Hey Odin a good way to make wood grain texture is by using a not using a not so expensive paint brush cutting it bristles in sections or wood grain textured roller.
You could scale those down and use them at Helloween to hand out candy, unless you have a lot of kids coming by, in which case you can keep them full scale. I made an EVA foam pumpkin a couple years ago to store candy in, I still have it and will use it every year.
Odin you need to understand that you could make anything. ANYTHING and I’d still watch it and love every second of it. I’m certain thousands of people would agree.
I had the same thoughts. I couldn’t find anyone who made his hammer that looked close enough. I’m definitely someone who cares a little more about accuracy but that’s for my own costumes.

Very fun Odin. Hopefully after the family is done you can have the DK barrel decorate the backdrop of your set and if you wanted to you could make and OM for Odin Makes and place that on the barrel to sit in the background.

I liked the video as soon as I saw the intro. Also, I think with simple pvc frame/insert for stability, these would be a great way to store prop/foam weapons for any nerd cave.

Second, the link was shared because we have a DK barrel we use for conventions--it's hollow so instead of a backpack, it's what holds all of our supplies and purchases. We joke that the barrel itself is more famous than us and thus now there are photo ops with the barrel and stickers for anyone who gets to pose with it.
Love the work, per usual, Odin. You never cease to amaze and entertain. I'm sure you're already aware, but there are rubber paint roller inserts that have a faux woodgrain texture molded onto them, so when you make one long smooth roll, it applies a very realistic woodgrain pattern with paint. Not sure if it's something that works well with foam, though. Just a thought. Keep up the awesome work, and thank you for the content!
I thought about them briefly, and I wondered how well they would work on a curved surface? Then completely forgot about them when I ran to the hardware store!
I wonder if you could add a wood grain to the foam using the laser cutter/engraver. Probably not needed for this prop since it's from a low-poly/res game anyway.
the timing of these is awesome! I have 2 small barrels I was going to turn into DK barrels and wasn't sure how I was going to do the DK. thanks for the vid Oden, it was amazing as always
I added my files for the DK logo into the link for the free pattern. One is a .svg file, you can open it with a free program called Inkscape. The other is the Lightburn file for laser cutting. It is sized to be cut from a full sheet of 9" x 18" 2mm craft foam. I didn't even paint mine, just cut from the correct color of foam.

I love the edges on the foam when it’s laser cut! So clean and nice 😋 super cool outcome Odin! Did you think about making some small shadows around the bands? Maybe just with a black wash.. could give it more dimension.. 👍
I thought about it, I realize I could probably sponge paint some shadows around the bands. But I didn't see that coloration on any new barrel pictures I looked at!
Speaking of paper-mache. Someone mentioned using this at Halloween. One thing would be cool would be to make a DK Barrel Pinata for a party and when the kids bust it open in addition to candy and goodies, a lot of Nintendo-related merch could fall out like stuffed-toys, Pok'e'mon card packs, maybe a game or two.
You could make a DK head and wear it as a hat to accompany the barrel, maybe have the mouth open like the Mecha Godzilla head? Idk it would be funny though
Do you have to take any precautions lazer cutting the foam? I noticed some smoke popping out the bottom so I wasn't sure if it was something you have to be careful about.
Yes you do! The light from the laser is harmful to your eyes, like the light from welding. Super high UV. I am wearing glasses that filter the light so it's safe to look. And the smoke is the vaporized foam or burnt wood. I have a vapor mask on, and exhaust fans in my shop. I plan to make a smoke capture device in the future. My S10 still needs a permanent home in my shop so I can set it up.
We can now say that Odin has a Barrel in his soul!(Legend of Mana reference, sorry not sorry XD) Really fun and neat solution to make something for your family while also finding a way to incorporate it for your channel, and always you are a joy to watch make things.
The paint job came out great. I always would run into that problem when im making a painting, especially if i use watercolors. I always tell my self if it looks bad thats just cause its not done yet

Awesome build . I loved playing donkey Kong with Mario as a kid ( before I knew it was Mario ) back in the early 80's on the colecovision game system ( yeah I'm an school gamer) before Nintendo Mario ever came out
I just thought of something the barrel trick made me think of Mario's little green tunnel or pipe that he goes down to you could try making that it's all green it'll be cool

Glad I could help! I will put the DK file I made in with the pattern right now. It would be easy to cut out by hand.

Ah, back to familiar eva floor mat foam. AWESOME! Like a comfy pair of worn slippers! These could also be used for a Pirate Halloween display.

I would have put a flat foam circle in the middle of the foam barrel for under support could have rolled and formed the outer foam around that
