    Thanks for the videos. I'm a harley guy in Tennessee, but recently got a basket case 1968 atlas with 71 commando frame. Your videos are making my bike come together! It'll be the only Norton on the road I know of for miles around my area.

      Hope they help. I am more of a Harley guy myself. I hope to buy a wreck or basket case this year to rebuild. These Nortons are a different animal to work on for sure. Thx for watching.

    Pivots like the steering stem, swing arm pivot, etc. are better with regular non-synth, grease. Synth. grease doesn't keep water off the metal surfaces well, either - so more likely to rust. Actually, the best stuff I've used on suspension is mineral base front axle CV joint grease. It won't dry out, and keeps water off the metal like ATF does. My Honda's "Pro-Link" rear suspension pivots used to corrode and seize with synthetic grease, and then the hard chrome bushings would crack and split. I was buying all new bushes and pins every season. Switching to the CV grease solved that completely...and just in time - just before Honda discontinued all the parts.....

      This bike has the halo style. It was only used for 2 years on the Commandos. You will see it in the following videos.

    Hello, I was watching your video and I liked the idea of installing tapered roller bearing for this type of yoke. The Norton I am working on has the same type of lower yoke and I am thinking to do the same as you did but I have a few doubts though :
    -what part # of bearings did you install ? on my bike's frame, the part of the frame where the steering stem goes in, the lower ID is 52 mm x 18.8 mm width and the upper ID is 52 mm x 15 mm . is this right ?
    So, did you install 2 tapered roller bearings with dims 52 x 25 x 15 mm ? ( actually in the market I only found 52 x 25 x 16,25 mm...so the upper bearing will stand out for 1,25 mm ) and use the separator tube for centering or did you install a 52 x 25 x 18 mm in the lower position and a 52 x 25 x 16.25 in the upper position without the use of the separator tube ?
    best regards
    Tiberiu

      Its been quite a while since I did this but I am pretty sure it was 52x25x15 or it might have been standard 1"x 2"x 5/8" . Both bearings were the same. You don't need a spacer for the early Commandos 69/70 with the one piece lower yolk. I should have recorded that for the video. Thank you for watching, more videos coming soon.

    Darn, here I've been using synthetic grease specifically because I thought synthetic wouldn't dry out.

    • @MOAB
      @MOAB  7 років тому

      I thought the same for years than when I was replacing steering head bearings or forks 5 years later, it was dried out and clumpy. maybe because it is more exposed to the elements there. I'm trying something different here.

    looking for that dust seal... any idea what the part number would be?

    • @MOAB
      @MOAB  5 років тому

      No I don't have a part number, I just looked on ebay for something with the same diameter or close. The metal washer protects it pretty good.

      @@MOAB okay. im referring to the black seal i can see on the top and bottom of the neck. cant seem to find a part number for it or a reference to it anywhere. using tapered races and bearings as well and there is a little gap between the chrome dust seal and the neck. could I send you a picture of what I have going on?

    • @MOAB
      @MOAB  5 років тому

      @@iwbuck There is no reference or part number. Nortons never had tapered roller bearings. I just looked on Ebay and tried to find something close to the measurements, which i can't remember now.
