Thank you a lot! Such curious information in this chapter 😊 I strongly believe, your knowledge and warm attitude to the game is highly appreciated here by users and actual players 😉 My name is Lena, I moved to Oviedo (Asturias) from Odessa (Ukraine). I'm the table tennis player in the past, but I world like to recover my skills. And currently I'm looking for the information on what my positive impact onto Spanish TTF can be, such as organisation of tournaments, translation, more. Would be happy to hear from you : olenamandroviedo@gmail.com
Hi Matilda, firstly I really like your channel. You are putting some good videos and thank you for that. I do use edge tape because of the same reasons like you but also because I want to protect my racket against small accidental hits on the table. By the way, you have an amazing reverse serve. Can you talk about anticipation based on the place where you serve to your opponent? Also what is the importance of side spin in a serve? When to use it and when to avoid it. Thank you Matilda. Keep safe.
I learn more each episode of PingPonged TV I watch! (I beat the racecar to subscribe as I signed-up after the first video! Varoom) I like the practical thinking of Galia Dvorak on why she uses edge tape. I believe some companies offer weighted edge tape for those wanting to change the head weight of their blades. I think that Timo and Matti use to protect the edge (that strikes the table often) is very smart. I look forward to the next exciting pongcast to hear what the ladies are up to and how to improve my game.
Please advise the correct thickness of edge tape. I am using Timo Boll ALC blade 5.8 mm thick, with Rakza Extra Hard Max on one side and Butterfly Tenergy 05 FX 2.1 mm on the other side. Many Thanks and Best Regards.
Some players undercut their rubbers so that the rubber overhangs the blade. I think they do this to protect the blade against impact with the table, but when I tried it, the table contact actually lifted the rubber off the blade, and it had to be re-glued. Using edge tape didn't help, either. Now I trim the rubbers at a slight angle with the edge of the blade, so they are over cut, then add edge tape. You need a very sharp cutting blade for this. This is the opposite to cutting the rubbers so they over hang the blade edge. I use a thick balsa blade, and must use 15mm tape to cover the entire edge and most of the rubber. I rarely make contact with the table anyway.
I tried going without tape for awhile and found that my rubber has more chance of peeling off because of bumping on the table. Now I use it only on the bottom of the forehand side.
I always had the same feeling of Kallberg (wonder if it's only an Anton's feeling xD) that the tape change the propieties and feeling of the racket. Don't know if its real or just a sensation but I justify it as a change in the way the racket vibrates or the way that this vibration was transmited from the hitting point to the edge across the racket. I use to feel my racket more elastic without edge tape, a little bit faster and better feeling on spin. But I will try Matilda's and Timo's sistem cause I also need to protect my rubbers.
I think he means the same as Anton says (and what I feel too) that the bounce off the racket changes. I feel like my racket has less precision and it feels more sluggish. It’s hard to explain and it may just be in the head but I just feel like the racket is different... /Mati
@@pingpongedTV Ah ok.Maybe I've always used side tape personally to protect the rubber & the blade.I dont have 6 different blades like Timo and you guys lol :). Maybe Ill play without just to see if I notice any difference.Curious to see.
@@jstiga7360 that’s why I’m also using that small piece - to protect my racket. The rest of my racket doesn’t really get damaged as long as I don’t have a mental breakdown and throw it 🤦♀️
@@pingpongedTV I had an idea for a video 🤭 Matilda could simulate to have a breakdown and throw two rackets and then we compare the damage of a racket with edge tape and without 🤣🤔
Most of pro players use edge tape in order to prevent any dings or chips on the blade. They actually can't afford another brand new one blade :-P Another method to prevyent your blade from damaging is apply a few thin layers of some nail polish.
To me it was never about affording or not. Even players who gets blades for free or have loads of money usually wants to avoid switching blades since they all have a bit different feel. So I would say most pro players wouldn’t skip the edge tape if they had a problem of chipping the blade. /Mati
@@pingpongedTV I was just Kidding Mati. I guess that your least concern is to keep the blade in mint condition... As you can get another backup for free. Maybe you should be aware about keep your blade surface even, in order to pass racket test, but nothing else. Thanks your sharing your experiences.
I am not using edge tape because my Chinese rubbers are always overlapping a little bit. This gives me a lot more feeling. The rubber that ist overlapping vibrates when hitting the ball👌
I heve never used edge tape in 25 years , because it chnages the feeling of the racket. But I started to use eventually for some reasons - It helps protecting the blade - It makes a the racket 1-2 gr heavier which creates more power and spin - It helps protecting the rubber downside as timo mentioned - It is helps to keep the gas inside the rubber, so the cataplut effect ( and the booster if you use it ) stays longer - I tend to hit somehow my body or the table , so the rubbers, and the glue will not come up. These are my reasons to change my usage in the latest months... I get used to it so it is just as good as before without a tape. Thank you for the video!
The reason a heavier blade generates more power is that the fiber is denser. Using tape to increase the weight of a racket does NOT give you more power. However, it does change the center of gravity of the blade a little, which may or may not be beneficial.
I’m learning a lot from the channel. Thanks for all the awesome insights on ping-pong that you share! Best ping-pong nuggets channel out there. 🙏🏿
Oh! Thanks so much for those words ☺️🙏

Dear Galyna, wish you best at your Tokio 2021 💓
I used a foam edge tape to protect my blade from getting dinged and splintered when I hit the edge of the table or drop the paddle on accident.

Thank you for your constructive feedback! It sounds like a great plan for a video. Stay tuned!
I use thin edge tape that just cover the wood. It looks cool! (the orange tenergy thin tape). Beauty is everything!
I agree, I used to use the thin tape on the blade just for protection and beauty in the past (before I didn't sweat as much as I do now)! /Galia
I use edge tape to protect the rubber and blade, but also because I just think it looks nicer.
SAME
Very helpful! I will reconsider and might start using tape now.
That's awesome Melinda. Glad to help :D

If you want the tape to cover both rubbers, then we would recommend you to get the widest tape, the 12 mm one
Are butterfly blades lacquered when I buy a new one?
I used edge tape for a couple of years but stopped as I didn’t want extra weight, albeit grams, and I don’t really damage my bat.
You and Anton :)
Interesting ... I sweat a lot and I wasn't giving the tape any importance but I think now I will
Let us know if it helped!
I would love to use edge tape but my racket is sooo heavy .. when I put edge tape on I feel like its getting way heavier.. cant do that unfortunately
Which is best? Form, carbon, thin, thick, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm? Currently, im using 12mm thin edge tape. My bat still gets damaged
