I loved my mother with all my heart but I don't think she felt the same. She was a lot like this woman. Completely and totally emotionally unavailable.
My mom is the exact same. She does not believe in mental health in regards to herself. As an adult i went no contact for a couple years. Once i was ready we slowly started talking again. I've learned she wont change and if i want a relationship with her, i have to literally ignore the bad/ mean behavior
Well my father is like that . But it gets worse he's not just emotionally unavailable he is mentally abusive. He'd come to a calm home & start verbally abusing people close to you & taunting you , if you end up reacting he'd remind you whose house you live in . And all that when my mother has a job & contributes too & she's the one that looked after me all my life in every way . Can't imagine how worse it would be if he was the sole earner . When he's ill or has any problems everyone must tend to him . When someone else is ill it's an inconvenience for him . Would call everyone mad when he's the one acting up most of the times & agitating others . These kind of people will suck your life force till they live . They don't appreciate what they have . You must be perfect & successful at all times . If you are not he's unable to brag about it .I'm convinced the only way to save yourself from such people is to run far far away from them .

I dont think you guys understood Olive's character at all. It's chronic depression and it's hidden her case. There's a point during it, that becomes so unbearable that you become bitter, rude to everyone else , even to your family, you can't even stand yourself alone. It's shown in her ways of taking full care of her husband when she can just divorce, appreciating him in his most vulnerable state in his life (remember, a true person's colours are shown when you notice how they treat you when they don't need you for anything at all), also shown in the part where she just exists because her dog was depending on her, otherwise she would've off'd herself long ago. It's a misunderstood character. A pity.
Edit: just noticed the description, i wrote all the above without knowing there's an author who already says she has chronic depression. I wanted to add that the author pictured the life of someone living with chronic depression perfectly. I have never seen anything more accurate.

Very well said. Sadly for people like Olive they think because they’re not a physically abusive drunk like one or both of their parents, that means they’re a good parent to their own kids. We have all heard parents like this go “you think I’m so mean and you have it so hard, my dad only talked to me when he was drunk and yelling while beating us”
They’re very hardened people, and in a way it’s not their fault.
I am so thankful to my mother. Her parents were awful to her and unlike her sister, she broke that cycle. She was kind, funny, smart, and giving to a fault. Sadly life isn’t fair and we lost her at only 44 while her own mother sat “stoically” in the front row, never cried one tear. She’s gone now too, I would say resting in peace but we all know there’s no rest for the wicked!

I understood the character and I also understand what it’s like to be severely depressed.
Her character wasn’t unlikable because she was depressed. She was unlikable because she did absolutely nothing to try and fix the problem.
When people around you care about you, they will put up with a lot. It’s your responsibility to attempt to accept the situation and try to better yourself.
When I hit rock bottom, I took some time to realize how I was creating hell for myself and everyone around me. It’s easy to hide your suffering when your line of work is teaching, children bring genuine happiness.
People will tolerate you if you recognize the problem and try to fix it. As someone who has been through it, I become infuriated if people choose to forever wallow in self pity.
She wasn’t an “abusive drunk” but it would almost make it easier to deal with because you could blame the booze and”sickness.”
She was an emotional train wreck who emotionally abused others by her presence alone. Assaulting her grown up son and crying at the dinner table in front of guest isn’t “normal.” But everyone around her was too afraid of agitating her. Aka (perhaps unintentional but probably not) emotional abuse.
Depression is a reason, not an excuse. Being “stoic” just means you’re an uptight asshole who buries their feelings. She just wasn’t a very good person.
So this is about a man who doesn’t try to understand his own wife’s depression but goes a long way to care for another young woman’s grief, and in result, his wife gets even more unhappy.
False. He understands it perfectly. Everything he did shows he understands it. He stays with her and doesn’t get upset at her whenever she’s being unbearable. And ur not thinking about the time period when this takes place.
What I find most egregious about people is that ppl always expect the “mentally, emotionally & often healthier” person to always “understand” the other. My parents and I got into this when I was in my 20s bc of my sisters chronic depression/manic disorder. It was always “be nice, understand her, be patient,” bc she can’t help it. They coddled her and excused her abhorrent behavior. There were times I wish she’d follow thru with her threats. I told them that everyone always uses her mental issue as an excuse for her to be abusive and the people who suffer around her are consistently getting hurt. I was consistently left behind, not paid attention to even tho I had been the perfect child. I did what the son did. Not once did my sister nor my parents stop to think about the issues that I was having. Like being racially bullied at school. I left my home at 15 and never asked for anything. In college, my $600 Bio book/lab were stolen. I called them for the 1st time & asked them for $ to help me buy another but again, they’d just given my sister rent and a car bc she has an illness.
My point is, ur blaming the husband who clearly tolerated and loved her when no one else could even stand her yet u don’t think about how much loneliness he suffered and grief he went thru alone bc she was always depressed. She knew her parents had history of depression and yet she did nothing about it. She also had an affair yet u blame him bc a complete opposite person comes into his life and made him feel special for once. Not even sexually. I watched the series and he wanted so bad just to be liked. Olive never tried.
I will NEVER be in a relationship with a person who thinks loving someone thru thick and thin, sickness and health equates that to: I can get fat or lazy or do drugs or jobless or depressed for as long as I want and if u don’t stay- u never loved me. My life minutes the matter too, No. If u love someone, both have to try. Olive only tried when he couldn’t do anything. He was super depressed when he died.

I also don’t think the wife in this movie was that spoilt as I see her keeping her silence, she did make a few mistakes but who doesn’t? I didn’t think she used her depression as a weapon to anyone. On the other hand, the other young woman in grief was overwhelmingly emotional, yes, she was grieving, but it looked like she was a bit over the top. People often forget every one in the family is human just because they’re your mum or dad or a sister, and what are family for? To be there for each other. I saw plenty of scenes of the husband guy coddling the young widow, but not so much for his own wife. If you can coddle a stranger like that, why not your own wife? And yes, he did stay. Did he stay for his wife? Or was it for both of them? I’ve been married for 21 years, and if there’s one thing I learned, marriage isn’t one way. I couldn’t stay with a man who’d care for a complete stranger and decides to ignore my, or our problem. If one of two is unhappy, that becomes a problem for both in marriage.
Olive had a chronic depression because she was never grateful to her good husband and son. She'd believed that she would only be happy with her lover and no one else. She threw all her hate, disgust, contempt at her family because she felt like she deprived herself of her own happiness because of them.
For me, my sympathy goes to the good husband and son that were both maltreated by Olive who only loved her lover more than them.

I see your point completely, and I’ve certainly distanced myself from people like that, but as I get older, I’m understanding that people who seem to be really comfortable being rude, blunt, or even mean often have extremely miserable lives. And in this case, it’s clearly showing a case of chronic depression, I liked that this movie didn’t solve anything or that it glorified or justified her behavior. She suffered for her actions immediately and completely. But it’s just a portrait of someone with a chemical imbalance leading to severe chronic depression.

So thankful to my mother for breaking that cycle, her sister wasn’t able to, but I’m happy to say her daughter/my cousin did❤ Very proud of them, it’s a very are cycle to break. To be a loving, respectful, nonjudgmental parent that you never had.

I appreciate this movie. It makes you think about things. How people suffer, how we make ourselves suffer, many times for absolutely no reason. We arent here for long and theres so much to see, i hope we can see the goodness of life and not waste our precious days away

Gosh this was so depressing mainly because this is real life not sci fiction. This was set at a time before the term postpartum depression was known & women were left to fend for themselves or called "hysterical"!!! Nowadays we can all relate to her because we all either face or know people struggling with MH issues

I suffer from bipolar disorder and I have some hallucinations when I get too manic. My mania causes me to stay awake for 4-7 days and I’ll see what looks like television static all over, or ants marching in line. I remember seeing this movie and thinking about how much worse my condition could be. And I worry that it’s going to get bad like these people.

Being true to yourself is one of the worst advice in life.
Mental health is such a draining thing to deal with. You can very easily be swept away by your brain. Developing proper coping skills is very important. If you suffer from delusions journaling can be helpful. If you suffer from hallucinations investing in a pet can help ease anxiety and determine what is real or not. Local counties should have a government run facility if you are in need of help.
I first got help with my local clinic as well. Easier than using a doctor where sometimes you need a referral.
