Ever wondered what a CVT feels like? Here’s how it behaves.
CVT: *Acts like a regular automatic*
right lol
CVT: I’m a 7 speed automatic :)
like motorboat
My 92 accord automatic isn’t like the cvt
Nah handles so ass you shouldn’t put them things on any car over 150hp or that thing will be ruined. Had me on the side of the road during my first week of owning my focus.
The problem with Nissan’s CVT isn’t HOW it drives, the problem is IF it drives.
IF? 😂😂😂😂😂

I have one the sv new one and it’s been great but we also have an older Sentra with 225k without no problems what so ever with the cvt just change fluids
Lol 🤣😂😂 that’s right!

@@Sussymannyou act like just because you’re transmission didn’t go to shit means every transmission is working. The majority of Nissans especially the newer Nissans with this garbage transmission has already started having problems. Notice how I said the majority? Not all, but majority
A Nissan Altimas CVT can last a long time people just don't know how to take care of it. With proper maintenance of the transmission and also not reving up the gas pedal too much, practicing soft driving. Nissan tells you exactly how to take care of your Nissan in their manual
@@Sussymannnobody said anything about ur altima bud
@@QwertyS3I plan on buying a 2009 Rogue with 130k miles because I need a vehicle with bad credit. All I've been hearing is how much crap they are but then I saw a video where basically you just have to replace the filter and fluids about every 30-50k and you should be good. It might be frequent but it's better than replacing the transmission itself. Also I've seen how people drive with a heavy foot constantly where they stomp on the gas. I don't like the fact of not knowing how the previous owner drove their car but hopefully the transmission can last me a little bit if I take care of it mechanically.
Except here's the kicker... What you just showed isn't how a CVT was designed to behave! Original CVTs, many years ago, did not simulate gear shifts. OG CVTs would hold RPMs at the higher range and just stay there. Then, the modern customer complained about how awkward and unnatural it felt. Now CVTs simulate gear shifts, completely defeating the point of a CVT! 🙃
That feeling came back with hybrids. I have a Chevy volt for instance and my engine goes up and down in RPM based on voltage of the battery not drive speed. There are many instances where I can be going 80mph and my engine just shuts off because it doesn't need any extra power.
The 1st generation of Nissan CVTs worked like that, I have one and it’s great
Which tbh is why there are more issues. The constant fluctuation of rpms while accelerating is actually harmful
@@dillzilla4454That’s interesting. Another reason to check off for wanting a hybrid…
@@karma9424 if you are looking for one, the gen2 volt is absolutely fantastic. The EV range on the car often exceeds what is advertised along with the MPG and it drives like it's a EV regardless of what mode it is in.
C-v-t = constant vehicle trouble
Depends on the CVT. Hybrids for instance (although technically not a transmission) are super simple and damn near indestructible.
So true till the best snaps lol.
Also they say it can tow lol.
The only cvt that doesn’t break every 1/2 mile is the ones can am puts in their atvs and sxs
On Nissans yes. Honda CVTs are pretty good
260k miles on my 11 Altima says otherwise 🤷
You can't talk about how smooth and shiftless a CVT is when the CVT here is programmed to sound and feel exactly like a conventional automatic with fake shift points.
“It. just. keeps. going.”
Until it overheats and stops you from going over 3k rpm
The only cvts I like are Honda cvts and Toyotas
And Subaru
In brazil, mitsubishi has a "tropical kit", basically it is a radiator to cool the cvt, works well. Imported mitsubishi heats a lot here
I rarely ever hit 3k in my 2024 Civic. The cvt usually gets me the power I need before reaching that rpm.
I only hit 4k rpm merging onto highway on ramps. These arent track cars.
Nissan CVT’s are known for giving problems, but with maintenance, they can last a long time. I own a 2007 Altima 2.5S with the CVT with 224000 kms still going strong. Always kept up with maintenance as any car owner should do
What maintenance did you do to keep it going ?

Lol hondas and toyota are reliable tho
CVT = Continuously vulnerable transmission
The reasons cvt fake shifts is because people would constantly complain of the car sounding loud and sound like it will break
Why don't folks understand it's like a scooter CVT. How bout a boat for example. The propeller is going to slip in the water and you can hear the rpms increase to a point and then fall down a tiny bit.
CVT fake shifts? ohhh hell no.
if you ever got to ride a CVT Scooter that's what it should feel like.
a CVT works by setting engine to run at a "constant" rpm usually it sets the rpm on the rpm of which it makes the max power when you floor it or max torque if you're on the throttle but not flooring it.
then the transmission variates the ratio to give it's optimal performance / economy/ etc.
this happens while you're accelerating, going up hill, cruising, or slowing down.
Fake Shifts defeats the purpose of a CVT.
maybe it does that to make it feel like a Regular A/T, because it may sound like it's broken for untrained ears.
Yes this is why they make it “shift” so people don’t think their car doesn’t work and it just makes it less effective to making a more efficient car
@@Kachigga-rs7yh its still efficient b excuse when you're driving easy for fuel economy it doesn't even shift at all as long as you're not hard on the gas
The "shifting" simulation is killing the belt. It really should sound like a motorboat.
no CVT has 1,2,3,4,5 gear. no the ratio changes bit it ain't no gears pall.
Its so sad they try to emulate it...
@@theunnamed2440 I’m sure you know but they do it because if it doesn’t “shift” people think their car doesn’t work it’d accelerate so much smoother if it didn’t “shift” into programmed “gears” cuz snowmobiles and sxs accelerate so smooth and it shows how smooth cars could too and performance would increase

@@ConnerV yea I said the opposite in S mode the car doesnt fake shift while it does on D ...
CVT has a different way to drive, it's related to the way you press into the gas pedal. As it shifts up, you should initially press slowly and then you press normally. It has something to do with torque response time in regards to rpm.
So ur supposed to ease down the gas pedal right and then go
Some of the worst transmissions ever made !!! Made for gas mileage not any durability !! Buyer beware !!!

Fake shifts... so stupid. So stupid. So so so stupid. A real CVT in the earlier models does not shift- it holds RPM at max engine power output and stays there. Customers complained- fake shifts added- CVT purpose defeated.
I had a 2004 Murano, a 2009 Altima coupe, and a 2011 Murano and never had a problem with any of them. I always said the CVT feels like driving a boat. You throttle up, the engine revs up to a static RPM, and the vehicle accelerates.
You're probably proving my theory. It's my belief that the overwhelming majority of all CVT failures are operator error. Having lived in an upstairs loft right next to the stoplights, I noticed that most people seem to think they're in a drag race when the light turns green. So if your Nissan CVTs aren't giving you any problems, I'm guessing it because you use gradual acceleration rather than those jackasses that put the pedal to the floor every time the light turns green. I gave my daughter the same advice when she bought her Rouge three years ago. She hasn't had a problem yet either.
@gop4usa12 so when u drive them are u suppose to slowly press down then after press normally
@issavibez394 I'm not a mechanical expert. But from what I know about the makeup of CVTs, I believe that anyone driving a car with a CVT should drive it in such a way as to not put stress on the CVT belt.
Boss My CVT in my Civic does not shift automatically when the sound of the engine is going HIGHER like maximum. I need to stop accelerating for 2 seconds and accelerate gain
Love that feeling my civic does the same thing but I heard the new cars with cvt are adding simulated shifting which I think is dumb I say leave it off

I never understood why a CVT instead of a regular transmission. Cheaper? I don't know.
It is more efficient (fuel to power conversion) and so it has better fuel economy (also because you could say when you would normally use 1st or 2nd gear, a CVT could use 1.5 1.7 1.9 or so) just like a veeeeery oversimplified explanation.
Cheaper, lighter, fuel efficient. Everything a manufacturer wants, piece of junk for the consumer.
C.v.t. transmissions suck! I
People hated on automatic car when they came out people hate on cvt now people will hate on the upcoming car technology. People alway find something to hate
CVT actually deserves the hate. It is not as durable as a regular geared transmission. That's why you don't see trucks, large SUVs or sports cars using this junk transmission. A half inch wide belt pulling a two ton car is not appealing. Nissan also had 2 class action lawsuits for this transmission
Belts can’t transmit torque. That’s why you don’t see larger heavier vehicles like trucks or full-size SUV’s with CVT’s. CVT’s are great for lighter vehicles like snowmobiles and go carts but the more torque you need, the worse a CVT performs.
I think we still hate automatic transmissions in this household.
What Nissan is this? You sure it’s a CVT?
“A CVT is basically a transmission that keeps going”
Then it stops, and you’re stranded, and have to buy a new car…….
Its a lease-matic trans
Tbwy work great till they fail at any given time

Earlier iterations of CVTs had the uniform revving and lack of perceptible "gear changes" that made them feel like a 1-speed with infinite ratios.
Modern CVTs however definitely mimic the shift patterns of traditional automatics, simply to accommodate the feedback car brands received over the years from drivers.

False. Golf carts use only one gear ratio.
THIS is why Nissan's cvts are so shit. It's a CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION and yet they program them to act like a normal automatic, introducing shock loads to the belt, driver, and output, guaranteeing an early death.
A cvt is essentially just a large bicycle with a motor
You couldnt be more wrong
CVT made for scooter no for car. 😮
So A stick shift if you don't want problems with a Nissan is what I'm hearing
I hate them. I like the idea but they have no place in ice engines. They burn up too easily and they’re way too difficult to diagnose when they begin to fail. You really won’t know it’s going out until it’s way too late. Conventional automatics and more so manuals are very easy to purchase second hand because it’s usually pretty obvious when they have a problem. Not so for cvts. Plus a cvt makes every vehicle they’re in feel sluggish and believe it or not they just follow a number of preset gear ranges. It’s not like the computer is smart enough to make micro adjustments like most people think. It allows for a lot more gear ranges with less transmission complexity at the cost of durability and desirability among people who like a car for something more than a commute to work.
This is true. All the benefits of a CVT are not really taken advantage of by car makers. However, a Formula 1 racing team created an extremely effective CVT and it was banned the second time they tested it. It was far superior to traditional automatics. But then again, that is formula 1, no car manufacturer is going to spend the time and money to create a good cvt.
It’s just the way they’re programmed with the gear ranges I ride snowmobiles with cvt transmissions because all do and they accelerate effortlessly and cars could too if the rpm’s stayed up and it didn’t “shift”
@Rusticle 2.0 why is that?
@@Jorge-dw8pb everyone quotes that F1 cvt. What they don't tell you was that after every race the steel belt was replaced as well as the bearings .
@@JohnS-il1dr This was also 1993 with an engine making 900BHP. Technology has had 30 years to progress, automatic transmission technology has now far surpassed manual transmissions as an example. Also mating a similar in concept CVT to a engine today making say 250hp is a very different story to the original and highly experimental cvt mated to a balls to the walls engine in a literal F1. Long time durability is not a concern in F1 whatsoever, the parts they use must last as long as the regs state they must and no further.

i'd rather learn manuals for 1 year than buy this trans 💀
I really never understood the point of making a CVT pretend to shift gears. Completely eliminates the point of the CVT since it was designed to keep the car in the powerband and accelerate as smooth as possible. Now you have a transmission that is pretending to be a regular transmission so it's not as efficient, and you also have a transmission that's much more unreliable than a regular transmission. Might as well have just put a regular transmission in the car if they were going to fake shifts with it. So redundant
I have 85k miles on my 2020 Altima 2.5. Still runs like a champ with no records of the trans fluid being changed. Obviously when I can find the fluid and filter that doesn’t cost $300 I’m gonna change it at 30k mile intervals.
I mean, you would pay $1000 every 100k miles? That sounds like a steal to me if it means keeping your transmission alive. But no point in changing it now, if you change it then it will slip and have no power. It's permanently damaged if you went that many miles on a cvt. That's why they don't last long with no maintenance
The cvt is pretending to be an automatic which not only completely undoes the point of the cvt's infinite gear ratio, but it's also bad for it. All because people were stupid / car manufactures did not inform people.

It’s so stupid. Like if they’re going to make it shift like an automatic, they might as well use one since the CVT is so garbage.
Nissan CVT is reliable as long as you keep it serviced and drive gently. The moment you try boy racer stuff is the moment you start to overheat the box and start wearing out components because Nissan have put a poor transmission cooler that cannot handle the heat produced during boy racer abuse BS......
Arguably the worst transmissions in automotive history. They have helped turn Nissan from a great to garbage.
Hard to believe that the Ford Freestyle had a half way decent CVT transmission compared to these junks Nissan has!
If it doesn’t come with a standard transmission option I don’t buy it, that’s why I jumped ship from Honda to Mazda because Honda started phasing out all their manual transmissions when all their vehicles use to have a manual transmission option. CVT has NO GEARS , it’s a computer chip simulation, Might as well drive a PS5 .
A very nice example of how to lead to rapid wear and failure of the CVT transmission.
How many miles between tyranny belt changes. Does it handle loss of traction well?
Hey
If i change my 2014 sentra's engine computer will i be able to get these simulated gear changes instead of the constant high revs
In the coming days all will change for CVT automatic,,, these words are coming for a Die Hard Manual Gear Driver,, as in city Bumper to Bumper traffic the gear cars have lost its glory and give us more leg pain peddling the clutch and hand pain by shifting gear from 1st to 2nd nowadays with 20k kms we need to change the gearbox due to constant gear changes n applying the clutch,,so i my self converted to CVT automatic car only if you are in Rural side or drive in high ways you can opt for gear vehicles
False presentation...CVT holds constant RPM.
😐 keep revving it up to 5000 rpms and your cvt will break like a rubber band. Lol. You need to keep it below 3000 rpms.
