I recently treated my pool with a copper based algecide as I have been for a year with no problems. I raised my pool's chlorine level to high. After a while I added clorine shock trying to remove some stains. I checked after an hour to see the results. I was shocked to see dark black stains on several areas including the steps. It was bad! Yes, I panicked especially when I couldn't remove the black stains with a wire brush. I emptied half of the pool water to reduce te chlorine level. I took another chance and used some oxalic acid I use to kill rust on sidewalks. An hour later I checked the pool to find almost all black stains gone. I reapplied oxalic acid a second time. After another hour all stains were gone! I researched oxalic acid to find that Oxalic Acid is approved for pools. The pool water does get really cloudy but was clear the next day. My pool looks good.
When in this process of removing and sequestering stains with that very low chlorine level, algae can appear. How do you prevent algae while in this process? Is algae always inevitable? I would appreciate anybody's comments.
I have brown rust looking stains from fertilizer pellets that have landed in the pool and sunk to the bottom. Then they create a brown stain. How can I remove them?

Argee, 1.0 chlorine and a 7.2 ph is an invitation to algae

A pool pumis stone worked great for me for little rust looking stains at the bottom and it scraped it off with a little bit of elbow grease
