Some extra information for those interested: the Khanzad Castle, also known as Banaman Castle, was constructed in the 16th century (and not in the 1800s) by the Kurdish Princess Khanzad. Khanzad Region is named after her. During her rule, neighboring empires were waging wars against each other and the Kurds were caught right in the middle. Princess Khanzad built four castles in the region; Khanzad Castle is, as far as I know, the only surviving one. The interior is not very lavish because this was a defensive castle and not the Princess' actual residence. Kurds have, with their equality between genders, always set themselves apart from neighboring nations; Khanzad's story is just one of many that is testimony of this fact. There are remains of over 1,000 'real' castles in the four parts of Kurdistan, but the most impressive Kurdish castles are actually located outside of the Kurdish homeland. Those castles were built during the Kurdish Ayyubid Dynasty, most famous for its founder Saladin ("Salahuddin"), the Kurdish Sultan who defeated the Crusader States in the 12th century. At some point in this video, they speak of a region called "Salahuddin", which is named after him. Some famous Middle-Eastern castles that were either completely built by Kurds or that got their current shape after Kurdish reconstruction are: the Citadel of Cairo in Egypt and the Citadel of Aleppo, the Citadel of Damascus, and the Castle of the Kurds aka Krak des Chaveliers in Syria. All of those castles are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

I am Kurdish American, and my grandpa (now deceased) was a peshmerga who was a part of a group of peshmergas who defeated those tanks in order to stop the invasion of Kurdistan from Saddam's regime in the 90s. Unfortunately my grandpa got diagnosed with a heath condition and sadly passed away in 2004, his wish before his death was to bury him right at that place. So you might have noticed a white wall surrounding a grave behind those tanks, that was my grandpa's grave. I am proud to be his grandson. My grandfather was truly a man of honor.

The KDP Kurds were allied with Saddam and he helped them recapture Erbil from PUK Kurds? Is this right? Another person on here said the same thing. I do wonder, how could KDP Kurds join Saddam in battle when he murdered thousands of Kurds during the Anfal Campaign in 1986? And why did PUK and KDP fight each other?
@@Marmer Untrue what that guy said. Let me explain. KDP was the first Kurdish party in Iraq led by the Barzanis. They were first to fight the Iraqi government + Saddam. In 1966, during the Aylul September Kurdish revolution which was led by Mullah Mustafa Barzani; A leftist wing faction of the KDP split which ended up becoming the PUK led by the Talabanis and they sided with Saddam Hussein who at the time was intelligence minister to attack KDP Peshmergas who were fighting the Kurdish revolution. Thus, started the history of betrayal and treason by PUK. In 1996, there was a Kurdish civil war started by PUK as PUK were unhappy that KDP were making $$$ from the customs border and wanted to wipe out the KDP for good so they could take full power so they brought Iranian soldiers into Erbil and Kurdistan in an attempt to wipe out the KDP Barzanis. When they captured Erbil from the KDP, they executed thousands of KDP Peshmerga and looted civilan homes. Barzani was forced to struck a temporary deal with Saddam to push back the PUK out of Erbil or the Barzanis would of been wiped out forever. The plague of the Kurdish cause is the treasonous PUK. All problems lie with their treason.

@@Marmer basically it was PUK that began the revolution to kick out Iraqi regime forces from Kurdish cities in Iraq. KDP was still in Iran and didn't have plans on returning to Iraqi Kurdistan. PUK captured kirkuo slemani and Erbil, and called on KDP to leave Iran and come back to Iraqi Kurdistan to capture Dokuk and the other Kurmanji regions. PUK is Sorani and KDP is kurmanji. Kdp came and took Dohuk after Iraqi regime was exhausted fighting PUK and Shia militias in South. They had a vote. KDP cheated in the votes.
