This morning around 10am, we had some huge breaking news from the mayor's office in Medellin.
This is going to make a lot of people, especially the locals, extremely happy because this has been talked about for a long time. But the verdict has finally been handed down.
A while ago, Fico Batman Gutierrez gave an interview saying that Medellin does not want any more negative tourists. And by negative tourists, he meant those that comfort drugs and women.
And this law that is passed effective today deals with both those issues.
1. Prostitution restricted in public areas like Lleras, Provenza & Parque Poblado - for 6 months.
2. Bars and clubs selling alcohol in these areas must stop service at 1am - for 1 month.

it'll take a bit of a hit, but that void will be filled by the proper tourist coming down. I know a couple of families that want to go down to cartagena but wont cause as soon as you get in, theres drugs and S workers everywhere, not exactly suitable for minors.

Sounds like the Mayor massively overreached and skipped a few sensible steps. If prostitution is legal, clubs are legal, and staying out late is legal, but underage prostitution is abhorrent and illegal, why didn't they implement a police presence, ID checks and questioning, and random club raids, in order to get children off the streets and out of the clubs? Plus education programs in the media about not selling children into sexual slavery.
Medellin will be like Sydney when NSW Premier Mike Baird implemented early closing times and lock out laws, which destroyed Sydney's nightlife for a decade. As we say here, "Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater"...
Agreed this is exactly what I stated, but looks like the creator removed my original comment, Since it wasn't a comment appraising the Mayor, and how he's handling this. I've noticed that this creator has a lot of hate towards prostitution and sensors and blocks anyone who doesn't treat it as a crime. In my original comment I stated that the underage prostitution did not even occur in parque lleras or in the Poblado area it was in a smaller barrio. I don't understand why the mayor thought it was a good idea to ban short term airbnbs and add a curfew to tourist zones, that are already heavily policed. Seems like they're trying to get rid of tourist more than anything due to the Gentrification that the locals are complaining about.

The problem you mentioned goes directly linked with this. Most of those cases come from sex tourism spots and drug pots. Prostitution is technically illegal in the Philippines and Thailand and they still have entire streets and cities dedicated to it.
The supply and demand will always be there, but the mayor is trying to remove the marketplace from areas where regular, respectful people go.

I had dinner last night in La Provenza. We finished around 10:30pm. Curious to see Llares we walked down Calle 10 to the different entrances. There were lines to get past the barricades into the park and the Police were checking everyone's ID, male/female, Local/Tourist. Not wanting to wait we left. So its real

How do you expect our tourism to keep growing if families are approached by girls on the streets of a tourist spot? Y’all are seeing this from a tiny (a lil perv tbh) perspective. I understand going after the prostitutes but enforcing the clubs to close at 1 am will just destroy the tourism. Seems like dude don't want tourist there at all but just can't say it openly.

@@AKJoelI’ll explain it to you. All the poblado and la 70 areas (major party areas) always have been also commercial during daytime. That’s why we have designated after hour party zones near industrial areas such as aguacatala or estrella. The late trend of having Provenza open until 4, had affected the commerce of la 10 in the morning hours. Causing this to generate more clubs and less retail spots. This translates into more party, more sex, more pedos. That’s why focusing on la 10’s major commerce spots instead of clubs, will indeed, help mitigate sex tourism.

It should be the state's responsibility that orphan kids are not abused by the staff of the orphanage for example. Many times that's the case unfortunately.
Sorry, but the private sponsorship just by giving money doesn't work if the state and society is not creating control mechanisms in place to avoid abuse (mostly sexual) leaving children traumatized in their whole lives.

As someone who has a nonprofit here in Michigan that works to end child trafficking and exploitation, I am happy to hear of this. Hopefully it will continue. It makes me sick to my stomach when I hear of grown men and women, even parents, sexually exploiting minors. That is a lifetime of damage done to children. I donated! Closing restaurants etc in 2 touristic centers won’t solve the problem in anyway but just serve the government to show we are doing something
Problem will be shift to 2 blocks further to el centro with less police presence and unsafe for everyone
If they want to address such perverts they should have better preventive plans , more policy presence and background checks rather then punishing restaurants etc that is going to hurt economy and businesses
Your outrage is misguided unfortunately, these measures are going to hurt a lot of impoverished Colombian families that are struggling enough as is. The government here needs to make a more directed effort if they wish to actually solve this problem.

I’m noticing a shift towards a more conservative attitude toward seggs work across the board. Even here in Dallas the strip clubs use to close at 6am now they close at 2am. They are really struggling to stay open because we are already in a recession headed towards a depression. Plus they now have to compete with the bars whereas before people would do both in one night. A lot of the girls have been forced to leave the club or resort to literal prostitution rather than just dancing.
And it’s not just the clubs. Even the video and novelty stores have to close at 2 when they use to be 24/7. Prostitution has been illegal here but now they are definitely tightening up and making more arrest in areas that use to be less restricted.
It's sad that in a country like the US, those are their only 2 job opportunities :(

@@AKJoelThere are more job opportunities but inflation is out of control all over the world, with prostitution there's a high demand and the ladies set their prices which means when things get more expensive they can raise their prices to keep up with inflation unlike working as a 9-5 wage slave.

If you go to these high end restaurants and bars, a lot of the patrons are actually locals. Not everyone in Medellin is poor.

I would not be surprised if the restriction on the bars hours is reverse in a month, too much business will be lost by the bars for that restriction to be continued, a lot of tax money for the city will dry-up.

I'm from Medellin, been here my whole life and from my personal perspective the mayor, his cabinet and supporters are such a bunch of fools about his measures regarding sexual tourism here in Medellin. he's unnable to see the fact that repression leads to misery. Prostitution should be legal in Colombia, in a similar way that it is in Amsterdan as an instance, a Natural expression being regulated in the most armonious way at least that being what you should try to aim at, at least a bit of balance.
You never know what you are talking about… it’s still legal in the park I was there last night… the only differences now is the park and bars close at 1 am. If you drive into any barrio at night there will be 30-40 underage girls serving local Colombians EVERY NIGHT why is no one stopping that? All the mayor did was hurt the legitimate bar owners who actively keep young girls out.
It's not legal in the park. Read the articles I linked in the description, I don't just make up these stories for fun. But as I always say, laws and enforcement are ways apart in Colombia, so despite the regulations there was always a chance nothing was gonna change.

Will there be any restrictions imposed on visitors entering Airbnb, energy living etc ?! Never been a fan of risky street meat. I prefer to have the nights to myself visiting various bars in provenza etc. Maybe have a girl off social media around in the daytimes.

Many Airbnb owners already have rules stating no visitors, or visitors only allowed during certain times. I think the government may soon implement a law prohibiting Airbnb rentals less than 30 days, unless they're in buildings which are solely dedicated for short term rentals.

This is ban so disingenuous. It’s somewhat insulting to actual victims. You used the key word “Tourist Areas.” Where is the mention of El Centro? If this were about helping minors El Centro would be at the top of this list. If you go to Poblado the majority of the woman look over 18, around 95 percent. Also, you need an ID to get into Lleras, regardless, anyone can go there and see the vast majority of the women in that area look above 18. Contrast that with El Centro. If you go to El Centro (where there are no tourists and only locals) there are TONS of girls that look 12-14 it’s enough to make your stomach actually hurt. It’s COMMON in El Centro for girls to look underage. Where is the huge ban on El Centro?? If we’re here to save minors then why aren’t we talking about El Centro?? This isn’t helping minors; the areas you mentioned are mostly women over 18, the majority of underage girls working on the street are in the local area El Centro which wasn’t mentioned at all.

Dumb people think there is something wrong with consensual sexual activity. They have a puritanical and religiously ingrained, ascetic bias against nature, and human contact. They are still living in the dark ages of human connection. As Freud said, we are sexual creatures out the womb.

Nobody smart would think there is anything wrong with consensual human contact provided that health precautions are taken.

If you were on an island with someone you felt good with, and the feelings were mutual, you would never think it's wrong to restrict sensual touch to certain areas of the body. That's an insanity that religious society has imposed on to you and conditioned you to believe. There are islanders today who live fully in the nude, and the whole society participates only in consensual sexual activity, and they are happier and healthier than your entire country is.
Personally, I’m happy they’re doing that that entire area makes me have anxiety. I remember how it was 10 years ago but don’t forget this was started by the Colombians before Gringo ever came there and with the non-adult ones it’s very common in Colombian society for this to happen. I know this from firsthand conversations with friends that live there they need to tackle that problem as well. It’s much bigger but I’m glad they’re doing this. It’ll keep all those creep out of there.

That won't do anything at all except make it more comfortable for Colombians to have dinner in a better ambiance. It's just like New York cleaning up the streets and removing the homeless, but not actually solving the problem. What about la 70? How does this stop abuse of minors? What about not making the people of Colombia pay back employees for tiny mistakes at work when they are on a minimum wage, so they don't have to resort to other jobs, or better yet pay them a living wage? Of course these are complex social issues, which some call "wicked" problems. However this seems like policy theatre more than anything else.

The difference is that the guys being drugged and robbed bring it on themselves, by making hundreds of stupid decisions to get to that point. Children on the other hand, are innocent and need to be protected at all costs.

Just being completely honest... I think if you're 60 and your "girlfriend" is 20 - the locals will label you a sexpat. Other than that, I dont see how they'd have a problem with it.

@AKJoel 100% agree brother, the moment that some dude forget where he's at, he's gonna regret it, and I'm talking from a really really close experience.
The testing period is to assess possible losses (or gains) of tourism but also, give a chance to hurt some business owners (pubs/clubs etc) who promoted and benefited from the prostitution/clients symbiosis. Once these owners would realize their losses, they may think twice and be more inclined to do the policing themselves if they want to maximize their profits. I liked FICO in his first term and I like him even better now. He genuinely cares for the city and it's inhabitants.

maybe they are hoping that in 6 months it gives enough time for colombians and regular tourists to repopulate the park. you can see from how busy it is in provenza that there are enough decent people to fill the void. i will keep my fingers crossed that this will work better than the recent attempt when they put the barricades and id checking police., that did not seem to solve the problem

To me this is wonderful because banning sex work will have a ripple effect and make things safer for everyone. These guys that use prostuites also tend to do drugs and they are the same people who cause a lot of the crimes such as drugging and stealing so its a power move.
Most druggings happened form guys meeting women online, the p4p guys aren't really the ones getting drugged and robbed as much as the guys who are naive and looking for dates and love without doing their research on the dangers of Colombia.

This mayor is very intelligent, first stage of war, cut off supply routes. Stage 2, block off areas of operation and take control to push them back. Force them to use their other sources and flush those out. Eventually they will have them weakened and cornered. The 6 month ban is part of the strategy, also he mentioned the S workers can apply for monetary assistance during this time. Good way to start regulating and find out how many are out there and who, but not to control, possibly help protect. He may have a plan to where to relocate them and they can operate out of. Can get better policing and protection for them, just because theyre S workers doesnt mean they have to be treated like trash and have no rights. This can be a good thing over all for everyone involved.
