My thoughts on why The Color Purple didn't do well OVER TIME at the box office

  • The end of the year brought a lackluster performance for the latest adaptation of “The Color Purple,” a musical that blew audiences away when it opened on Christmas Day but then saw numbers dramatically fall as its theater run continues.

    FAQ:
Who are you and what is your name?
My name is My View My Opinion (MVMO) & I am a Podcaster, on UA-cam. Due to safety concerns on the internet, I do not share my personal information anymore and I ask that others respect this. Also, I'm against the cult of personality & the promotion of self. I have no desire to "make a name" for myself. That's odd in this day & time I know, because most strive for this. Too many folks make themselves the center of attention instead of helping others first & allowing the information they share to be the focus of folks attention. Many crave applause, acceptance, & "fans & followers". I believe in letting the information take center stage.
Why don't you show your face?
My UA-cam channel is host to my podcast. However, I do make on camera appearances from time to time & have many times in the past- as this is how my channel started, with me on camera talking about whatever. And for those who always ask, yes, I am a black woman, LOL

For me, I don’t think folk wanted to see the abusive theme. It also seemed more musical based on previews than it was which may have lessened interest. The Spielberg movie was perfection. I saw Fantasia in the Broadway musical which I enjoyed. This movie musical version was unnecessary. This was Oprah’s need.

Honestly, I had not made any plans to see it...I honestly am over the Color Purple. Read the book, saw the movie, and the play. I don't have an ounce of longing to keep reliving the second hand trauma experienced from this book/movie. Oprah, needs to find another project to support. Put the Color Purple rest.

Saw all 3 iterations of the Color Purple: the original film, the Broadway show (Fantasia was sick & didn't show up) and the recent film. Loved all 3 adaptations. Entertainment Tonight & Access Hollywood covered Taraji's pay concerns. She got a standing ovation on The Talk a week ago. These entertainment shows are mainstream. Folks know Taraji she's a good actress but I do think her remarks overshadowed the movie & folks wanted to "hate on" Oprah too for various reasons. They may get more support for the film on streaming platforms.

I totally agree with you 100% for all of those reasons you addressed why I we didn’t go and see the movie and the other comments. Specifically the film was attractive for a very small group, not even all African Americans and lacks real cross over appeal. I for one am not interested and would not go to see anything with lgbtq theme; it has been overkilled and life is more to think about that who someone is in love,’ attracted to, etc. in addition I don’t care for musicals at all. The film has also been overdone; the original wasn’t broken so why fix it. Excellent commentary! Side bar, I felt the same thing about the steel magnolia remake.

I was invited to the musical with friends and if I’m being honest I did not want to sit and hear singing and dancing for a movie I had already seen. Secondly I just did not want to see abuse. The original movie was painful enough. I couldn’t stand Danny Glover after seeing that movie but I guess that means he was a great actor. Oprah and Whoopi also were unforgettable. I don’t need a reminder of all the pain that was endured.

I totally agree with you! The reasons why that movie flopped is because some people hate gays, musicals, Oprah and remakes. And as far as Taraji is concerned you're right, her skill set is limited. Also Taraji is 53 years old. As far as Hollywood is concerned she's "old". The whole "Vivica and Taraji" thing was silly to me. Vivica is doing what Taraji should be doing, directing and writing, expanding her skill set. And the industry is paying Vivica what a 59 year old is deemed worthy of getting paid, sorry just the facts.

TCP did not need to be remade. There are plenty of great writers out there, why do they keep flushing millions into remakes🤷🏿‍♀️. I think after success w/ Benjamin Button, Taraji should have started taking more crossover roles to show her range as an actress. The roles would have been smaller, but I think had she started doing those roles back then, she’d be more marketable to other genres today. I do support her fight, but I believe her agent, manager, and PR rep play a huge part in that. Black entertainers have a very small window to crossover and if their team don’t jump when the opportunity presents itself, that window closes fast. I think she should explore getting behind the camera, I have a feeling she’d do well.

I was so shocked when it was revealed that the 'Color Purple' was going to be recycled into another movie. My first thought was 'leave it alone'; it was during the original time the movie was released was very successful! How much are you going to change it? The perfection was signed, sealed, and delivered. And now, its seeming status is that it was a FLOP! How sad. Just think about all the production, time, and expenses that were allocated to re-do this once very successful movie production. Then when Ms. Henson started complaining and letting the public know that she had not received what was due her; it brought a NEGATIVE light and taste to this film and its creators and financial supporters. It was a done deal once people were able to hear and watch Ms. Henson cry and complain (for what...you are working and getting paid) These differences in acknowledging your skill set and what you have to offer. Double disaster outcome for all involved; which caused this production to fail.

I like many that grew up on the original can recite lines and sing every song. Thank God my senior church friend and me popped our own popcorn and got the senior priced tickets bc we both fell asleep. I wanted the lil money that I spent coming out of there and couldn’t remember one lyric in any of the 50 plus songs they sung.
