Boss, this SAVED my life! I am in the starting stage of my swap. I just ordered the rest! I was stressing hard about a drive shaft and the wiring. No one really goes into the detail you did. Thank you SO MUCH!
This video came out at the perfect time. Going to look at an NA today as a project car, but this is going to be my first and was definitely stressing. It's an auto and reading about the manual swap felt like I would be going in completely over my head - but you made it look completely reasonable! Thanks for the great vid, liked & sub'd :) Hoping today is the day I finally get to head home with a Miata...
surprised you have 77 subscribers, you'll defiantly have thousands one day 🤟cheers for this, about to swap mine to a 6 speed, hope there's not to much difference! Also, what ratio is the Auto diff? (1.8 1994) Im hoping I can still use it with the 6 as an awesome touring car!
My manual transmission on my miata broke on the shifter housing part im replacing the whole transmission and clutch should i replace the flywheel or can i reuse it (trying to spend the least amount of money)
I got confused when you said to jump two wires for the neutral switch at the end, can you explain abit more what it does and why I need to do it, whats a neutral switch?
@@originalusername143 I forgot what i was confused about at this point but i do remember its most likely the Automatic Transmission immbilizer wires, which i had to cut and splice together, they are the two heavy wires in the whole bunch, much thicker then the rest, bridge them properly otherwise the car wont start.
Great video but I am not a mechanic. I do own a 2014 Miata hardtop and I think the clutch is going out on me. Would appreciate some input. The clutch used to engage pretty far off the floor board but I noticed recently it engages just a couple inches off the floor brd. I am thinking it needs to be looked at now before too much longer. Thoughts and what I should know when searching for a mechanic to look at it? TIA
Completed the swap on my 97. Car runs like crap now. Idles at 2k + rpms and sputters when it occasionally drops down to 1k. Supposedly there is a pin on the ECU that needs to be ran to ground to tell the car it is a manual now. The circuit is called the AT / MT Designation circuit. This seems to be specific to the 96/97 cars. I have not tried to do this yet so I can't confirm in this info is valid.
Have you put a bung on the back of the intake that the automatic gearbox used as a breather I had this issue and when I put the bung on it sorted it straight away I amd just trying to figure out how to wire in my speedo
Good evening, I just saw your superb video, with a lot of detail. I have the same MX5, but with a manual gearbox and I dream of making it automatic, I am told that it is impossible so give me your opinion please
allways make sure to swap out the rear main seal just because since if it goes bad shortly after your install you'll have to pull everything apart again
I didn’t see any mention of how you address the check engine light on the dash? My understanding based on some reading is that the ecu is confused because it it looking for the auto transmission and it isn’t there. I think you have to swap the ECU for a manual version to really fix this but I think it requires reprogramming and there is something with the immobilizer that needs to be adressed too, so I'm still researching. Any tips on this would be appreciated.
i just bought a '95 NA with no engine, no transmission and no interior it has all body panels in very good condition no dents or anything (only problem is small paint chips) it has all the suspension, steering and brake components and its sitting on spare tires it was originally a automatic and i want to make it a manual any advise on bringing this car back to life and getting another miata out on the road would be greatly appreciated
You have to wire up the neutral safety switch to the manual trans to start the car or you can jump the two wires together but im currently trying to figure out how to wire up the reverse lights
This information is out there, already. Thank you for touching on the neutral safety. But what about the odo? Reverse lights? Hardly any GOOD videos showing how people are getting those two components of a manual swap is done. It would've been a very unique video, had those bases been touched. But great vid overall.
Um, I actually only buy automatic Miatas. They are lovely. I mash the go pedal and gosh, it goes! I stomp on the slow pedal, and yup, I slow right down! Then when I need to I float around corners and curves just like god meant me to! Manuals are only good for overachievers who have something to prove. Besides, i need a hand free for my drink, my girlfriend, or a doobie! Just kidding about the doobie. That would be crazy, right? Settle down, I was joking, sheesh! I love my automatic Miatas those. They are simply sublime!
A video the community needs!
i love you're tiktoks dude!

So glad it helped you! Good luck on your swap!
For real!!! I have a 97 automatic and my transmission started slipping, thank you!!
how much dd the swap cost you
I'm glad I came across this. I found an auto miata with trans issues, and I figured it'd be more fun with a manual since I'd need a new trans anyways.

bro this is the first video ive watched on your channel and i already love your videos
What was the overall cost of this swap? I have an automatic nb and i'm saving for a manual swap.
Dude thank you, I’m hopefully soon going to swap with my 2001 miata nb.
I'll never forget doing this for the first time 7 years ago
What about the instruction to wire the transmission?
at 6:36 what is that long metal lever called? and the plate with the number 74? what part is that called?

so what you're telling me is, if i manual swap a miata.... i mine aswell put a aftermarket exhaust too! Thanks
Okay soooo dumb question here, after the trans swap, what needs to be done to remove the check engine light the RIGHT way lol
How much did everything cost?? And was it hard to find parts?

How do you get the reverse lights to work after the swap ? Great vid btw !
Did you figure out about the reverse lights?

Does 1.6 transmission direct swap to 1.8 engine and differential?
Good evening, I just saw your superb video, with a lot of detail. I have the same MX5, but with a manual gearbox and I dream of making it automatic, I am told that it is impossible so give me your opinion please
If you were swapping a manual to an automatic wouldn't you require the wiring harness for an automatic transmission?
allways make sure to swap out the rear main seal just because since if it goes bad shortly after your install you'll have to pull everything apart again

hey can someone just clarify that with the 1.8 u can reuse the auto driveshaft with the manual trans?
Do you half to change the drives haft or can you use your automatic drive shaft?
13:29 I’m having trouble installing my ppf
Does it have to be a 1.8 manual transmission or can you use a 1.6 manual as well?
Can you reuse the bolts that hold the transmission to the engine?
Yes, Bell housing bolts are reusable.
Did you re-use the automatic speedo cable with the manual transmission? Checking if they are the same to try and save $100
yes u can use
just swapped mie, The wriring is abit harder because I dont have have abig connector like you, I have a bunch of different wires lol
Hpw do you remove the vss malfunction code for the vehicle speed sensor
Do you need to change the ecu?
What'd you do with all the wires from the transmission computer?
So if I have a 1.6 car and I’m swapping the 1.8 5 speed I will need the 1.8 driveshaft?
i just bought a '95 NA with no engine, no transmission and no interior
it has all body panels in very good condition no dents or anything (only problem is small paint chips)

any advise on bringing this car back to life and getting another miata out on the road would be greatly appreciated
question, will the spedometer still work after u manual swap???
yes
Thank you!
Why does do the break and throttle pedals need to be switched?
Because the auto break pedal is a bit larger and would hit the clutch pedal. Manual break pedal is as smaller.
and do your dash lights still work?
What about brake lights
If I bring a auto to you how much does it cost to swap
Question, where did you connect the clutch plug?
Nowhere, I put a wire in to jump it.
Did you have to change the ECU and Starter ???
No! You’ll have a check engine light for transmission codes but it will run.
Do you have a video of how to swap a manual Miata to an automatic?
Is the wiring different from the automatic to the manual do you have to spice anything
You have to wire up the neutral safety switch to the manual trans to start the car or you can jump the two wires together but im currently trying to figure out how to wire up the reverse lights
@@postit4273 nice does your speedometer work? I have the electronic version not cable.
@@leepeezy I haven't done the swap yet, im currently working on getting the manual trans out of the car I'm getting rid of so im not there yet
@@postit4273 okay
@@postit4273 did you ever figure out the reverse lights?

Odometer still works with a speedometer cable, reverse lights are pinned into that large main connector.
my miata wont start
same here i’m not getting a crank at all, did you ever figure it out?
do i need to swap the ecu?
Yes or itll wont start
Question is why did you buy an automatic in the first place!!!
Probably cheap enough that it was still a better deal than the rest even once the swap was factored in
Yea autos are max 2k now manuals for no damn reason are around 5k
Its so hard to find a auto i cant find one lol

Couldn't agree more auto Miatas are abominations 😂
Are you able to get the check engine light off and my speedometer doesn’t work any help is appreciated
