  • In this weeks video we dive deeper in this 1979 Honda XL185s engine to discover what lies beneath the carnage we have already witnessed with the top end. Honestly, I was a bit surprised..
We definitely have our hands full now!

In order to scrap the old gaskets I use a brass spatula. It makes a sharp edge but won't cut into the aluminum case.

I found a standard practices service manual published by Honda and yes the round/chamfered end of the nut goes TOWARD the washer. The flat side goes AWAY

Hi Cody, thanks for doing this strip down, it's really helpful to have an explaination as you go (& good job on the audio overdub too!).
I have an xl185 that has seized too, except it was running at the time. I think it starved of oil, and the bottom of the piston grenaded! The piston hit the valves, and conrod flopping about wrecked the barrel. I haven't stripped the bottom yet, but expect it will have bits of metal all through it!
I'm considering whether it's worth rebuilding this engine, the parts cost really begins to add up when a few things are damaged and need replacing. I would find it really helpful if you could discuss this sort of dilemma- is it cheaper and easier to find a replacement engine? Many thanks, Kyle

I have a 79 XL185 S I need to put a clutch in do I need to soak it first? I’ve never done a clutch on a bike before

"Coat new clutch discs with engine oil" taken right from the '79~'81 Honda XL125s - 185S shop manual. You should get one, mine is a reprint and wasn't too expensive. Think I got it off fleabay.

During disassembly do you ever mark items with a sharpie to determine which side is out or getting the correct orientation for reassembly help?

I really like this format too. But, takes a lot of time to do! Is it really possible to get the parts you need? I'm struggling to get things for my 1995 VFR750.
