I'm guessing there are more freight cars in the consist for breaking? To compensate for no diesel locomotive. If you know, let me know in the comments.

Today was the first time for me seeing the UP Heritage Operations running Steam Only!

Basic safety reminders from UP;
Stand back at least 25 feet from all railroad tracks.
Never assume tracks are abandoned or inactive -
ALWAYS expect a train.

If you bring Big Boy east of the Mississippi, you'd have millions of rail fans waiting. C'mon UP, you can do it👍
Do keep in mind that UP doesn't have trackage in the east.
And besides... need I remind ya what 3985 went through back in the fall of 1992 during the Challenger's stint on the CSX? :/

@@jimmyhook4852 UP has track in Memphis, which is technically speaking east of the Mississippi. They brought 844 there at least once. I hope they can bring 4014 there as well. I'm being selfish since Memphis is only 3 hours from home.

I watched the 4014 leave Cheyenne today. It was sounding good and looking good. And moving fast :)

Yes, the fright cards were all repainted. And smooooth, none of the normal squeaks & rattles. 😆
Man I tried so hard to catch it this time and ended up on wrong side of the track it was going on so all I saw was a small silhouette and smoke

Only thing missing is the Big Boy chalk writing on the Smokebox. ^^

They had it pulling a freight train.
Yes the additional cars help reduce brake ch he shoe wear on the locomotive brakes
Federal Railroad Administration: "According to our recommendations, steam locomotives pulling trains should have a diesel helper in the event of stalling."
Big Boy 4014: "Ummmm, appreciated, but not necessary."
I’m thinking there is a diesel running a few miles behind this consist. If anyone knows that for sure please comment.
I thought the story was the Diesel was for power to the cars and to add brake force for Bigboy to pull against
