  • Does Regaine (Rogaine) work against hair loss? I used Regaine twice a day for a year to find out. Here's my Regaine experience and review.
If you're struggling with hair loss, I've been watching a few / baldcafe videos lately, which is helping me feel a bit better about it.

A few months ago I was speaking to a couple of girls at work and opened up about me using rogaine. Interestingly enough they both opened up to me in return and said that they use supplements for hair growth. So you are definately spot on when it comes to people just needing to accept the taboo and not keeping secrets and being more open about the fact that we all have physical flaws at the end of the day.

Great video Rob. I'm alarmed every time I catch a glimpse at the top of my head too. At 35, I've decided to accept the inevitable and see it for what it is, natural. Besides, I'm too tight to pay for a "cure"!!

Man, this video really connected with me. I get exactly what you're saying. I'm 18 and my hair is thinning slightly at the temples. It's not a big deal and I can easily hide it and style my hair, but it still sucks. I feel really shit about myself and I worry by the time I'm around 25, the time where I should be in my prime, I'm gonna have really shit thin hair. There seems to be no positive outcome for me. I could either deal with the hair loss and feel really insecure about myself, I could spend a fortune getting a hair transplant that could backfire and feel even more shit about myself, I could spend a fortune on rogaine only to realise it doesn't work, or I could use something like finasterside and then have to worry about erectile dysfunction. Seriously, thinking about erectile dysfunction at 18 years old is not great. It's very depressing.

I love your golf videos and surprised to see this video on my feed. here are my thoughts!
    1) You are a good looking guy with a lot of insight on golf and someone who has a good amount of audience, so I was surprised, you had this insecurity.
    2) I play basketball along with golf and I started thinning my hair at 27. Wore a lot of hats for a while but never tried any products other than oils and changing my diet. can't play ball with a hat on. In the end, I shave my head on a regular basis now and I love the smooth feeling.
    3) I don't have a perfectly shaped head for a bald look but if women don't like it, well I just saved myself some time from pursuing the wrong girl. There are a lot of women, that don't give a crap about hair: its all in our heads, (no Pun Intended)
    4) I look forward to your golf videos and wish you the confidence of tiger woods when it comes to your struggle with hair loss.
    5) keep up the good work and cheers.

Hi Rob, just read this. I'm a sixty year old man who has been slowly losing his hair over the last 35 years. I totally agree with your comments about how it affects people differently i am very much in your camp here. It's always bothered me, hair is so important to some people's appearance, including mine but its been so slow I've learnt to look at the hair between the spaces and not the spaces between the hair all these years. Well, that was until almost three years ago when I felt it had got bad enough to do something about it, so I had an fue treatment at HSBC in London to restore my receding hairline and I've never looked back. Had another one just over a year ago to help restore balding in the crown and middle part, just over 4000 hair follicles in total. Even at this lateish age and being happily married for 30 years, it has changed my life. I am so much more confident in general and it's great to have a good hairline again. The takeaway message here is if you have aggressive hair loss it is very difficult to do much about it but if your hair loss is reasonably slow, a hair transplant from a reputable clinic is definitely the way forward. Oh and you'll need around 15k but god, was it worth it. If your hair loss is reasonably slow, if I was you, I'd go for it.

    • @RobMcGarr
      @RobMcGarr  2 роки тому +2

You should be stacking as many treatments as you can tolerate. Minoxidil(rogaine) finasteride and microneedling are the biggest three things you can do for your hair. Microneedling can even turn a rogaine non responder into a responder. There is a lot of snake oil being pushed but there are real treatments and more are coming down the pipeline. How's your hairline now?

I'm in the same boat.. I'm 6ft4 and, according to a lot of women, "handsome." I actually disliked the way I looked for most of my life but I started to get more confident and started to like the way I look. THEN I noticed my hair was thinning on my crown and it was just so heart breaking for me.. Just when I started to accept and love myself THAT crap happens! I have thick hair but my crown is thinning... Most of my friends say that I'd not suit being balled or having my hair shaved off so I can''t do that because, like you, I feel it will make me ugly. The other day I was at this small concert thing, about 120 people... Then I saw myself from behind on the camera, on the big screen for 5 minutes straight! I could SEE my hair loss and I felt SO bloody embarrassed and just HATED IT!

Have you considered using finasteride to stop the balding? You can use finasteride to stop the balding and use minoxidil to to make the follicles stronger and with time some of it will grow back but it will take a long time. Definitely suggest seeing a doctor first before using finasteride because it affects your hormone levels.

Were you rubbing it into your scalp or using it like a mousse on your hair? Minoxodil usually works pretty well for your type or hairloss though it doesn't attack the root cause of baldness which medications like finasteride do and are very effective. Minoxidil is usually used as an adjunct treatment because if you don't stop your body creating dht your hairloss will continue to progress.

Great video mate. I relate. However, I started losing my hair (it started becoming very thin) at the age of 17-18! Yes. 17-18. I went to many doctors at the time, and they said that this is not hereditary hair loss because i was too young to experience that at such a young age. They said hereditary hair loss starts striking while you are well at your late twenties or even thirties. Anyways, they asked me if I smoke and I said yes I do. They said well the treatment for your hair loss wont work if you continue to smoke so dont bother to come back here if you continue smoking. Other doctors attributed my early on hair loss to other reasons, such as increase in testosterone , or even psychological reasons! Anyways, I decided to forget about it and I got over it and i started shaving my head since. Luckily, my head does not look funny shaved i had a few compliments on my head shave so i am blessed to not suffer from my appearance when shaved. Sometimes I wish I could have hair, and go to the barber and get some cool hair styles going on, but then I just say oh well, this is life ? Anyways, I decided to look into Regaine, as I heard good things about it from an ex gf of mine. She said it didnt work well on her but it did work well on her friends. But i was kinda skeptical. So i decided to use UA-cam to get some feedback, and now, after seeing your video, I think ill just continue my life with a shaved head haha! :) BTW, i am now 36 years old.

I had cranial surgery that left me with scars and "hair shock" where my hair totally fell out to a couple of cm's either side of the scars. My surgeon recommended Regaine to speed the process of regrowth. I used an entire bottle (in liquid form) and noticed that my hair started falling out at an alarming rate every time I washed it and I started growing facial hair in fine white hairs about 1.5 cm long (I'm a natural blond - and female!) I looked on line and belatedly read that the product could cause the loss of "old" hairs that were ready to drop anyway in the natural process of hair-fall and regrowth. It also mentioned as an aside that it could cause temporary overgrowth of facial hair during the time of use. Well, it's been 6 months since I stopped using it, my hairdresser says I have lost a third of my hair, and I still have to shave once a week. I still hold out the hope I will one day go back to normal. I don't know if everyone has this reaction to the product, but I definitely would NOT recommend the risk!

Great video Rob. Thanks for that. I used to have an amazing head of hair when I was 20 and it's now very receding with a bald spot at 35. Pretty devastating as I loved having hair. Anyway, I took the plunge and shaved it off beginning of covid - whilst I wish I had hair it's not too bad and I've had a lot of really supportive friends. I still wonder about these products - so thanks for confirming my snake-oil suspicions! Just to say if you take the plunge and shave it off - don't worry about it - the fear of it is much worse than the reality. You can always grow it back if you don't like it!

I had your issues but never believed the miracle cures. So one day I just shaved it. And I gotta say I really liked it afterwards. I was a tad self-conscious at first BUT I was going grey as well as thin. Once shave I looked ten years younger. And, being quite broad-shouldered, I imported some of that Michael Chiklis vibe.
My luck with women cranked up a notch - maybe not because of the polished dome but because I didn't have that vandalized bird's next think going on. Shave it off sir. It will always grow back to what it was.

Also following from my previous comment around 4 years ago when i got comfortable living with my ex i decided to shave my head, I don't think she was too impressed but didn't say anything bad at all. other family members actually said i looked stupid (sister said it scared my nephew) and mum said i looked ill. Very nice comments from family when you've told them that you're thinking of doing it because you're feeling self conscious.

Mate I had hair past my shoulders back in the day. Then at 34 it started to thin, I managed it for a few years with short hair cuts until, shaving it off aged 45. Receding is just one of the pleasures we endure with age, long life allows us to enjoy it. When I was young Sean Connery was named the most handsome man on the planet and of course he was bald.

I have used minoxidil on and off throughout the years, and whenever i have used it for 3-4 months, i start regrowing more hair then when im not using it (but still not an optimal amount).. Anyways, I ran out of minoxidil, and because of covid19, the package took 3 months to arrive.. by the time i started using it again, my hairloss had progressed quite a bit.. and then for the first couple of months using it again, my hairloss got even worse (due to the shredding phaze).. Anyways, i began throwing ketoconazole and foligains trioxidil stuff into the mix.. i switch between washing my hair with ketoconazole shampoo one day, and trioxidil shampoo/balsam the other day.. At this point in time, 5-6 months after starting the treatment again, i have regrown quite a bit of hair.. I would say i have atleast doubled the hairs, so this combination really seems to work for me.. when i use the ketoconazole shampoo (nizoral) - I leave it on my head for 15 minutes, before washing it off.. I learned that trick from the youtube channel "more plates more dates".. So yeah, it works for me, but dont expect it to give you a full head of hair.. that is extremely unlikely.. but for many people it stops their hairloss, and for some, it regrows some.

Many people lack the enzyme that converts minoxidil into minoxidil sulfate and so the product is not effective for them as it is for others. Only 40-50% of people will have hair growth from minoxidil. You can increase the effectiveness of minoxidil by microneedling or using tretinoin.
It's also important to understand that minoxidil does not stop hairloss, it only improves the thickness and lengthens the life cycle of your remaining hairs. You need to take finasteride or dutasteride to block the DHT hormone that causes the miniaturization of your hair follicles.

Started losing mine in my early 20's. Shaved it off at 23. Got ribbed for a week or 2, then me and everyone around me just accepted it. I found that I had more success with women, as my vanity level was knocked down a few notches, and I was forced to approach girls more aggressively. I am 47 now, and to be honest, even if it miraculously did grow back, I'd still shave it. For me, it wouldn't be worth the hassle. Note: I use a cordless beard trimmer - my experiments with wet-razor shaving have not been good, as the skin on my head and back of the neck suffer razor burns easily.

One of my friends used this also with another drug and the change was drastic, all of his small hairs and thinning got thick again but after a couple of years it peaked and went back to normal. Apparently the drug can have pretty serious side effects too as it's for cancer treatment. I started thinning a bit at 30 and by a bit i mean where you could see and by that time youve lot quite a bit. got into a relationship and wasn't too bothered for a few years until it got worse. Now after that relationship recently ended after 7.5 years im worried about it again. She said she had wasted the best of her 20s on me and i said i'd wasted the last few years of good hair haha. It really isn't a nice thing to go through for men, especially as i'd always been known for my longish hair since a teen and was one of the things women seemed to like about me. I should bite the bullet and shave it now but i feel i don't have many hair cuts left and im holding on for dear life.

Hello rob the thing is rogain does not treat the underlying issue of male pattern baldness which is DHT. There are many types of hair loss, from what I can see , you seem to have the hairline receding and the crown thinning. This is clearly male pattern baldness.
Rogain stimulates hair growth but do not prevent your hair follicles from getting miniaturized by the DHT produced by your body. If you want an effective solution you have to deal with the DHT first. For the case of finesteride you can try a lower dosage 3mg or 4 mg a week which is just as effective than 7mg a week.
In all cases know that male pattern baldness cannot be treated with rogain alone since this product does not tackle DHT.
In order to enhance the results of rogain you can also add a microneedling session of 1 to 1.5mm depth once a week and apply the rogain 24h after. If you feel that your hair is worth holding to than don't give up the fight that easily mate you haven't even deployed all your tools yet. Whatever the case may be good luck buddy, I know that hair loss is not an easy phase to go through.

    Hi mate,
If you haven't seen results with minoxidil, it could be because you have low levels of sulfotransferase enzymes on your scalp. These enzymes are responsible for converting minoxidil into its active form, minoxidil sulfate, which promotes hair growth.
To improve the effectiveness of minoxidil, you can try using tretinoin and microneedling. Tretinoin increases the activity of sulfotransferase enzymes, aiding in the conversion process. Microneedling helps enhance minoxidil absorption by creating small punctures in the scalp.
It's common for individuals to have low sulfotransferase enzyme levels on their scalp, which can impact the response to minoxidil.
