    Hey Donnie, Rough Rider actually have a Bowie called the Black Mule and it's next to nothing for you guys to buy in the States. It's a game changer for cheap Bowie's. True full tang with an overmold handle. Very like another Bowie you like and own😁

    Rough Rider's fixed blade quality has always been hit or miss which is odd cause their folders are usually at least solid. If you haven't already, give a peek to their Black Mule Bowie. For about $25 or so, but they did it right.

    I know a lot of people like stacked leather handles. The problem is, you never know what's going on inside that handle to the end cap. Frankly, I'm surprised the Rough Ryder hidden tang was a big as it was. I susoect if the knife was made out of carbon steel, it wouldnt have had a problem. All that said, I'll take a full tang knife over stacked keather always. It may be less comfortable, but you know it'll be strong, depending on the steel type.

    It's the combat Bowie with iwo jima on it bc the original design is the V44 used during ww2 by Marines as a Cross between a machete for terrain and a kabar for combat.

    I have a Rough Rider USMC Bowie RR749, which is pretty much the same as your RR1718 (except it has a USMC marked leather sheath.) I bought it at a swap meet for $35, and was thrilled to get it. It sits in a place of honor with some other USMC knives (mostly Ka-Bars.) There is no reason these couldn't have been made super strong even with the hidden tang, as the prototype (called the Union Cutlery 1219C2) was required to have 1/3 of the knife imbedded into a tree and a full grown man would stand on it without causing damage. Many many a Marine or Soldier would throw them and they were known for their toughness. But alas these Rough Riders were built for show, one day I'd love to build one that is as durable as the Ka-Bar fighting utility knife, or maybe even a tad stronger. It would have a market already in place...

    I don’t understand why people insist on judging a knife based on batoning. It’s ignorant. That isn’t what a knife is for, and even full tangs can break doing this. This knife would have never broken if used for it’s intended purpose (you know, cutting). There is nothing wrong with stick tangs either. Swords and knives were made like this for thousands of years, and they functioned just fine. Probably also had something to do with people using their tools properly.Fresh bone is easier to cut through than knotted wood. Anyone worth their salt that goes into the wilderness is going to at least have a hatchet, or an axe on them for wood. Maybe even a saw or a machete. Yet even those will still break if used incorrectly. We going to shit on guns next, because they suck at processing wild game?

    • @DonnieBAllDay
      @DonnieBAllDay  2 роки тому +1

      Correction; GOOD stick tangs work. A garbage heat treat or poor tempering will leave you with a snapped or bent tang any day of the week. Also, batoning is a form of cutting. If I swing a blade with all my might to chop a piece of wood, it can damage the knife at a greater probability than by batoning. When you baton, the angle is set and consistent, unlike a wild swing. Who do you think invented the technique? Survivalists have been doing it for thousands of years. Reduce the chance of edge chipping and dullung.

    Happy thanksgiving 🦃 brother I know you will turn a failure into a success .

  • @ballsflying
    @ballsflying 2 роки тому +1

    The location of the failure looks like powdered steel you say. That sound like an improper heat treatment. A coarse grain structure. Actually sad as the tang has enough material to be strong if treated properly.

    • @DonnieBAllDay
      @DonnieBAllDay  2 роки тому +1

      The edge held up which makes me believe they heat treat the blade, but not the tang

    • @ballsflying
      @ballsflying 2 роки тому +2

      @@DonnieBAllDay so actually that may have caused a stress crack. If treated properly the blade might have held up. I forge knives from Old files and rasps that can stand loads of abuse. Normalizing the steel will help also, heating up to orange and letting it cool of 3 times. Differential heat treating and keeping the spine of the knife at a blue colour will also make a very strong blade. Like your channel btw. 👍

    • @DonnieBAllDay

      The original Bowie was an all purpose blade. A defense blade first and foremost, but an important tool while on the trail. On horseback you don't bring everything with you. A camp roll, firearm, metal cup or pot, a flint and a knife. That knife was for fighting, firewood, hunting, fire starting and food prep.
