authority of the Word that he inspired. And thus it is through such submission to the Word that the Spirit sanctifies us. This is critically important to recognize: the Holy Spirit will not sanctify us apart from his Word.
    In fact, this is exactly what is indicated when Paul commands us to “be filled with the Spirit” (Eph 5:18). Like Spirit baptism and illumination, Spirit filling is another work of the Spirit that has been significantly confused in by errant teaching, but careful attention to the biblical text will give us clarity as to the exact nature of this work of the Spirit.

    Good and clear teaching. Need more men like this who can dig deep into the Word and what its actually saying rather than people who skim passages and come up with horrible applications like speaking gibberish.

    Great breakdown of what is often ‘Christianese’.
    The Charismatic and Hyper-Charismatic movements have hijacked the term to be something very different. I have a family member that has been lured into NAR and has co-opted the phrase of attending a ‘spirit filled’ church.

    Acts 19:1-7 (NASB95) 1 It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus, and found some disciples. 2 He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying. 7 There were in all about twelve men.

    How about speaking simply like the Bible does . I understood maybe half what you said. Does no good if people can understand the language.

    You perform all these theological backflips to avoid the simple truth of the Power of the Holy Spirit that is alive and well inside of the born-again believer. The Holy Spirit works powerfully in and out of the Word every day.
    “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees” because that is exactly what you are teaching.

    A *calvinist* approaching a person to preach *his* “gospel”:
    "Hi! I have good news for you! I don't know if God loves you, the most probable thing is that He hates you.
    I also don't know if He died for you in the cross, only a very few were chosen… But Listen!"
    Sad but true! This is the false gospel that is being preached in many churches.
    We need urgently to bring back the *powerful, simple* and *true gospel* summarized in *John 3:16.*
    If God says that he died for everyone, *it means that He died for everyone:*
    *Isaiah 53:6* ; *John 1:29* ; *John 3:16,17* ; *John 4:42* ; *2 Corinthians 5:14,15* ; *Romans 5:18* ;
    *1 Timothy 2:6* ; *1 Timothy 4:10,11* ; *1 John 2:2* ; *John 12:47* ; *1 John 4:14* ; *Hebrews 2:9* …etc
    Let's be very careful, let's not be found liars.
