  • Utah’s football program has experienced significant growth and success since joining the Pac-12 in 2011. Now, as a member of the Big 12, Utah enjoys competitive play and increased visibility. However, if the Big Ten extended an offer, the appeal would be considerable, prompting Utah to seriously consider making the move.
    Prestige and Tradition
The Big Ten is one of the most prestigious and historic conferences in college athletics. Its member schools boast rich traditions, storied rivalries, and a strong academic reputation. Joining the Big Ten would align Utah with some of the most esteemed institutions in the country, enhancing the university’s academic and athletic brand. The prestige associated with being part of the Big Ten is a significant draw for any school.
    Financial Benefits
The Big Ten has one of the most lucrative media rights deals in college sports, providing substantial revenue to its member schools. By moving to the Big Ten, Utah would gain access to greater financial resources. These additional funds could be invested in facilities, recruiting, and overall program development, further elevating Utah’s athletic programs. The financial stability offered by the Big Ten's revenue-sharing model would be a significant advantage over the Big 12.
    Competitive Advantage
Competing in the Big Ten would present new challenges and opportunities for Utah. The conference is known for its high level of competition, with multiple teams consistently ranked among the top in the nation. While this would raise the bar for Utah, it would also provide the program with a platform to showcase its capabilities against some of the best teams in college football. The increased competition would likely attract top recruits, eager to play in one of the nation’s premier conferences.
    Geographic Considerations
While the Big 12 offers regional rivalries and a strong competitive environment, the geographic alignment with the Big Ten could be advantageous. The Big Ten's expansion into new markets has demonstrated a willingness to create a more national footprint. Utah's inclusion would add to this diversity, providing a bridge to the western United States and enhancing the conference’s overall reach.
    Long-Term Stability
The Big Ten's stability and long-term vision make it an attractive option. The conference has shown resilience in navigating the shifting landscape of college athletics, maintaining its position as a powerhouse. For Utah, joining such a stable and forward-thinking conference would provide long-term security and opportunities for growth.
    Conclusion
In conclusion, if the Big Ten offered Utah a spot, the combination of prestige, financial benefits, competitive opportunities, geographic considerations, and long-term stability would be compelling reasons for Utah to leave the Big 12. The move would position Utah among the elite programs in college athletics, ensuring its continued growth and success.

Who knows what the college football conferences will look like in 5 years but I think we can all agree that the Big10 and the SEC will decide the final product. Doesn't matter how good or bad Utah would be in the B1G. Their market is tiny so they wouldn't bring any real market value to the conference. If USC and UCLA stayed in the PAC a TV contract could have possibly been made for about $50M. Since both were leaving the PAC laughed at for asking a price they weren't worth. BYU asked to join the PAC when this was happening and they were told no. BYU has a bigger market value than Utah. That's one of the main reasons the Big 12 was able to get about $35M in TV revenue for each program. ESPN was willing to $35M to each PAC member, but they wanted $50M. ESPN laughed at that and completely withdrew their offer. ESPN was willing to negotiate for less than $35M a program. I believe it was for about $25M a program on the top end, much closer price to what the remaining 10 programs were actually worth. So Utah isn't worth the $65M to $70M B1G teams are getting annually, minus UO and UW.
