- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - 1998 United States Figure Skating Championships, Ladies' Short Program - First, a look back at the 1997 competitions with interviews with Tara Lipinski and Michelle Kwan. Then, it's Tara's Short Program, where a fall on the triple flip has her in 4th place after this skate.
The best thing about Tara winning the Olympics was she moved on and we weren't subjected to her inevitable decline in the sport.
Without a kid's body and weight, Tara couldn't make any triple triple combo.
Tara retired because she grew up and everything changed.

Well..... Tara had a woman's breasts and buttocks , her body transferred total different from a kid.

Did Tara ever skate to anything but soundtracks? Hated the way she was packaged. Her skating had it's flaws like everyone...really wish she would have stuck around longer to see how she would have done the next couple of seasons.
Cassandra Howell - all you have to do is look at her pro career - she grew so much and did not skate to soundtracks. Here you go:

What is wrong with skating to soundtracks? Is that something a skater shouldn't do? I don't understand that criticism. If there isn't a rule against it then why is that wrong?
Lots of skaters have consistently skated to soundtracks though. Todd Eldredge did. Why is this a bad thing? You're nitpicking.
At that Nationals, three of the top 4 skated to soundtracks (Tara, Nicole, Tonia K.). Hell, even Michelle skated to a soundtrack in 2000 with "The Red Violin"
@@elizabethhurley1129 Tara Lipinski had a short life on ice, she had bad technique and got hurt by the jumps.....then she retired, she had no chance to be a truly woman style like Michelle Kwan.
Not a single memorable performance.
Her programs never moved me. Her artistry just was not on the level of Michelle Kwan.
Tara was cute, but she should go to the kid's Olympics with her Disney Cartoon program.
She was a jumping bean who willed herself to have passable artistry. It absolutely did not come naturally to her. In that sense she actually deserves a lot of credit for her work ethic. Slutskaya and Bonaly barely made any effort in that area.

Tara is the goat. In her 5 year prime, no one better.

Boring. Tara's performance was never changed , her Disney Cartoon style had no artistry more than Peter Pan in the Neverland. Besides, without a kid's body and weight, Tara had no technique.

Michelle beat Tara at the 98 National championship and the 98 World championship. ❤
I'm glad she redeemed herself at the Olympics by landing the Triple Flip during her short program. That was such a joyous moment when she did it.

I love that she skates for quite some time, and performs several beautiful elements, prior to performing her jump combination. I hate when skaters rush right from their opening pose directly into the combination.
Because we dont use our toestop in roller skating, she didn't use her toepick here.
judges wanted Michelle to be first and Tara gave them their wish with her fall. Tara was world champion but the USFSA wanted Michelle to be positioned as the clear favorite going into the Olympics. Tara would have been 2nd here even if she hadn't fallen.
vistaprime I agree. I laughed when Terry said Nicole Bobek could win if she won the free skate. I said oh please , no way the judges are going to have anyone but Michelle win

@@taraLipinskikfan033 It is not like Nicole would ever be able to have a strong enough technical performance to beat Michelle or Tara regardless. Her 5 triple, loopless, no jump combo, performance was in fact by far her best in years.
Ridiculous. Michelle was the full package. Tara could jump because she never went through puberty and was tiny. Forced artistry, and no longevity. Michelle is a legend, Tara was fly by night. Anyone who knows skating knows that Tara was a flash in the pan and obnoxiously full of herself.
Tara Lipinski honestly told people that : Michelle Kwan is an idol of mine. One of the best skaters was making me work harder and harder. （∩▽∩）
I believe that she did not want to peak too soon. Just like Evan Lysacek in 2010, she did not need to win this. She just needed to make the team and she did. She wanted to peak at the Olympics and she did.

Exactamundo, I adore MK to bits, but Tara timed her peaked beautiful y lol. I just wish she didn't get that horrible hip injury . I was looking forward for more future battles with Michelle, but alas it weren't meant to be. Tara really is the only competitor who pushed MK to the limit. Michelle V Tara was the last golden age of Figure Skating. I miss them so much.
She was not good, she was lucky at the Olympics. Flutzing all over the place, cheating landings. Pains me to watch her flailing her arms all over the place.

good for Tara. Career goal met. True champion skater ? NO WAY. She was nothing but a tiny little flea-like jumpbot in skates.
A bit harsh Mitch, she always came to fight, always ready for a rumble , U gotta respect that. Tara more than once said she knew she was competing against one of the greatest skaters of all time, but still she competed. Tara and Michelle had alotta similarities. Both R competitors, both R champion.

Tara peaked in 1997
No she didn't. She even kicked it up a notch in the 98 Olympics doing two triple triple combinations. Meanwhile Kwan was resting on her laurels and trying to win by favoritism that she was lucky to have at the time. Tara was justly rewarded in the Olympics.
