DOTS bro DOTS. Don't OverThink Shit! 🤣 Let the creative juices flow. That's how new ideas that end up being amazing are born, but never happen when trying to get a "type beat" type sound. As Navie said, you just get in your own way at that point and ended up mentally putting yourself down. That approach has never breeded the greats.
Isn't it crazy how simple this seems, yet in the moment your mind feels as though it NEEDS to worry about something or that the beat MUST be made a certain way? Hate getting in my own way.
one man's trash is another man's treasure, try not to overthink and save/release everything - hope y'all get a lot of sales/placements/collabs/beats/whatever it is that you do this year
Beatmaking and music production in general is a deceptively philosophical topic. It really does come down to personal motivation, discipline, and mindset. Solid breakdown here Navie. I spend a lot of time focusing on my production workflow... but not so much on my personal discipline / schedule. This made me rethink that a bit., I think a good balance of the two will lead to success.
I really needed to hear this lately, please do post more content like this in the future, the mental side of it is just as important as the technical part imo
Great advice man. I've personally just been trying to make a complete beat everyday, regardless of whether its good or not. Just going through the motions and actually finishing it rather than just ditching it because I don't like it. Its been helping me massively
Damn dude. I'm not a hip hop artist in particular cause I love making future bass stuff like illenium but I'm suffering from similar beat block syndrome. This really helped me out. Thanks man subbed for life now.
Man, I wish I had this advice a few years ago. My production channel suffered severely because of my beat block. I started doing something like this around 2019, going back to unfinished projects and finishing them up and now my niche channel is slowly getting there in views and support. Thanks for this video, as well as many of your videos that I've watched over the past couple of weeks!
I will never give up. I might not be fit to be a part of this whole story today, next month, next year, but boy i am having fun learning. Inch by inch, bit by bit, i will give my absolute best, and if i never make it, at least i know that i tried with all my might. It's cliche, but it works for me.
@@NavieD To add: i never considered myself to be talented in the first place. Nor do i think i am even now. I've just recently got into beat production and production in general. All songs i made i made with just the feeling what sounds good and what sounds bad. When i look back and when i look at my music now i can see a significant change in knowledge over matter. And that tells me that, with a lot more time and a lot more effort, in the future, i might improve even further and most importantly i don't see myself hitting my limits yet, not even close. I constantly have that subtle feeling that i can improve.
Another technique i use is finishing my beats even if they are trash. Sometimes all I have is a drum loop, so I lay down the whole track... intro, bridges, choruses, verses outro made up of just sums. Then come back later and try to add melodies, chords, etc even if they suck. Then I render it and give it a proper name and archive it
This is very true, especially the fact that in order to build a repertoire of good beats, you have to make a bigger collection of bad beats. I learned this myself when I started, and I don't sweat the bad beats. I just keep doing what I love to do and that's enough to motivate me to keep doing it and hopefully improve with experience, advice and time. I, and others appreciate your videos and your advice man.
So I was suffering from the same problem I was making 3 beats in 6 months or so becoz I was chasing perfection ( even though all of the beats are trash ) and for that reason I wasn't productive enough...….. So I started as a challenge to make a beat a day and upload it on UA-cam just to keep an account of my beats ….. And here I realized that I have learnt more things in this month than whole 6 months … even though I am making trash beats everyday but those are improving pretty significantly...….. I think the only way to beat block is to show up everyday or something like that...… btw thanks Navie gave a whole new prospective on the topic ….
Great video man! This is a struggle that I have all the time. Which then creates doubts and insecurities. When I have beat block. I just go at it the next day with a different mindset and that is "to have fun". Works everytime!
Good advice! Don't push yourself too hard, guys. For most of us producing is fun and not a career. Take a break, come back later to it with a clear head.
Yeah, it's hard to balance the perspectives because this advice is somewhat for people who want to take things more seriously and maybe pursue this as a career. But yeah, if it's just a hobby, I would say this advice doesn't apply as much since the outcome of making good beats isn't as important comparatively speaking
@@NavieD yeah, right. You need some routine, if you plan to do it professionally. From that perspective it's an advantage to get your (daily or weekly) goals straight. Great video setting btw. Got some "we need to talk" vibe 😁
Naive, as someone who is trying to relearn and master an old craft of mine after a 10 year hiatus. I have found it to be extremely more daunting and confusing and frustrating than it was for me 10 years ago. It is like only being able to remember 1/2 of the quadratic formula, i know most of the elements but cant get the right structure or order down. I gotta say that the knowledge you put in these videos are things people thousands of dollars for at schools focused on music production. If anyone really pays close attention they can pick up that a lot of what you say is not strictly FL studio bound. The way you explain concepts and ideas and fundamentals without being to clickbait(y) in your titles or just throwing a stream up but calling it a "How To XYZ" is so appreciated and you have quickly become my go to favorite producer to learn from. Its a shame you only have 40k subscribers but i cant tell that you have bigger plans and short term adsense $$ isnt what is driving you. Haven’t been able to make a beat I like since last March when COVID hit. I can see now that it’s because I went from producing daily to picking it up maybe once a month. Also have put a lot of pressure on myself after getting 2 of my beats featured on an album. Thanks for the vid.
Been going through this lately, unmotivated, beat blocks. I'm just tired man. Also coupled with the fact that I've never sold a beat before lol maybe I'm in the wrong environment. Man smh
Sorry to hear it man. It can be tough to be motivated if you are tying your action to a desired end-goal. Cuz it can be devastating when you don't achieve that end-goal for some time. This is why using systems is better than using goals. "Goal-oriented people exist in a state of continuous presuccess failure at best, and permanent failure at worst if things never work out. Systems people succeed every time they apply their systems, in a sense that they did what they intended to do. The goals people are fighting the feeling of discouragement at each turn. The systems people are feeling good at every time they apply their system.”
We just need a place where we can share and get constructive feedback on our music. There is soundcloud and things like that but Im talking about for ideas that aren't fully fleshed out.
I been making beats off and on since FL Studio 5.. many, many times I have been like, F it.. hence the 'off and on' situation lol. Practice really does make perfect, eventually. "What matters more is showing up everyday and putting in the time. In the long term the rest will sort itself out. A library of good beats is build by creating even larger library of bad beats. So if I built a bad beat today - that's fine. I'm still doing exactly what I need to be doing. Personally what I do is I just set a minimum amount of hours that I need to work a day - that's it, that's all. If good idea shows up - great. If nothing but bad idea show up in that time and I make nothing but trash - great. My day is still considered a success and I feel equally good about it as long as I show up." This completely transformed my mindset and made it much clearer about what is really important and I finally have a solid framework of how to plan. Thank you very much for that Navie D!
@@NavieD I have no doubt about that! I can relate so much to this what you saying I’m going through this right now, I’m thinking everything I make sounds the same or is not good enough so I scrap every new project and I’m so demotivated. I need get over this thanks Navie for vid I’m still fallowing you’re great content. Keep it up be safe !
Think you could apply this to most crafts. Athletes understand this well and train each day even after bad days. If it's photoshop, just applying one new idea will be valuable in the long run. Quantity over quality can actually be good. Great vid as always.
Very helpful thanks! Something else that might help, I put down hours where I have to work and hours where I can work OR choose to chill out, which, for me, keeps creativity higher!
That's great advice, and something that I probably struggle with as of right now. It is really easy for me to work sunrise until sunset, so creating boundaries is something I am trying to get better at since I want more balance.
@@NavieD Thank you. I always feel like when I do that although I'm spending more time working, I'm getting equally or even less done than when I plan for some balance! Hope it helps :)
as we used to say in a previous job where i had to create every day, sometimes santa claus just doesn't show up. but he might come tomorrow, so you better be back as your desk.
Great advice as always Navie. Consistency of effort is really a win in and of itself. Sometimes I feel like I am remaking the same beat over and over again.
As long as you're learning, that's what matters more. If it feels like you are stagnant and are going through a "routine" making the same beat over and over, I would advise pushing yourself into new territories. Most likely, you will fail and it won't sound good at first. But that's how you learn, but putting yourself into the unknown.
Man. I'm in my first year, and while I've made a decent amount of progress since starting , I'm hitting a wall where I feel like I'm always over thinking before I sit down and try to make something. Very discouraging, and its been harder to enjoy the process because of how critical I've been on myself
Same approach as in poker. You can't control whether you win or lose, but if you're a good player, just putting in the hours, the profits come your way in the long run
Yo , i just figured that out for my self couple of days ago . Don´t put yourself under pressure , or else it doesnt make fun ! Btw thanks for the drumkit ! :P
Thank you boss! I got some real stinkers that I have on the shelf which will be released soon because I am busy with my course, so I wouldn't speak too soon!
Learning this can be just as much of a skill as actual beatmaking. Not beating yourself up when things go back is one of the most helpful things I have trained myself to do
Love your stuff @Navie D. ! Too mucgh respect for you. Thank you for this video, it's very reassuring to know that someone who is an absolute legend at music production, struggled in the beginning as well. Also you respond to people's comments, so much appreciated from all of us
This happened to me and beat block lasted for months. I couldn't do anything good. Then I realised I never used samples After 600 beats, I started sampling for a year and beat block never came again Sample. it really widens your creativity
Sounds like you were just in need of some novel stimulation. You're like me, I need to make different types of beats constantly. The idea of making the same type of beat day in day out sounds like a job
This is wonderful... thank you. In this vein, I couldn't recommend the book "The War of Art" by Steven Pressfield enough, for every creator, in every field.
@@NavieD Wonderful... I just picked up 'Do the Work' but haven't delved in yet. This might be a stretch so Im not going to over-explain it, but I'd also like to recommend a book called 'Awareness' by Anthony De Mello. For me personally it resonated in a similar way, a bit more spiritual though (FYI I ain’t religious). Again, thank you for the energy you put out there.
it just pisses me of, that i hear a lot of those simple fire beats from all those great artists but can't make a simple beat - everything sounds trash to me... i just want to make something something thats cool and easy and where stuff actually works but it was never like that. smh
Wow nav you nailed this bro. Thank for this sound advice. What's the first thing a person should work on if they never have made a trap beat before but wants to start and doesnt know where to begin in terms of arrangement and sound selection??
Thanks Shawn! I would advise you to not worry about arranging it into an entire beat at first. Just learn how to put a basic loop together that sounds good. That should be step 1 in my opinion.
@@NavieD solid. I'm gonna be working on that the the rest of the week. I work overnight so when I get home I'm drained but I at least try to put 2 hours in on my ableton software before I really get tired but this took a load off going forward thanks alot man👍
@@NavieD I aim at improving music production. I had a couple of questions 1. It's better to focus at a single genre right especially in the beginning? Instead of try to learn a bunch of them 2. I find it hard figuring how to select the right sounds and create the exact same sounds and setting the right balance of frequencies as any reference track. Am I better off trying to follow FL Studio demo projects and other FL projects and templates? 3. All the mixing and mastering engineers say the track was already well produced, they only work on high grade rough mixes. How do I improve my productions?
Great timing! Im on my second week of just looking at my computer with no enthusiasm. Because i know the beat will sound bad later. Maybe this will work 🙏

What I like to do is stick with “bad” ideas for a while and sometimes they turn out amazing
Some of the best content on youtube. Once again thank you for all you do! Gotta bump up those likes again!!!
Thank you my LOLing friend.
Me: Cant make good beats
navie: I give u help my friend

@@NavieD lol idk if youre being sarcastic too 😂
That's what I do. Thank you for boosting my confidence Mr. Navied.
You are welcome young Soum
@@NavieD Haha. Young, I am not. Thanks for your videos and advices.
Think you could apply this to most crafts. Athletes understand this well and train each day even after bad days. If it's photoshop, just applying one new idea will be valuable in the long run. Quantity over quality can actually be good. Great vid as always.
Quantity to get to quality is something that I heard recently that stuck in my brain
Big Brother Navie. I needed these wise words. God Bless🙏
Glad I can impart these words onto you boss
as we used to say in a previous job where i had to create every day, sometimes santa claus just doesn't show up. but he might come tomorrow, so you better be back as your desk.
You are doing gods work for the future upcoming producers
Thank you! I've been going through this phase. This not only applies to beatmaking but life itself :)
True. Tying your happiness to a specific outcome can be troublesome
Thanks for this advice! Currently, in the "beat block" phase. Going to try this :)
Thanks for tweeting about this my mans!
You wrapped it from everything ..
Navie man 🌹 .. you helped bro !
Thank you for watching once again Al!
Love this take on beat block,Really needed to hear this today so thank you Navie
You're welcome Sorrie!
Great advice as always Navie. Consistency of effort is really a win
in and of itself.
@@NavieD I totally agree, have to throw myself into the unknown and explore new territory.
Exactly what I needed to hear right now!
👌 glad I was able to deliver it
Man. I'm in my first year, and while I've made a decent amount of progress since starting , I'm hitting a wall where I feel like I'm always over thinking before I sit down and try to make something. Very discouraging, and its been harder to enjoy the process because of how critical I've been on myself
I am sorry to hear that man. That does sound discouraging
Same approach as in poker. You can't control whether you win or lose, but if you're a good player, just putting in the hours, the profits come your way in the long run
Good message.. I needed that today...
That is actually really helpful. Great vid Navie
Thanks Hydra!
I've been going through this lately especially after starting to learn drill beats, this helps a lot thanks man
Yo , i just figured that out for my self couple of days ago . Don´t put yourself under pressure , or else it doesnt make fun ! Btw thanks for the drumkit ! :P
Thanks for the motivation bro, this is heavy
Exactly where im at, thanks for the vid
You are welcome HUUUUU!
Another great video. This advice is actually applicable to more than just beatmaking!
True, it's something that I keep in mind all the time. Trying not to tie my mood to outcomes
this man never misses
Thank you boss! I got some real stinkers that I have on the shelf which will be released soon because I am busy with my course, so I wouldn't speak too soon!
I'm watching this video again!! I so needed to see this
Hahah glad you were able to get something out of it Ricardo!
Thank you for your transparency! Very encouraging 😎👍🏾
You're welcome Dre! I like making videos like this, glad you liked it too
Love it, change my view in a lot of things
👌 hopefully this actually helps!
Dude. This is exactly what I needed to hear today. Thank you. You got yourself a new sub.
Glad to have you on board Davieboy!
I really needed to hear this. Thank you for this video!
You're welcome Sacchetti!
This video helped me a lot, thank you!
Im about to chuck my pc out the window
Hahaha this is probably not the best solution
Man i dont even make beats and this just helped me in my own way. Thank you 🙏🏾
Hahah glad I can help. How did you find my channel if you don't make beats?
Great tips bruv 👌🏽
Thank you young Raffy
This is really helpful bc i im honestly having a major beat block rn where even the thought of making a melody gives me a headache 🤕
Yep that anxiety can be crippling
@@NavieD update: i just attempted making another melody and it turned out fire :D
Yeah buddy!!! You speaking truth glad u can relate 👍🏽💯
I hope my sweater revealed my arm muscles adequately to make you proud Titan
@@NavieD lmfaooo i was thinking the same thing bro haaaahaaa
This is some amazing advice right here. I was nodding my head in agreement w everything you said
I've needed this video for awhile.
I hope it helped Nick!
I save youtube videos in my playlists and this one went into the fruityloops and the motivation playlist . I appreciate you 🔥

Omg this is so much me!!!!
words cant describe how much I appreciate this video!!
This is exactly what I'm looking for!!!! Stop judging yourself!
Also you respond to people's comments, so much appreciated from all of us
Hahah thank you Sebastian! I don't know if I would agree about the legend part, but I definitely did go through all of this. I am no different
@@NavieD haha def a legend! Appreciate the humility. Don't see that too much these days
I love the mindset videos. Very unique.
Thank you Grautdawg. I enjoy making these kinds of videos, it's nice to see others like watching them
for like a split second i actually thought you got an IBM sponsorship for this video
ollol yeah I got the same feeling when I edited it. But I kept it in anyways
Really inspiring thanks you. Real knowledge.
Thank you Kyle!
@@NavieD no problem, you are my go to guy for any info on beat making. Always help me figure out where I'm going wrong. lol
Great advice, it makes sense. I think I'll give it a try. Thank you.
Thank you Jakooooooooooooooooo
Didn't have to come at me like that with the title of this video :(
Fr tho, you opened up a new perspective with this video. Thanks brother.
You're welcome BXNER! These little ideas have stuck in my head for years, thought I would share them
@@NavieD HAHAHAH DID YOU JUST CALL ME BONER bruh im dead
Thank you so much for that, it does come help a lot🙏🏼🙏🏼
Glad I can help you Yusuf!
This happened to me and beat block lasted for months.
I couldn't do anything good.
Then I realised I never used samples
After 600 beats, I started sampling for a year and beat block never came again
Sample. it really widens your creativity
Facts! Using Loops / Samples can be a good alternative to beat block
Sounds like you were just in need of some novel stimulation. You're like me, I need to make different types of beats constantly. The idea of making the same type of beat day in day out sounds like a job
@@NavieD Exactly. I got so many styles now. I can do bunch of types which is pretty enjoying
Thanks again for the inspiration and tips my friend 🤙🏼
You are welcome my love
This is wonderful... thank you.
In this vein, I couldn't recommend the book "The War of Art" by Steven Pressfield enough, for every creator, in every field.
Yep, I stumbled upon that book early on in my beatmaking career. So glad that I did, the things in that book have been my guiding principles
Best advice I've heard all day, or all year if I'm being honest 👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾
thank you. it feels good to hear something like this
Glad I can help Caddy
Thank you so much Navie ✊ great video!
Thanks Noreki! Glad you liked it
Very good advice! Thanks 🙏
You're welcome Opyiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
You have helped so many producers. ❤️
Glad to be of service!
it just pisses me of, that i hear a lot of those simple fire beats from all those great artists but can't make a simple beat - everything sounds trash to me... i just want to make something something thats cool and easy and where stuff actually works but it was never like that. smh
Dude I’m in the same boat as you. How’s the music going now?
Your channel is pure gold💯 keep it up
Big Al! Thank you man
This was really helpful Preciate it 💯‼️
Glad I could be of help Birddddddd
this is exactly what I needed
Wow nav you nailed this bro. Thank for this sound advice. What's the first thing a person should work on if they never have made a trap beat before but wants to start and doesnt know where to begin in terms of arrangement and sound selection??
Thanks Shawn! I would advise you to not worry about arranging it into an entire beat at first. Just learn how to put a basic loop together that sounds good. That should be step 1 in my opinion.
@@NavieD solid. I'm gonna be working on that the the rest of the week. I work overnight so when I get home I'm drained but I at least try to put 2 hours in on my ableton software before I really get tired but this took a load off going forward thanks alot man👍
You are such a frank person 😊. Appreciated.
Indeed I am, I don't like beating around the bush
@@NavieD I aim at improving music production. I had a couple of questions 1. It's better to focus at a single genre right especially in the beginning? Instead of try to learn a bunch of them
Bro thank you so much! I on this beat block this help so much thank you!
You're welcome K2M! I hope it helped
Great timing! Im on my second week of just looking at my computer with no enthusiasm. Because i know the beat will sound bad later. Maybe this will work 🙏
I hope it does!
