The amazing thing is how completely naturally Leslie Nielsen pulls of each and every oblivious comedic character he plays. You absolutely cannot tell that he's acting a part. It's so incredibly smooth. He truly was such a comic genius towards the last few decades of his life.
Leslie Nielson is one of the funniest men in TV or the movies. How he can do and say all those things with perfectly straight face is amazing to watch!
That's why his comic performances worked. He wasn't winking at the audience, letting them know he was in on the joke. He played it as if he was serious. And that's why it's funny.
Actually Birmingham has a great art museum. That county votes Dem every presidential election and George Wallace was livid in his hatred of Birmingham. It is NOT typical Alabama and is hated by the rural Whites in the state. The other good place is Huntsville, where NASA is. I used to be the economist for the AL legislature. I was disliked solely for being White and treating African Americans as equals. My early years were in NY and NJ until my father was transferred by AT&T. Unfortunately rural counties have most of the political power by far. They hate just for being moderate. I was in China 12 years and liked it better than Alabama. The blonde lady from SNL went to Auburn University. She is very smart but can play any role. Unfortunately the rural Whites in Alabama like Trump.
@@avecmoi9429 Don't get it twisted. The museum is great, but the city is just as racist and shitty as the rest of the state .... or the rest of the country. And plenty of middle class, urban and suburban "whites" vote Republican.

A lot of old comedy sketches don't seem to hold up that great over time. The context changes, the culture changes, so the humor changes. But this is still just so damn funny.
Partly through being lucky that game shows are still going on in much the same format they had in the '80s. A parody of a show like Moonlighting that no one really remembers wouldn't play so well now.
Yeah well, at the time it wasn't that funny. Sure, we chuckled at Nielsen and Lovitz, but it was just filler and we still kept asking ourselves why we even bothered to keep watching the show for so long after Eddie and Joe had left. The mid to late 80s were the dark times of SNL.
This is actually the dress rehearsal version. The version that aired live was a bit more sloppy, and while it was still funny, some of the jokes didn’t land as well. It takes good timing to make this kind of chaos work as comedy.
My family and I had the honor of meeting him on vacation in Hawaii years ago. He’s was so nice and kind to my mother who I think developed a small crush! Lol. Wonderful man 👍
Notice how well everyone played their parts. No obvious looking at cue cards. No deviating from the character. Talkin to you Sandler, Fallon, Myers, etc...
Adam Sandler has had an extensive movie career. Jimmy Fallon and Seth Myers are the long running hosts of talk shows. What exactly has Lovitz, Greenwald, and Jackson done in their careers besides SNL?
'Well, we all know what that sound means...Don Pardo, what does it mean?' 'I don't know, I've never heard it before' 'Well, it doesn't matter, on to the lightning round!'
Actually, you can. SNL has always used cue cards, because they're constantly making changes, even during the live show. The cast just used to be better at not making their cue card-reading obvious.
I think it has a great Monty Python, absurd nature, to it. But with American characters. Leslie serves up the crazy, and the others respond so heroically, to his Alice in Wonderland world.
I think Alex Trebek would have gotten a kick out of this - you know you're doing well when everybody knows who the parody show is about. RIP Alex and the great Leslie Nielsen.
They make it hard. I mean people complain that the original Star Wars has a few minutes of changes, but half of the '80s and '90s SNL content has no official release in any format. It's all out there on the internet unofficially if you dig a little though. The unofficial copies have gotten easier to find in the last year. Been enjoying Misery II, Tooncinator, The Real World with the eskimo, Brady Bunch vs. the Partridge Family and others recently.
Monster Trucks vs Funny Cars is extremely difficult to find. It was near the end of David Alan Grier’s episode (or James Vanderbeek?), and was an absurd and epic CGI parody of such events. It was made available briefly, for maybe a few months, and has disappeared once again - perhaps forever.
how to make an entertaining game show without ever having to pay any money to the contestants: arrest one, sabotage the other one, and do anything else that is needed.
usually these game shows are just character impersonations, which is funny, but i love how clever this was, and of course leslie nielson is the one to pull it off, the brilliant bumbling and clueless comedian.

At 0:28, you can see that Leslie's legs are severely bowed as he walks over to the contestants. He was brought up in Saskatchewan and he said he had rickets as a child because his diet wasn't varied enough. It was hard to get fresh fruit there, for example.
"It was a simple question, Ive wouldve gotten it. I mean Im the curator if an art museum"

The way they build up to someone finally saying "1492" is one of the most brilliantly-timed bits in all of SNL.

Keep it in your pants. The game show premise was worn out before this was written out and nothing special happens here. This is a totally basic bit.
