Great follow up video, I used Ubiquiti about 6yrs ago for a Point to Point setup. After seeing your video I remember why I did! I setup a Ubiquiti AC for my client and put the controller on azure and using a Ubuntu machine and works magically. Thanks for videos and when I didn't get a notification I kept checking to make sure youtube was working lol.
Great quick guide Tom. Just what I needed to reassure myself of the basic equipment I need. I'll forward this to a couple of friends who were curious about the role of the cloud key, and the fact that you don't necessarily need one. Thanks so much.
You turned me onto the Ubiquiti products and I have been very satisfied with their switches and airCube AC and the centralized management via UNMS is the bees knees, especially because it's free! Another great video showing how easy UniFi software and hardware is easy to set up.
The UAP-AC-LR is a gateway drug. Like you said you are going to want more. They are full featured and priced to sell. I got one for my home after seeing a few of your videos on the Unifi product line and it's a nice piece of equipment.
Nice video, very informational but just a quick correction and so everybody knows, going to min 8:00 - you can have up to a max of 8 SSID per AP (aka Radio) if the monitoring feature is disabled.
Great video- very helpful. I have several access points set up in my house and it was set up by a tech about 8 years ago. I don't have the controller software running on any pc. If I don't have user/password info, any suggestions on how I connect to the access points to get telemetry data and update units? System seems to be running very slow recently...
Thank you for the video and all your other free content. I was hoping that the video would explain what I needed to know to deploy a Ubiquiti system at home. Most home networks like mine have a cable, fiber, or DSL connection and use either the broadband providers router or a BYOD router. I use FIOS with a Netgear Nighthawk 7000 as a router and access point but I’d like to improve the wireless coverage around my property. I know I could turn off the WiFi AP feature on my R7000 and just use it as a router and then connect the a Ubiquiti AP and use that for Wi-Fi. Assuming I want to add a second AP should I add an inexpensive Ubiquiti router and cloud key. My other option would be to update to a consumer WiFi mesh system like eero but that doesn’t look like as much fun or have the possibility of adding an outdoor AP.
Thanks, this was a really clear and helpful video. I'm considering replacing the fairly crappy consumer grade equipment in my mother's house, which suffers poor wifi coverage, with an AC LR for a) better performance/coverage and b) simplicity of use (since I'm the one who had to fix it when it goes wrong!). I do have a question: you mention the Cloud Key - is this what I need to give me remote access to it from my home? Up til now, if her internet or WiFi goes wrong, I have to go over there with my laptop, plug in and sort it out that way. It'd be great if I could just just log in over the net and diagnose/restart/whatever without having to be on site to do it. I'm not a sysadmin, purely domestic.
This would be a great use case for setting up the controller on the cloud - like a amazon or microsoft server and load the ubnt software there. That way you can admin from anywhere. Otherwise set up some sort of remote connection to her pc and just log in that way to make changes.
Your videos are very helpful. I just installed 4 UniFi AP’s with a UniFi switch and EdgeMax ER4 router. My ISP provider is CenturyLink and their Router is setup as IPoE and DHCP. I want to eliminate the CenturyLink Router and connect the ER4 directly to their ONT device. Can you assist me with the ER4 settings
Thanks. Does the Access Point have DHCP? Will it work if The modem is not not from unifi but is your ISP modeum/router? I've been having trouble accessing my work vpn network and connecting smart devices to an old router with DHCP turned off in bridged mode connected to 2 nano beams ptp bridged connected to the isp modem/router. I don't have a work vpn issue if I plug the Ethernet cable from the nano beams access point to my work laptop directly but then I don't have wireless access in the building. I can't unifi the whole network as parents in other building where internet starts. Thank you
Perfect instructions. answered all the questions I had and mine 2 AP system is now up and running. Just need to work out how to pass 3 seperate vpns from my Draytek router to the 2 APs now
Hi do i need to connect the unifi AP to the router or can i connect the AP directly to my motorolla modem? I have a apple airport extreme which I am trying to upgrade. Am not entirely clear do I still be connecting the AP to the airport extreme or I can remove the airport extreme and connect the AP directly to my router?
I have a question for you...I run 3 UniFi® HD In-Wall throughout my home and my 4th AP is in my basement which is unfinished and there I run UniFi® AP AC PRO. My in wall units have no problem switching off from unit to unit depending on where we are in the house. When we go into the basement, we rarely switch off to the basement unless I reconnect what ever device is down there (i.e. smart phone). I even have a ring pro chime that is located in the basement but it typical connects to the AP in my kitchen instead of the basement. My question is, do you think my system is not switching off because the basement AP is a different device than the other AP's in my home? If not, do you have a hunch what the issue might be? If not sure, do you know the best place to find an answer? Apparently there is not much customer support on this system via Unifi. TIA
You might want to mention in a follow up video or something that it's a good practice to back up your Unifi site in case the install gets corrupted or the system it's running on gets damaged. I had this happen to me I had the unifi software installed on a media server and didn't leave it running to save system resources the os drive failed and I didn't have the site backed up and had to recreate my site settings all over again and I had customized mine quite a bit for some special use cases I had. Wasn't the end of the world just some lost time and effort.
So i just buy one connect it and swt up password and done?. So is this better than getting a router. My router is dying and i was going to just get another or wifi mesh. What distance does one cover? Or do i need to buy one for every room :/ then wouldn't a wifi mesh be cheaper at that point. The router i have now can cover my whole house with 400 down all around.
One AP AC LR can cover a 2000 sq ft 2 story house if you install it in a central location; mine's installed in a corner of a similar sized house and and gets good signal pretty much throughout but I'm sure I could get better if I installed it in a proper location. It can help a bit to Google "UniFi - Introduction to Antenna Radiation Patterns", to get an idea of how you should install it (wall, ceiling or floor level mounted) though it's kinda technical. Two warnings: do NOT use the Unifi app as your controller. It's very limited and makes it difficult to re-connect the AP to the Windows controller. Also, don't upgrade to the latest firmware right away. They've had a few bad firmwares that have bricked some, lately. Let others be the guinea pig, wait a month and look on the forums to see if it's stable.
Great video, I needed a simple instruction on how to set up one of these at my small business, I have no networking experience at all , and actually limited computer knowledge your video makes it look simple , do I need to involve my router at all , as I was going to hook up straight from my ubiquiti poe switcher at the back of the store via a long ethernet cable to a wall jack at front of the store where this will be installed ??
I have an AP pro and have it plugged into my router (it is glowing white). my desktop is also connected to the router but the desktop doesn't have wifi or bluetooth. When I load the controller it doesn't show the device. any idea on how to fix this. thanks
Great video Lawrence. Question: How to setup the AP for a restaurant and bar setting where users would need to login using an email address etc. On the sign in page also one could view upcoming events and adds etc??
called a captive portal - set it up on your guest network so any device lands at that page and has to agree to your terms. remember all that traffic is still your responsibility so document well
for some reason i get -80 rssi and instability of wifi on my iphone literally directly above the ap. i saw above because the ap is on the 1st floor faceing up.. and the reported rssi is on the second floor in the room directly above. am iwrong for thinking this is weird? would i be better off trying to mount in attic and facing down? thx
Does the controller software find the APs if they are on a different subnet (VLAN) but with the subnets having access to each other? Lets say I want to install this software on a system in a different subnet then my APs?
Generally that is what one does - it elminates a lot of problems and confusion and that way if your modem gets replaced you don't have to reconfigure wifi.
Do you even need the web based controller in 2022 if you have 1 AP connected to a home wifi router? The iPhone app shows all the the same tools to configure the unit.
I just got one of these APs and I've already had several heart attacks thinking that I might still need to buy more hardware, or that I need to keep my computer running 24/7
I want to install and mamage unifi wireless for my clients. But i don't know where to start... can you do a video on how to start managing unifi for clients? Thanks!
If you look at the some of the videos from Crosstalksolutions (ua-cam.com/channels/VS6ejD9NLZvjsvhcbiDzjw.html) he have done a video on this (if I'm not mistaken).
with the unifi APs I am getting speed drops on Android devices, after some time connected the speed drops to a hard limit of 30mbps from 230mbps, restarting the clients WiFi fixes it for a few minutes to a few hours, been with support for ever running around in circles, its clearly a unifi bug as other APs I test do not produce the same problem, tested some LR AC also with same problem
I know this is simple stuff, but you really answered all my questions and saved me some time.
BIG THANKS.

Todd Howard hi the cloud key lets you access your setup on your iPhone or iPad etc from any where in the world
Great video, just bought my first AP AC LR. Let the addiction begin!!

Thanks for your video. I just purchased a NanoHD on its own and had no idea what I was doing. All set up now.
Thank you for the video and all your other free content.

Excellent summary, Tom. SDN really is a game changer. NFV is the next step.

I got 2 AP AC LR's in my home, 1 on each floor, fantastic equipment. grtz from Belgium
Perfect video for what it is -- I've been aware of UniFi but it seemed overly complex to get started. This cleared up a ton of questions!
Thanks for the video! My first one arrives tomorrow and you've made me feel a lot more comfortable about setting it up without being an IT pro!.
I agree with what you said about the AP”s, but they are also an elegant solution which is why I put them in my home.

Thanks for the info, answered my question straight and to the point.
Do you recommend UDM?
With wireless access point?
Hi Tom - for a simple home network with 2 - 3 APs, would you recommend the desktop or Mobile controller app in 2022?
Desktop
Fantastic explanation. Many, many thanks.

A brilliant video that explained exactly what I needed to know. Thank you very much!
Thanks, great video, really helped me buy the right things and set it up!
What are the best Unifi APs to use to take full advantage of my 1gb fiber and 20+ devices in a 4200+ sqft home?
Thanks Lawrence, the video got me started very well.
I'm new in this I just bought THE HD, could you tell how is good for IPTV boxes...? can I set up in the basement? any answer will appreciate . thanks
I have an AP pro and have it plugged into my router (it is glowing white). my desktop is also connected to the router but the desktop doesn't have wifi or bluetooth. When I load the controller it doesn't show the device. any idea on how to fix this. thanks
Great easy to follow video. Keep it up!
Great video Lawrence. Question: How to setup the AP for a restaurant and bar setting where users would need to login using an email address etc. On the sign in page also one could view upcoming events and adds etc??
called a captive portal - set it up on your guest network so any device lands at that page and has to agree to your terms. remember all that traffic is still your responsibility so document well
FYI the unifi camera single packs no longer come with an injector, they require you to use a poe switch for unifi video now
for some reason i get -80 rssi and instability of wifi on my iphone literally directly above the ap. i saw above because the ap is on the 1st floor faceing up.. and the reported rssi is on the second floor in the room directly above. am iwrong for thinking this is weird? would i be better off trying to mount in attic and facing down? thx
I know I like my unifi setup after watching past videos you did on the gear
Does the controller software find the APs if they are on a different subnet (VLAN) but with the subnets having access to each other? Lets say I want to install this software on a system in a different subnet then my APs?
Once you set up the Unifi, do you turn off the wifi on your modem/router? Or do you leave both on? Thanks in advance.
Generally that is what one does - it elminates a lot of problems and confusion and that way if your modem gets replaced you don't have to reconfigure wifi.
Homeusers only need the APP - super simple!! Scan the code on the back and ready to go!
btw you can create upto 8 access point ssid if you have wireless connectivity off for extending your wifi like a repeater
Do you even need the web based controller in 2022 if you have 1 AP connected to a home wifi router? The iPhone app shows all the the same tools to configure the unit.
Thanks a lot this cleared up a lot of questions I had. Thumbs up
Great video, but I cant help wonder, can I install multiple AP but all of them assign to just ONE SSID?
Yes, you can have the same SSID for multiple access points.
Thank you , its very helpful notes
Thank you so much. You answered everything I wanted to know. Now I can buy without holding back! Gonna grab the NanoHD
I run this from my isp modem, right or can I connect it from my wifi router
Each of the AP has their own SSID right they not work in mesh mode?
Great video, would also suggest making one using UniFi for phone? I hate installing Java on my computer.
How do you set that system up on your smartphone
Very Helpful thank you!
Nice job Dude. Thx
I just got one of these APs and I've already had several heart attacks thinking that I might still need to buy more hardware, or that I need to keep my computer running 24/7
😂😂😂
That statement at the end is so true :D
Hello, I used to configure my unifi but i can't even launch just gets whole day to reload, is any thing u can help me
I want to install and mamage unifi wireless for my clients.
Is it possible to run this software on a pfSense box? That way I won't have to set up a separate Raspberry once my network stuff arrives :)
No
havent tested but should

Hi total how many unifi access point can set up .plz let me knw
Great video! Thank you!
Not sure you noticed that the firmware update just released for the cloud key contain the 5.8 Unifi controller version.
Great vid. Now to just save up for the implementation. Still a bit expensive for everything I need! xD
Nice succinct video, thank you
user profiles like rate limiting don't work when the controller is turned off.
Good teacher
I would like to see you update this to the latest version and cover network controller software on Linux.
That video is here ua-cam.com/video/LP4dIl8Y_Xw/v-deo.html
i cant find the controller software on ubnt website. where i can download from?
with the unifi APs I am getting speed drops on Android devices, after some time connected the speed drops to a hard limit of 30mbps from 230mbps, restarting the clients WiFi fixes it for a few minutes to a few hours, been with support for ever running around in circles, its clearly a unifi bug as other APs I test do not produce the same problem, tested some LR AC also with same problem
Great info!
Shannon Crawford scroll down on the download page, it's towards the bottom. I having a hard time finding it too 😩😩
Just and FYI.. I just bought the 5 Pack from CDW and each one has a power injector.
Can u please make a video about poe on ubis devices. ? Many aps doesnt support regular switch poe..... cuz ubis has its own standard;(
Thank you
Is the linux version x86 or ARM?
can I turn off the DHCP?
Can you do a good review of the UNIFI SECURITY GATEWAY...please :)

Once you get one device, you'll want another. Should be called crack-biquiti. I am in recovery.
Thanks!
thank you
He didn’t describe whether all the UAP’s have to be wired in.
I recommend they are wired in.
Thank you like
Thanks You
Warning: Ubnt becomes adictive! Thanks! :)
PLEASE plesae, edit your end credit so that the banner is at the TOP of the screen, not covering you or your shirt logo
Hi
I hate unifi products such a nightmare to install the controller software my device cannot be found i have java
I find it easy to install their software.
Thanks! Helpful video.
