Why Gyroflow makes no sense for action cameras - a DJI Osmo Action 4 example

  • In this video I'm testing out the Gyroflow software on my DJI Osmo Action 4 camera. Is it actually better than RockSteady and what about that 1/50s shutter speed?

    Rocksteady cannot look ahead. Gyroflow can, so it slowly zooms in when needed, but you gain full wide angle / sensor when more stable. Also you have more control over the stabilization and distortion correction in post (smooth out only micro jitters). BTW Action 2 is also supported by Gyroflow.

    A use case for Gyroflow with action cams may be mounting the action cam to say another camera (like on hotshoe or camera's cage) to capture gyro motion data - as a gyro motion data capture device. Then that data could be used to stabilize video (track motion for fx) recorded by a camera that does not have ability to output gyro data or have built in stabilization.

    Just use a faster shutter speed. The fastest possible in the situation. Add motion blur in post.

    Gyroflow is amazing. Using in-camera smoothing is completely unusable on a drone but with Gyroflow we can dial in exactly how much smoothing we want or don't want and we can even keyframe the parameters! Also it's available as a plugin so if you don't want to export prores intermediates then you can do single export workflow. 180 degrees shutter if you can operate fairly smoothly, 90 degrees shutter if you're a little bit shaky, up to 45 degrees shutter if bad.

    This was so informative, thank you. Do you have any advice on how to get smoother videos when hiking. I attach my OA4 to my back pack strap so I'm hands free, but I'm disappointed with the bouncy footage. Your help would be so greatly appreciated, cheers

    • @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens
      @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens  25 днів тому +1

      Hello. Try using Gyroflow. The bouncy footage is a problem for all action cameras. Also maybe try using RockSteady + setting. Make sure your shutter speed is at least 1/100s. Even better 1/200s.
      Thanks for the comment. Cheers!

    The built in stabilization on the Dji Action 4 and the Insta360 Ace Pro do not produce the smooth results of Gyroflow; they just don't. It's an extra step in the production but it's worth it.

    Ive been having issues with my gopro hero 10. After 2 years of no issues its now doing some strange things and freezing up when recording. After lots of resets and trying every version of the firmware and different sd cards I figured out that its something to do with the Hypersmooth. If i record without the hypersmooth on the camera works fine. So having discovered this i am now going to try using gyroflow to stabilise my footage in post. It seem the logical option as im not in a position to be buying another action cam at the moment . just installed it and goping to capture some test footage while out and about over coming days.

    Thank you so much for explaining I was looking for this informatin to be honest. I have one question. Is it possible to get motion blur with nd filteer and without the flikering ?

    • @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens
      @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens  3 місяці тому +1

      Hello. Well that's the main problem. You either have motion blur or no flickering but flickering will be minimal if the camera is not shaking because it's a result of motion blur.
      Thanks for the comment. Cheers!

    Great breakdown! It seems like Gyroflow is more effective than the in-body stabilization (probably just due to the fact that the algorithms can be more accurate as they have more processing power available) but that effectiveness exacerbates the difference between camera movement and frame data. Kind of a catch-22

  • @costas801live

    I also did my tests in low light 1/80 of a second was good enough without excessive shaking of the camera , i think you gain one stop over the rock steady in body stabilization .One stop is not bad . I also tried to stabilize my nikon z6 with the 24-70 zoom lense without success atm

  • @elgrubbio

    From a total noob perspective who wants to use this camera on a motorcycle and keep the 'cinematic' motion blur effect. Will using 60 FPS and 1/120 shutter make any difference to keep the effect but improve the image?

    • @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens
      @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens  3 місяці тому +1

      Hello. The motion blur in this case would only be noticeable if you slow the video down to 30fps (1/2 speed) otherwise you won't notice it. So with 60fps you can use a faster shutter speed and still get a smooth video.
      Thanks for the comment. Cheers!

    I don't even need stabilisation for what I do, as I shoot POV mountain biking with Gnartec Ultimate chin mount.
    I've not heard of Gyroflow. Thanks for sharing this. I won't need that now, but nice to know there's a fix if I need it. But editing software cant fix a rocking camera, rotating camera, So that's why a proper mount is needed for helmet mounted camera. or chest cam, if running around the only solution is a gimbal.

    • @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens
      @M1R0_Life_through_a_lens  6 місяців тому +1

      Hello. Nice. I think that action shots should be recorded with a higher framerate and played back with a higher framerate. In this case no motion blur is needed and the stabilisation does it's job very well. Thanks for the comment. Mary Christmas.

    great video, but the title doesn't make sense after watching. Highlight flickering is only solved by a higher shutter and gyroflow does stabalize better than rocksteady (plus it gives more freedom for settings). So gyroflow does definitely make sense
