Born in DC, lived in Maryland all my life and HELL NO I would not ever swim in the tidal Potomac. Below dam 1 the river is tidal and I have caught several Bull Sharks in the lower Potomac during hot summers. From Harper's Ferry west it's much cleaner and safer for swimming, boating and other water activities. Take my word for it, between 8 and 12 people a year die in the lower section of the river. Plus it's still polluted as all get out down there. I won't even eat fish I catch from the Potomac.

Much of the Potomac River has dangerous currents, and entrapment hazards like hidden tree branches, rocks, and fishing line. Many people drown in the Potomac River each year. So regardless of the water quality, please don't swim in the Potomac River.
When your skin starts melting off you'll know then you shouldn't have gone swimming in the Potomac any where downstream from Harper's Ferry to the Bay ...
I still wouldn't get in that water! I don't care what they say! I 'll continue to go to the pool and geez these reporters are so obnoxious.

Stay away from great falls dangerous waters. Swift and deadly currents. Many people lose there life there every year
