For me it started by experimenting with Assetto Corsa, at first it was just DLCs but then I started collecting MODs. It was overtaking my disc space so I started uninstalling other games to make room for more MODs. Then i got into Content Manager, SOL, and CSP.... it's too late for me, but hopefully your message will inspire others to avoid sim racing addiction.

I started 4 years ago from ps4, really cheap outlet T150pro (T3PA) with used Playseat challenge. Driveclub, Dirt rally and GT Sport on ps4.
Then got to pc last year that cost about 3 times more than ps4 (due GPU prices), when started collecting mods to AC, lead me to buy bigger SSD, another 2 HDDs for other games to fit.
Not to mention 100% of racing titles from ps4 bought on PC and more. Then bought arduino 3d printed shifter, handbrake and head track so the ps4 is left only for Gran Turismo.
Then custom aluminum profile rig with CLA AMG seat and last month T300.
Still need to sell T150 :p

I know this has been a joke going around the sim-racing UA-camrs but the sad truth is this could be reality for some people. It's important to analyze the quality of our relationships with all the things we do in life, and that includes sim-racing. If we are using sim racing to ignore our deepest desires and do not truly gain anything out of the activity anymore and engage with the hobby purely out of compulsion, then it is indeed doing us a disservice.
Something that has been very inspiring about Race Beyond Matter's channel is that he shares his joy and passion with sim racing and shows how he uses it as motivation and how he's created memorable experiences and friendships through it. I always appreciate your optimistic and insightful commentary about trying to live a fulfilling life, even if you're just engaging in sim-racing. It's important to have a good attitude. Please continue to share your perspective.

I almost gave up on my biggest passion to live in a virtual world.
I started sim racing when I was 12, and I’m almost 17 now. I would “drive” every day of the summer from the time I woke up, usually around 1 or 2 pm, until the sun came up the next morning and I passed out on my rig. Once school started again I would come home, having learned nothing thanks to me thinking about sim racing all day, and i would drive until dinner. After dinner was usually ice hockey practice. I loved playing but I hated putting effort into anything but sim racing. I nearly got cut from my team due to my poor performance. This all changed last summer when I turned 16. My parents bought me a brand new car which I am very grateful for. The first time I drove i started thinking about sim racing and how silly it all is. I wasted almost every second of my free time on something that got me nothing. As i was on the younger side I didn’t even have friends in the community. I had no friends at all. I met a goaltending coach who saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. I began practicing 1 on 1 with him 4 days a week for about 2 hours. This left me plenty of free time, however I just couldn’t find the desire to get on my rig and race. Putting in the work to achieve something in real life feels thousands of times better. On occasion I’ll screw around on a sim for a bit but I do believe I’ve beaten my addiction. My extra free time also got me something that had never even crossed my mind before. I got a girlfriend who I have an incredible connection with. And finally the last thing, and the one I’m most proud of. Thanks to all my practice with my new coach, I was selected for a group of 50 goaltenders across the entire US to skate in an NCAA prospects camp this week. Please, don’t get addicted to this bullshit. I will ruin your life. I was lucky enough to find my way out but some I know were not so lucky. Have an amazing day.

So true. Last month I ordered a new sim rig, DD wheel base, new wheel and new pedals. Sim rig has been build last week while crying in my mancave. Attached the wheel base all by myself as there was no one to help me holding the heavy unit, while still crying, tighten it with screws to the new rig. After I was finished with building I had to look through my tears and drag that heavy rig all by myself to the corner of my mancave. As it it incomplete and still use my love/hate Fanatec V3 pedals, and TR300 wheel with SRC mod I look at myself in the mirror and asking myself: What have I done? Why of why?

  • @avgustinzaikov8294

I personally figured out that I was going down the spiral after buying a direct drive and a dedicated triple minitor rig. Having in mind that releationships are very important, I talked with the wife and she let me put the sim rig into the corner of the main bedroom. This way, she will act as a brake for the unstoppable car that is simracing. Before that I had spent countless nights without sleep, but now I can't ignore her when she comes into the room. This was a good change that helped me personally.

My addiction is totally out of control and I'm ashamed 😔😔. Since April 2020 the dark mist descend when I was furloughed from work. Seeing sim racing on YT - Entry level FFB wheels, VR set-ups, Sim rig set-ups😥😥😥😥. I Must Have It All ..........I was hooked without turning a single wheel. My addiction had started - entry level FFB wheel Logitech G920, pedals, shifter & Project Cars 2 😉. I would get up at 5am in morning feeding my filthy love for this addiction. Little did I know just hole deep the rabbit hole went or even goes. Later on that year I purchased a basic VR PC, and an Oculus Rift S. Upgrades to that PC came thick and fast - new Chip, ram, board, graphics card the whole nine yards - (well I've got to make sure I've got an adequate system - haven't I?? 😉) - thank you Reiza...... 👍😉🥰😉👍Since April 2020 I've purchased my third wheel base (Logitech G920, Thrustmaster T300RS, Thrustmaster TS-XW) - my third Thrustmaster wheel rim (Open Wheel, SF1000, P310), and Thrustmasters T-LCM Pedals 👍. Thrustmasters Th8a shifter was not really an necessity, but oh well, better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it - Right!?🙄. Every minute of the day I think about racing, track conditions, set ups - getting the perfect race, race conditions, everything.....My spare time use to be focused on weight training in the gym,,,,,,,but now it's 110% focused my shocking addiction and running the perfect race. 😊😉👍. I couldn't take it and intentionally ran wide on the next turn. I couldn't take the stress. It was too real. And that was from racing in fake cars, where I was not in danger of harm or even losing my seat as a simulated race car driver.

You gave me some and I'm back! Just saving some cash for a rebuild, but this time, I am really in control! I know I have a life and this is all for fun! Cheers!

Honestly, there is truth in this 😂 I spent endless days building my sim rig, my OSW, building my own sim racing wheels, 3D printing magnetic shifter and buttonplates and what not. I was away from this hobby for 4 years. Was going to sell all my sim hardware and computer. But last week I told my self, ok one last ride before I sell all. And now I am looking into a new graphics card, new PC, new DD wheel and already bought me a HP Reverb G2 headset 😂😂🥲

don't forget that you all have to take responsibility as enablers of this reality escaping addiction, we take responsibility for our own addictions, but it's worse when you actually produce videos for us all to sink even deeper into this behavior..... There needs to be an organization called "Sim Racers Anonymous" where we can weekly confess our sins and go forward with a semi normal existence with the rest of humanity....

You have to be careful. I was a part of a weekly group of racers. We decided to meet in a Forza 7 lobby. It wasn't a sim. It was a safe place. We thought. Before we knew it, it was a race to spots on the leaderboards. Just a disgusting display of v12 swapped muscle cars and AWD Honda Civics. No place is safe. After that week I relapsed and am currently living in a motel playing ACC. Dodging the owner for payments.

It's all dopamine inducing activities that we do, people can get addicted to playing football, going out drinking, playing FPS games, MMORPGs... Sim Racing is just next in line of things, of course it doesn't take away from the message and indeed there may be a difference between spending 10h day playing as 5 people in Valorant compared to 10 hours solo sim racing. As one of those comes with at least some degree of social interaction.
But having a guy say "go play CS instead" is like... Alcohol is bad, go get addicted to smokes!

Thank you for the video. Sad to see you suffer. At the same time this is not different from the people that play other online games with communities that require your total attention. I actuallty see benefits from driving a sim rig. You will get a skill that you can actually use when driving a car on the street or on the track. Compatre this to all the mindless "Go there and kill 5x of things". There is nothing to be learned there a part from mouse clicking. Sometimes your mind need a way to relax and then just running around or killing digital polygons can be a perfect activity. I do this myself as well. Issue here might be connected to mentality/requirement of being a streamer and/or YTer. In order to get money out of it you have to generate content and clicks. This requires you to have something that others don't have. This can be sick tripple 65" setup or a realistic cockpit. You also have incredible knowledge that you can share with other people who are new to sim racing or want to try this hobby. You just need to keep a ballance between your virtual and real life and decide if this is your hobby that you do for fun if this is a job. Number of click or followers on your videos don't make you a better person. But if your life depends on this (financially first of all) - I can easily see how this can ger out of hands.
I'm currently building my first sim rig and I really enjoy the engineering part of it. Sure, it's a waste of time and money but it's somehting that I want to do and I enjoy it. At the same time, even in the beginning of this journey, I already have a sim racing wheel that is much better and more expensive than my real one. Probably somehting to think about. I guess this is how this starts. Instead of buying a real car one buys a sim rig for the same price.
I hope you will keep doing your videos so that we can enjoy your work and craftmanship as well as be better at driving. We love your work!
