    If there's a way to pin this to the top, I will.
    There are no "effects" or "filters" on this video. I've edited the footage to reduce shake and stuttering from the original 16mm film provided by NHTSA.
    Certain testing facilities used 16mm film up into the mid-2000's and I have no control over this.

    • @jonathankleinow2073
      @jonathankleinow2073 5 років тому +11

      Definitely understand you're not in control over the film stock they used, and I appreciate you taking the time to comb through their archives and upload footage. I would like to know from someone at NHTSA why they used 16mm film for so long, though.

      They used 16mm film into the mid 2000’s? Why? And why the matchup of a 2002 dodge and 2004 Honda?

    • @joeMW284
      @joeMW284 5 років тому +16

      Keep in mind that they're filming this at 1000 FPS. The amount of data generated by a high resolution, uncompressed video feed at 1000 fps is absolutely massive. Back then we had spinning hard drives. Even an array of 10,000 rpm drives in RAID could likely not keep up with that. They'd need a machine specially designed for this application and I guarantee it wouldn't be cheap. Film is a simple, effective solution. It probably didn't make much sense to switch to digital when this was filmed.

    • @michaeljull1175

      I definitely understand why digital video wasn't an option. I've just noticed that tests filmed by IIHS in the same time period are much higher quality. My question isn't so much film vs. DV but 16 mm film vs a higher quality film.

    Damn, the Honda did extremely well for having a full sized pick up truck rammed into it at 100km/h. The A pillar held up surprisingly well. Passenger intrusion isn’t that bad either. Also note the Ram’s airbags failed to deploy, they were not disabled.

Meanwhile in the Honda, they most likely survived, driver with a broken leg. I'm an EMT and I've seen way too many crashes with older trucks especially where the occupants were dead or seriously hurt, but the people in the car walked away.

Limits for serious injury are 1,000 HIC and 60 G's on the chest. The HICs were all below 400 and chest G's below 40, forces on the legs of all occupants were low as well.

    Notice how the ram is tipping over a bit, but the honda accord isn't. This is because suvs and trucks, Have a high center of gravity, meanwhile sedans don't. So I recommend you buy a sedan and not a suv or a truck. High center of gravity applies with minivans too because they are like suvs but with sliding doors. Crossovers, Station wagons are included with a high center of gravity also.
